Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What food played a supporting role in "The Aztecs" (1964)?

Answer: Chocolate

Chocolate has been used in Central America for over 3000 years. In "The Aztecs" the First Doctor (William Hartnell) becomes unwittingly engaged to a native woman named Cameca (Margot Van der Burgh) when they share a cup of cocoa. The Doctor was amused by the fact that the Aztecs used cocoa beans as currency (a historical fact). Other food eaten during the First Doctor's years include grapes, pomegranates and salt.
2. In "The Invasion" (1968), the Second Doctor asks for patty cake and tea from the staff at UNIT. Who was invading Earth in this episode?

Answer: The Cybermen

"The Invasion" marks the first real appearance of UNIT, including Sergeant Benton. It is the first of the lost episodes from the 1960s to be recreated as an animated feature. The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) is the first doctor to eat jelly babies, in "The Dominators" (1968). The patty cake and tea line is very much in keeping with the "Cosmic Hobo" persona that Troughton developed for the Doctor.
3. What type of cheese does the Third Doctor enjoy in "Day of the Daleks" (1972)?

Answer: Gorgonzola

The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) enjoyed Gorgonzola, as did Jo Grant (Katy Manning). They ate it at Auderly House, the site of a peace conference which was being interfered with by the Daleks. Gorgonzola is an Italian blue cheese. Stilton is British and Roquefort is French; both are also blue cheeses.
The Third Doctor also enjoyed cheese sandwiches ("The Sea Devils"). During season eight, Nestle released a set of "Doctor Who" themed chocolates.
4. What candy is almost as iconic a symbol of the Fourth Doctor as his giant scarf?

Answer: Jelly Babies

Jelly Babies are a type of gummy candy in the shape of babies. Bassett's Candy launched them as peace babies in 1918, and renamed them jelly babies in 1953. Their flavors include lemon, raspberry, lime, blackcurrant and orange. While the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) was the Doctor who used them most frequently, they were also offered by the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and eleventh doctors. Jelly Babies appear in at least 15 episodes during the Tom Baker era.

He frequently offered them to defuse tense situations.

Some people accepted (Sara Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan), while others (Davros) did not.
5. What vegetable became a symbol of the Fifth Doctor?

Answer: Celery

The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) wore a stalk of celery on his coat. It marked the first time the Doctor wore something on his lapel. The Doctor first wore the celery in "Castrovalva" and replaced it in "Enlightenment".
The celery was both decorative and practical. It warned the Doctor of the presence of certain gases which he was allergic to, should the celery turn purple. At that point, he would eat the celery.
Ironically, Davison hates celery. The celery was actually artificial, made of cloth. When Tenth Doctor David Tennant found out about this, he claimed to be "devastated."
6. What drink did Melanie Bush enjoy, but the Sixth Doctor rejected?

Answer: Carrot juice

In both "Terror of the Vervoids" (1986) and "The Ultimate Foe" (1986), Melanie (Bonnie Langford) tries to get the Doctor to drink carrot juice. She praises it for containing Vitamin A and for improving vision. The Doctor doesn't buy it.
7. What is the name of the planet that the Seventh Doctor and Ace visit where people are executed by being covered in chocolate in the episode "The Happiness Patrol" (1988)?

Answer: Terra Alpha

Terra Alpha is a totalitarian state where people are executed for being unhappy. The executioner is a candy-covered robot who drowns people in fondant. The Doctor (Colin Baker) defeats him by making him stick to the floor with lemonade. Writer Graeme Curry and Director Chris Clough meant the episode to be a commentary on Margaret Thatcher.

The villain is a stern woman named Helen A. Svartos was in "Dragonfire" (1987). Segonax is a planet run by clowns in "the Greatest Show in the Galaxy" (1988).

The Seventh Doctor shows up at the start of the 1996 television movie, and still has Jelly Babies. The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) also uses Jelly Babies to distract people.
8. What did both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors suggest Rose should eat?

Answer: Beans on toast

In "Rose" the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) suggested that Rose eat beans on toast. While he was regenerating, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) also suggested Rose eat beans ("The Christmas Invasion"). Heinz Baked Beans are one of the most popular foods in England, and millions of people eat canned beans on a daily basis. Bangers and mash are simply sausages and mashed potatoes. Bubble and Squeak is leftover vegetables fried with mashed potatoes. Just had to throw in lemon curry for "Monty Python" fans.
9. The Ninth Doctor discovered that what common food additive was deadly to the Slitheen?

Answer: Vinegar

Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler managed to kill a Slitheen using a jar of pickles in "World War III". Raxacoricofallapatorians are made largely of calcium, which reacts very badly with acetic acid. Therefore, vinegar, ketchup and Coca Cola would not be on their shopping lists.
10. What fruit did both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors express a fondness for?

Answer: Bananas

The Ninth Doctor mentioned his fondness for bananas in "The Doctor Dances." In "The Girl in the Fireplace," the Doctor tells Rose "Always bring a banana to a party." In "Smith and Jones," the Tenth Doctor says he likes banana milkshakes.
The satsuma, a small orange which is popular as a stocking stuffer, came in handy for the Tenth Doctor. He used it to send the Sycorax leader plummeting to Earth. ("The Christmas Invasion")
The Tenth Doctor ate both walnuts and sardines as an antidote for cyanide poisoning in "The Unicorn and the Wasp."
