Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The TARDIS is an acronym made from which of the following words?

Answer: Time And Relative Dimensions In Space

The wording Time And Relative Dimensions In Space was explained in the very first episode, 'An Unearthly Child,' back in 1963.
2. Which of the following foes have not appeared in both the original series (1963-1989) and Nu-Who (2005 onwards)?

Answer: Angels

The Daleks and Cybermen really need no introduction, but for those not totally sure about the Macra, they first appeared in the 'The Macra Terror' (1967 - with Patrick Troughton as 'the Doctor') followed by an appearance in 'Gridlock' (2007 - with David Tennant in the role).

The Angels have only appeared since 2005 In 'Blink' (2007) and 'The Time of Angels' and 'Flesh and Stone' (2010).
3. In the original series, which story first saw the Daleks 'ELEVATE'?

Answer: Remembrance of the Daleks

This story centered on Coal Hill School (where we see a Dalek elevate up a staircase) and the Hand Of Omega.

Interestingly, during the story 'The Chase' (1965) it is implied that a Dalek could elevate, and in the story 'Revelation of the Daleks' (1985) it shows that both the Daleks and Davros are capable of hovering over the ground, but not elevating.
4. Colin Baker took over the mantle of 'The Doctor' in 1984 from Peter Davison at the end of the story 'Caves of Androzani'. However, it was not his first time on the show. In which episode did he first appear?

Answer: Arc of Infinity

He played Commander Maxil, and during the episode he managed to shoot the Doctor (not the best of starts it has to be said).
5. Which of the following actors has NOT played the role of 'The Master'?

Answer: Tony Simms

A bit crafty of me I confess, as it was John Simm who actually portrayed the role during the Tennant years.

Derek Jacobi played the Master in 'Utopia' (mostly unaware of who he was until his fob watch was revealed), whilst Anthony Ainley played the role during 1981 through to 1989 (desperately trying to outwit Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy's Doctors all to no avail).

Peter Pratt, however, may stump some of you playing the role in the story 'The Deadly Assassin' (1976) as the horribly disfigured Master nearing the end of his life and attempting to use the power of The Eye of Harmony (on Gallifrey) to trigger a new set of regenerations.
6. In which episode of 'Doctor Who' do we not see either the Doctor, or his companion of the time, at all?

Answer: Mission to the Unknown

'Mission to the Unknown', screened on 6 October 1965, is often referred to as "Dalek Cutaway" and not only does it see the absence of 'the Doctor' but also the absence of the regular cast.

It was a one-off episode designed to be an introduction to the 12 part story "The Dalek Masterplan".

Interestingly however, despite not appearing in the episode, William Hartnell ('the Doctor') was credited on-screen as "Dr Who" as his contract specified that he would be for all episodes, regardless if he made an appearance or not.
7. There has been more than one actor playing the role of the Doctor on the TV show, other than the official ones, but which of the following has NOT done so?

Answer: Peter Butterworth

Peter Butterworth played the role of the 'Meddling Monk' (or 'Monk') in the episodes 'The Meddling Monk' and 'The Dalek's Master Plan' during William Hatnell's era.

Richard Hurndall played the role of the first Doctor in the story 'The Five Doctors', whilst Michael Jayston played the role of 'The Valeyard' during the 'Trial of a Time Lord' (Colin Baker's era). The Valeyard was portrayed as an evil version of the Doctor, existing somewhere between his twelfth and final incarnations.

Adrian Gibbs played 'the Watcher' in 'Logopolis' (Tom Baker's era) who we eventually learn, in the last episode, is the Doctor.
8. Did the Doctor ever have a brother?

Answer: Yes

In the episode "Smith and Jones", when Mr Stoker is doing his patient rounds with the student doctors, Martha, wishing to know if she had seen him earlier, puts this question to the 'Doctor' who replies "No, not anymore - Just me".
9. There has only been one occasion where a new lead has been credited with top billing in the final story of an outgoing doctor (in the end title sequence). Which actor was the fortunate chap?

Answer: Colin Baker

There is no official explanation as to why Colin Baker was credited before Peter Davison however, the end titles used (where the doctor's face vanishing) saw Colin Baker's face used (for the first time) and it is conceivable that the titles were listed on this basis.

It is the only time that this has happened in the history of the show.
10. Which James Bond actor managed to get appointed to the position of Lord President of the High Council of the Time Lords?

Answer: Timothy Dalton

He played Rassilon in the story 'The End of Time' (2009/10).

Dalton is, to date (2012), the only actor to have played "James Bond" and to have also been involved in the "Doctor Who" universe.
