Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of Almanzo's two unruly nephews?

Answer: Rupert and Myron

Almanzo agrees to take care of Rupert and Myron while their parents take a much needed vacation. However, Almanzo soon begins to wish that he hadn't been so quick to agree to tend them.
2. What is the name of Almanzo's sister-in-law, the mother of the two unruly nephews?

Answer: Millie Wilder

It's obvious that Almanzo's sister-in-law, Millie, is the cause of her son's bad behavior. She doesn't believe in telling them no.
3. When Albert is pretending to be a werewolf to scare the bully Bart into behaving, he lifts a papier-mache log above his head.

Answer: False

It's actually a papier-mache rock. Carrie ruined the whole clever scheme, though, by coming out of the house and asking Albert what he was doing with the papier-mache rock.
4. Who teaches Mrs. Oleson's rich nephew how to swim?

Answer: Charles

The boy is working for Charles for the summer to make up for breaking the windows of the mercantile. He gets some much needed fatherly attention from Charles, who also teaches him how to swim.
5. What contest is Charles anxious to beat Almanzo in at the fair?

Answer: Arm Wrestling

Charles doesn't like Almanzo too well at first, because of Laura's attraction to him. So he is determined to beat Almanzo at arm wrestling. Charles goes so far as rigging up a crude weight-lifting machine in the barn, to get his arm ready.
6. What does Mr. Edwards tell Almanzo's niece Jenny he'll teach her to do?

Answer: Spit

When Laura introduces Jenny to Mr. Edwards, he says he'll teach her to spit, the way he taught Laura when she was a young girl.
7. Charles made something to help a schoolmate of Laura's who couldn't run. Why couldn't the girl run?

Answer: One leg was shorter than the other

The girl's parents treated her as though she was too delicate to do anything. Charles helped by fashioning a shoe for her that made her feet level with each other so that she could run.
8. Who pretended to be Dr. Baker when some men broke in at the blind school and ordered Laura to get the doctor for their companion who was hurt?

Answer: Charles

The men ordered Laura to get Doc Baker for the man who'd been shot, and they told her not to tell anyone that they were there. She made a smart choice though, when she couldn't find Doc Baker, and went and got her Pa, who did a pretty good job with the charade.
9. Who helps Charles decide to not make James and Cassandra go back to the orphanage?

Answer: Albert

After going with Charles to put James and Cassandra on the train back to the orphanage, Albert starts talking about his experience living in an orphanage. Hearing how Albert felt about living there helps Charles decide to chase down the train and rescue the children from possibly experiencing the same kind of things.
10. Mrs. Oleson is seen by some of the townspeople wearing a girdle/corset, and not much else.

Answer: True

Mrs. Oleson buys too small a dress, so in the kitchen at the restaurant, Nellie is trying to help her squeeze into a girdle. When Nellie tries to pull the laces tight, the laces snap, sending her mother careening into the dining area, much to the amusement of all the diners, and Mrs. Ingalls. (This is one of the funniest "LHOTP" moments to me.)
11. Mrs. Oleson buys Caroline's father's book because Albert tells her the book contains details of Caroline's secret affair.

Answer: False

Albert tells Mrs. Oleson the book tells about Caroline running around without any clothes on, so of course Mrs. Oleson buys all the copies of the book. (But Albert omitted to tell her that Caroline was a baby in a diaper at the time of the incident.)
12. When faced with a new dress code at school, which part of the "uniform" did Albert refuse to wear?

Answer: Black stockings

When Mrs. Oleson took over as teacher for a brief time, she instituted a new dress code for school. The boys were supposed to wear their black stockings to school, but Albert refused to wear them. Instead, he put coal dust on his legs, hoping to fool Mrs. Oleson.
13. What caused Caroline to become so upset in the episode called "I Do, Again?"

Answer: She found out she couldn't have any more children

In this episode, Caroline thought she was pregnant. She was very excited and told Charles she knew she was having a boy. But when she went to see Doc Baker, she found out that she was going through "the change" which of course meant she could never have any more babies.
14. In the episode called "The Lost Ones, part 2," what is the last name of the couple who want to adopt James and Cassandra?

Answer: Thompkins

As soon as the couple meets the children they want to adopt them. Charles feels uneasy about it though; he feels that Mr. Thompkins is very unfriendly.
15. In the episode called "The Lost Ones, part 2," why does the couple want to adopt a child?

Answer: To try to replace their daughter who had died

The Thompkins' daughter Lydia had died the previous year, and Mrs. Thompkins was very lonely and wanting a girl. She said Cassandra was the age her daughter would've been, had she not died. They didn't really want James too, but the Ingalls insisted the children not be separated.
16. Who shut the ice-house door when Belinda was in there, leaving her trapped over-night?

Answer: Willie

Nancy was the one who plotted to trap Belinda in there, but she cleverly got Willie to be the one to actually shut the door. She told Willie that someone left the door open, and innocently asked if the ice would melt. He said "of course" and went and shut it, without knowing that Belinda was inside.
17. Who is the first person to find out the truth about Nancy's background from the man at the orphanage?

Answer: Charles

Charles was passing by the orphanage, and the man who runs it was standing outside, and asked how Nancy was doing. They got talking, and Charles found out that Nancy had actually never known her mother, that she'd died when Nancy was a baby. Nancy had weaseled her way out of doing dishes and working in the kitchen by saying that it reminded her of being in the kitchen with her mother, and that it made her too sad to think of that.
18. In the episode "The Legend of Black Jake," how much was the ransom that was demanded when Nels was kidnapped?

Answer: 100 dollars

When Harriet found out the amount of the ransom, she refused to pay it, which set off a funny series of events.
19. In the episode titled "The Legend of Black Jake," what was the gun made of that Nancy and Willie were going to use to rob the bank?

Answer: Black liquorice

When they found out that no ransom was being paid for their father, Willie and Nancy decided to try to rob the bank for the ransom money. They were going to use a gun made of black liquorice, but Willie ended up eating the gun.
20. How many people ended up in the kidnapper's lair in the episode "The Legend of Black Jake," not counting the two "kidnappers"?

Answer: seven

Near the end of the episode, after all of the craziness was over, the people who ended up in the hideout were Nels, Harriet, Mr. Anderson, Doc Baker, Rev. Alden, Charles, and Almanzo.
