Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sadly died on Christmas Day after being knocked over by another EastEnder?

Answer: Jamie

Tiffany met her demise on New Year's Eve 1998 after being run over by Frank - while chasing after her husband Grant who was taking her daughter away from her. Jamie was to die on Christmas Day 2002 after Martin knocked him over; he was texting a message to his girlfriend at the time.
2. Roy Evans was a solid family man, devoted to Pat and his son, Barry. But he slipped away on Christmas Day 2001 to visit the woman who had given birth to his other son, Nathan. What was her name?

Answer: Jane

Roy was impotent through guilt, having been with Jane when his first wife went into labour with his daughter and died. When Nathan arrived in his life it was a surprise as he knew nothing about him at all. After a few turbulent months, Nathan was to leave after his mother died of a terminal illness, but not before he nearly destroyed Barry's marriage in an act of revenge for Barry being the 'favoured' son.
3. The Mitchell family Christmas in 1996 was not a great success. Nine people sat down together in the bar of the Queen Vic, but there were undercurrents between them all, culminating in a wonderful script of cross-arguments. Who was to arrive and deliver the immortal words, 'Sorry we're late. Did we miss anything?'?

Answer: Ian Beale (and Lucy)

At the table were: Peggy, Phil, Grant and Tiff, George, Ted and Kathy, and Lorraine and Joe. Grant and Phil were not speaking, Grant and Tiff were at odds, Grant and Lorraine were just embarking on an affair, Joe was suffering from a mental illness, Phil and Kathy were splitting up, and neither Grant nor Phil were happy that Peggy and George had just announced their engagement. Just the ingredients for a happy family Christmas meal!
4. By 1992, Kathy was a single woman, but did not choose to stay in the Square to spend Christmas with her son, Ian, and his family. Flying off to sunnier climes with Tricky Dicky, where did she go?

Answer: Tenerife

It was a last minute decision to go on holiday with the market manager, and this upset Rachel more than anyone else, including Ian. Rachel and Dr Legg (both Jewish) had Christmas Dinner at the Fowler home along with various members of the family.
5. A Treasure Hunt was arranged for certain members of the cast on Boxing Day in 1989, starting with individual notes inviting them to be at the tree in the Square at 3pm. Where was the treasure?

Answer: under Pauline's bed

Pauline had spent Christmas in hospital and this was Arthur's way of cheering her up - having a whole batch of friends and family visit (with permission from the nurses!) at the end of a treasure hunt.
6. Who was surprised when her boyfriend invited her to her own wedding on Boxing Day in 1991?

Answer: Sharon

She was furious that Grant had arranged everything, including her dress, and refused to marry him. However, Michelle (who had no reason to like Grant herself) persuaded her that if she loved him, she ought to accept it and get married.
7. Which of the following people does NOT celebrate a birthday on Christmas Day?

Answer: Steven Beale

Steven Beale was born on Boxing Day 1989, and Liam Butcher on Christmas Day 1998. We learn that Nicky DiMarco's birthday is on Christmas Day in the 1999 Christmas episode, and that Nana Moon's birthday is Christmas Day in 2003.
8. Christmas appears to be a favourite time for men to 'pop the question', for many couples have become engaged, or announced an engagement, at that time. Which of the following couples did NOT become engaged (or announced an engagement) at Christmas?

Answer: Ian and Cindy

Peggy and George announced their engagement in 1996, Mark and Lisa agreed to get married in 2001, and Andy gave Debbie an engagement ring in 1985.
9. Who gave his wife glass fibre, filler, sandpaper, paint and other bits to fix a dented car, for Christmas in 1985?

Answer: Den

Angie had pranged the car shortly before and this was Den's way of getting his own back on her. Tony was not with his wife or daughter that Christmas, spending the day with his son Kelvin. Pete spent Christmas with his family, and Andy had a quiet day with Debs after giving her an engagement ring.
10. Mark spent the whole of Christmas 1991 trying to have a quiet word with his parents. When he eventually managed to talk to them, what was the subject of his revelation?

Answer: HIV

Pauline took the news better than her husband, who took a long time to come to terms with the truth of his son's condition. Mark was to remain HIV for eleven years before it turned into AIDS, and then he was to leave the Square to save his family the pain of watching him die.
