Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first historic figure the Doctor met, as determined by when the episode aired?

Answer: Marco Polo

"Marco Polo" was the fourth serial of "Doctor Who", and aired in the spring of 1964. Sadly, it is missing from the archives of the BBC. The First Doctor (William Hartnell) met Robespierre in "Reign of Terror" (1964), Nero in "The Romans" (1965) and Charles IX of France in "The Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Eve" (1966). Marco Polo was a 13th century Italian who traveled across Asia, eventually reaching China. The story was set in China, in the court of Kublai Khan.
2. What actress played Polly, a companion of both the First and Second Doctors?

Answer: Anneke Wills

Polly, played by Anneke Wills, was first seen in "The War Machines" (1966) and last seen in "The Faceless Ones" (1967). Polly was a 1960s hip London girl.
Willis started acting at age 11, but gave it up in 1970. She has lived in many places over the last few decades, including India, Canada and the United States. Deborah Watling played Victoria Waterfield and Wendy Padbury played Zoe Herriott, both companions of the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton). Carol Ann Ford played Susan Foreman, the First Doctor's granddaughter.
3. Who edited almost every "Doctor Who" script during the Third Doctor's tenure?

Answer: Terrance Dicks

Terrance Dicks served as script editor from 1969 to 1974. He worked closely with Barry Letts, who was the producer of "Doctor Who" during the same era. Jon Pertwee was the Third Doctor. Robert Holmes took over Dick's position as script editor from 1974 to 1977, and was responsible for the "Key to Time" season. Along with his "Doctor Who" work, Dicks is an incredibly prolific children's author, with dozens of books and many novelizations of "Dr Who" episodes.
4. Who played the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1981?

Answer: Tom Baker

Tom Baker, with his bushy hair, toothy grin, enormous scarf and bag of jelly babies, was the first Doctor to gain wide appeal in the United States. He actually trained with Sir Laurence Olivier's National Theater before being cast as the Doctor. Colin Baker was the sixth incarnation of the Doctor. Ian Martin was Doctor Harry Sullivan, a companion of the Fourth Doctor. John Leeson provided the voice for K-9, the Doctor's mechanic dog companion.
5. What actress played Nyssa, one of the Fifth Doctor's companions?

Answer: Sarah Sutton

Nyssa was an aristocrat from Traken, who met the Fourth Doctor in "The Keepers of Traken" and continued with the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison). Her last episode was "Terminus" (1983). Sutton has done very little acting since leaving "Doctor Who".
Janet Fielding played Tegan, an Australian flight attendant. Nicola Bryant played Perpugillium Brown. Louise Jameson played Leela, a savage woman who was a companion of the Fourth Doctor.
6. Who was the only companion during the 1963-1989 run that did not have an episode showing how they met the Doctor?

Answer: Melanie Bush

Melanie first showed up in "The Terror of The Vervoids" during the "Trial of a Time Lord" season (1986). By that point, she had been traveling with the Doctor for some time. Producers did plan to have an episode where Mel met the Doctor, but Sixth Doctor Colin Baker was fired before they could film it. Mel was played by Bonnie Langford.
The Fifth Doctor met Peri at an archaeological dig in "Planet of Fire". Ace met the Seventh Doctor as a waitress on an ice planet in "Dragonfire". And the Third Doctor met Sarah Jane while battling Sontarans in "The Time Warrior".
7. Who wrote the Seventh Doctor serials "Dragonfire" and "The Curse of Fenric"?

Answer: Ian Briggs

It was Ian Briggs. He also novelized the episodes for Target Books. Wyatt wrote "Paradise Towers" and "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy". Kohll wrote "Delta and the Bannerman". Monro had the distinction of writing "Survival", the last regular serial during the original run. All of these episodes featured the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy).
8. What was the last name of the Ninth Doctor's companion Rose?

Answer: Tyler

It was Rose Tyler, with her mom Jackie and dad Pete. Rose was a shop clerk when she met the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston), who saved her from autons, plastic killer robots. Rose was played by Billie Piper, who was a huge singing star before she got into acting. Billie achieved the distinction of being the youngest person to debut with a number one hit in England.

Her first album went platinum. She earned multiple awards for playing Rose Tyler. After "Doctor Who", Piper played a call girl in "Secret Diary of a Call Girl". Harkess refers to Captain Jack, inter-galatic rogue. Smith is Mickey Smith, Rose's one-time boyfriend.
9. In what episode did the Tenth Doctor become a school master in 1913 England?

Answer: Human Nature

"Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood" featured the Doctor as a transformed human. David Tennant did a brilliant job. "Blink" introduced the Weeping Angels, one of the Doctor's deadliest enemies. "School Reunion" had the Doctor fighting giant bat creatures. Both "Blink" and "School Reunion" were set in the 21st century. "Time Crash" was a mini-episode shot for Children in Need.

The Fifth Doctor met with the Tenth Doctor in a very amusing contrast of styles. Ironically, Peter Davison became Tennant's father-in-law a few years later.
10. The first letter of the first 9 answers spell out the answer. What actor played the Eleventh Doctor?

Answer: Matt Smith

Matt Smith began his run as the Eleventh Doctor in "The Eleventh Hour" in which he saved the Earth from being incinerated -- in 20 minutes, with no TARDIS and no sonic screwdriver. At 26, Smith was the youngest person so far to play the Doctor. His companions for most of this tenure were Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). During the second half of season seven, the Doctor was accompanied by Clara Oswald (Jenna Louise Coleman).

The Eleventh Doctor was married to River Song (Alexis Kingston).
