Locke, who was now known as "The Man in Black" on the island, was seen early on walking through the jungle when he picked up a knife and used it to cut a piece of rope. The rope was used to hang a sack in the air which contained a person. Inside the sack was Richard Alpert and Locke was heard telling Richard that it was time to talk.

There were flash sideways scenes in this episode which revolved around John Locke. Locke was seen going to work and interacting with a co worker there named Randy. Randy asked John how a conference went so John responded it was okay but he learned nothing from it. Locke did comment on how he came into contact with some good people at the conference.

As Locke continued to talk to Randy, Randy informed him that Locke was gone all week when he was supposed to have been at work. Locke stated that perhaps that week could be considered his vacation week but Randy reminded him he scheduled his vacation in October as that was when he would have his wedding. Randy told John Locke that he was fired.

In Ben's first scene, he spoke to Ilana and informed her he was about to tell her something which she likely would not believe. This was when he said to her that John Locke had killed a bunch of their people so Ilana asked him if he did it all by himself. Ben replied he did since he turned into a black wall of smoke which he saw right before his very eyes.

Midway through the episode, Locke (as "The Man in Black") went to the Dharma Initiative's barracks to talk to Sawyer and Sawyer told him he thought he was dead. Locke responded he was indeed dead so Sawyer jokingly poured both of them a drink to toast to being dead. Locke remarked that Sawyer was handling his being back alive (as in the form of "The Man in Black") very well.

When Locke continued to talk to Sawyer, Sawyer stated he knew he was not John Locke since the real John Locke was always scared whereas the man in front of him was not scared.

When Locke asked him to help him to come with him to get off the island, Sawyer decided to go with him.

After Locke had been fired, he was seen going to his car to get in and drive home so he opened up the side door and used a button to bring down a lift to carry him inside his van since he was wheelchair bound. The lift hit the car next to him and this was when Hurley came out to ask Locke what was up. Locke angrily told him his car was nearly in his parking spot so Hurley apologized to him.

Midway through the episode, Sun was down by the beach and Ilana asked her where everybody else was. Sun stated they left for the temple to which Ilana commented to Sun that the temple was the safest place on the island. Sun then asked Ilana if she was alright to which Ilana said she was fine.

Sawyer was going through the jungle since Locke encouraged him to help him locate a way off the island. At one point, he was by himself and Richard saw him. Richard asked him to come with him to the temple so Sawyer said he already had been there and wanted to stick with Locke. Richard informed Sawyer that the man he was with was not John Locke and Sawyer replied that he knew he was not but the man promised him answers.
