Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of creature was Bok, from the third Doctor serial "The Daemons"?

Answer: Gargoyle

"The Daemons" was the final serial of the 8th series of "Doctor Who", featuring Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, along with Companion Jo Grant.

The villain in this serial was the Master, masquerading as a vicar in a local church in the village of Devil's End. An archaeological dig at a Bronze Age burial mound called the Devil's Hump, as orchestrated by the Master, leads to the summoning of a daemon (an alien from the planet Daemos, long stranded and trapped on Earth) called Azal. Bok, the gargoyle, was Azal's servant.

Question by reedy
2. She was a companion to both the Fifth and Sixth Doctors. Her (full) first name was Perpugilliam; what was her last name?

Answer: Brown

Peri Brown joined the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) in his penultimate serial "Planet of Fire" and continued on with the Sixth Doctor for a total of eleven serials altogether. Purportedly an American from California, Peri was nevertheless played by British actress Nicola Bryant - at times it was noticeable that she wasn't really from the United States.

3. What was the Tenth Doctor's instruction that you should never do when the Weeping Angels were around? (This was also the name of the episode in which they first appeared).

Answer: Blink

The Weeping Angels, a creation of Steven Moffat, are only capable of moving when they are not being observed. This leads to some creepy moments in which a character looks at a stone statue, looks away for a brief moment, and looks back only to find the statue has moved, sometimes becoming uncomfortably close. Hence the Doctor's instruction to Sally Sparrow, that she shouldn't blink whilst around them.

Question by Daddy19
4. "The ___ of Morbius" featured the fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith as they faced deadly peril on the planet Karn. What 'B' word completes the title?

Answer: Brain

The Doctor was unhappy to find himself on the planet Karn, not liking that the Time Lords diverted him here for reasons unexplained. A relationship between the Time Lords and the Sisterhood of Karn existed, having to do with the 'Elixir'. With the arrival of the Doctor, the Sisterhood believes that he came to steal the last of their dwindling supply of Elixir, but there was a deeper menace behind things... a renegade Time Lord by the name of Morbius.

Morbius had supposedly been executed previously for his crimes, but unknown to all, his brain had survived. Now, he was (through the help of a cult of followers) trying to complete a new patchwork body to be able to give him back a real existence.

Question by reedy
5. What was the first name of the actor whose surname is Cribbins and who played Donna Noble's grandfather, Wilf?

Answer: Bernard

Bernard Cribbins has been in the entertainment industry since the 1950s. His career has included the UK chart hits "Right Said Fred" and "Hole in the Ground"), the voice of "The Wombles" and a part in the 1967 version of "Casino Royale".

Question by Daddy19
6. Which of these is the name of a Time Lord first encountered by the Fourth Doctor in the serial "The Deadly Assassin", and played by a different actor in each of his four appearances?

Answer: Borusa

With a different actor in the role four different times, it was evident that Borusa had experienced a number of regenerations. Borusa appeared in the following serials:

"The Deadly Assassin" - played by Angus MacKay (with Tom Baker)
"The Invasion of Time" - played by John Arnatt (with Tom Baker)
"Arc of Infinity" - played by Leonard Sachs (with Peter Davison)
"The Five Doctors" - Philip Latham (with the first Five Doctors)

Question by reedy
7. Which Fourth Doctor villain, played by Valentine Dyall, was the personification of entropy and chaos?

Answer: The Black Guardian

The sixteenth season of "Doctor Who" was a season-long story arc called "The Key to Time". There were actually six separate serials that tied in to the overarching story. The Doctor (Tom Baker) is tasked by the White Guardian (the embodiment of order, played by Cyril Luckham) to gather the six parts of the Key to Time in order to restore balance to the universe (it was apparently descending into chaos). Once he completes his task, however, the Black Guardian attempts to trick The Doctor into giving it to him instead.

Question by reedy
8. What planet, a "fantastic place" where the dogs have no noses, shares its name with a city in Spain?

Answer: Barcelona

The planet Barcelona was mentioned by both the ninth and tenth Doctors (Chris Eccleston and David Tennant) at the end of the 1st series, both before and immediately after regenerating. David Tennant also referred to it during the "Children in Need" special, which continued from the ending of "Parting of the Ways" (the regeneration), and details more of Rose and the (new) Doctor's first moments together as they travel back to 2006 London.

Question by reedy
9. What surname connects the two actors who played the Fourth and Sixth Doctors?

Answer: Baker

Tom Baker played the Fourth Doctor between 1974 and 1981 and was easily identifiable by wearing a long scarf and eating Jelly Babies.

Colin Baker played the Sixth Doctor between 1984 and 1986 and is no relation to Tom. In doing so, he became the first actor to play the Doctor having previously appeared in the franchise.

Question by Daddy19
10. During the fourth series, Donna Noble makes mention of insects that are disappearing from Earth. Eventually, following them helps the Doctor find where the Earth has been taken. Which insects?

Answer: Bees

It turns out that some of the bees on Earth are actually aliens creatures from the planet Melissa Majoria. When the bees sensed that a disaster was about to befall the Earth, they began leaving to return to their home planet. The movement of the bees made a disturbance on the Tandocca Scale (a series of wavelengths), which the Doctor was then able to trace and follow to where Davros had stolen the Earth (the Medusa Cascade).
