Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Julian Glover plays King Richard in "The Crusade". Whom does he play in "City of Death"?

Answer: Scaroth

Scaroth has splintered into many pieces across time. His alias in Paris is Count Scarlioni; during the Renaissance, he's Captain Tancredi.
2. Which two actors could say that they played a supporting role on the show before being cast as the Doctor?

Answer: Colin Baker and Peter Capaldi

Baker plays Maxil in "Arc of Infinity"; Capaldi plays Caecilius in "The Fires of Pompeii". Baker says on the DVD commentary track for "Arc of Infinity" that he was wary of taking the Maxil part, believing that doing so would take him out of the running to be the Doctor later.
3. David Troughton's first role on "Doctor Who" is as an extra in "The Enemy of the World". In which of these stories does he not also have a part?

Answer: The Mark of the Rani

According to DVD extras, his father Patrick Troughton (the Second Doctor) asked if his son could have a bit part in one of his stories to get him used to working on a set. Apparently, he acted so well that the director had to rein him in. He later had more substantial supporting roles as Private Moor, King Peladon, and Professor Hobbes.
4. Pauline Collins is Samantha in the Second Doctor story "The Faceless Ones". Which historical personage does she play in the Tenth Doctor tale "Tooth and Claw"?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria is not amused by the Doctor and Rose taking the werewolf threat so lightly, so she banishes them from the British Empire (a punishment that they don't take seriously) and founds Torchwood to combat alien threats in the future. Collins was offered the chance to stay on the show in her Samantha role and become a companion, but declined.
5. Which "Doctor Who" companion encounters a perfect double of herself, Ann, in the 1920s?

Answer: Nyssa

Nyssa meets Ann Talbot in "Black Orchid". Sarah Sutton plays both girls, who wear identical dresses and masks to a dance party. It's amazing how a Traken woman and an Earth woman can look so identical.
6. Who starts out playing a "Doctor Who" companion only to return seasons later in another role?

Answer: Jacqueline Hill

Hill plays Barbara, one of the first "Doctor Who" companions. She and Ian don't come time traveling by choice but are more or less kidnapped. In season 18, she plays Lexa opposite Tom Baker in "Meglos".
7. Jean Marsh plays Joanna in "The Crusade" and Sara Kingdom in "The Daleks' Master Plan". What other role does she have?

Answer: Morgaine in "Battlefield"

Sara is considered a companion, whereas Morgaine is the villain of her story. Morgaine has a strong sense of honor; when she finds out that her son didn't pay for a drink in a bar, she repays the debt by restoring the innkeeper's sight.
8. John Normington plays the sinister Morgus in "The Caves of Androzani". He plays a more pleasant character, Trevor Sigma, in which later story?

Answer: The Happiness Patrol

He's a census taker visiting Terra Alpha to investigate disappearances. The Doctor says that his college nickname was Theta Sigma.
9. Freema Agyeman plays the Doctor's companion Martha Jones. She also plays Adeola in "Army of Ghosts". What is the relationship between the characters?

Answer: Cousins

Martha explains in "Smith and Jones" that her cousin Adeola was killed in the Canary Wharf battle. Rather than carrying any story significance, it's just a nod to the fact that the same actress plays both parts.
10. Which actor plays two separate roles in the "Doctor Who" story where his companion character is introduced?

Answer: Peter Purves

Purves' character Morton Dill appears in part three of "The Chase". Later in the serial, Purves plays Steven Taylor, who goes on to travel with the Doctor. Marter has a part in "Carnival of Monsters" separate from his role of Harry Sullivan in later seasons.
11. Sometimes the actor who plays the Doctor also gets to play the villain. Which actor doesn't play a villain in one of his stories?

Answer: Christopher Eccleston

Eccleston plays only the Doctor during his tenure. Hartnell is the Abbot of Amboise in "The Massacre", a story in which the Doctor is largely absent. The Abbot is part of the conspiracy to kill Coligny. In "The Enemy of the World", Troughton plays the dictator Salamander, whom the Doctor impersonates on several occasions.

In the Davison story "Arc of Infinity", Omega returns to the universe and takes the form of the Fifth Doctor, but his body quickly starts to deteriorate. Tom Baker also has some time playing the villain in "Meglos".
12. Lynda Baron is Captain Wrack in "Enlightenment" but appears in a much earlier season in a voice-only capacity in which story?

Answer: The Gunfighters

She sings the infamous "Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon" over the action. It's also sung in-story by Steven and Kate. Baron appears in the 2011 episode "Closing Time" too.
13. Fiona Walker's first role is in the first season story "The Keys of Marinus". Her next comes in season 25's "Silver Nemesis". Her character in the latter story, Lady Peinforte, is proficient in what activity?

Answer: Archery

She is also a sorceress. After the Doctor launches the Nemesis she created into space, she uses her sorcery to travel into the future to reclaim it.
14. Which actor's "Doctor Who" roles include Keith Gold, Henry Gordon Jago, and Colonel Hugh?

Answer: Christopher Benjamin

These characters come from, respectively, "Inferno", "The Talons of Weng-Chiang", and "The Unicorn and the Wasp". John Bennett appears in "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" as well as "Invasion of the Dinosaurs". Michael Cochrane has different roles in two serials: "Black Orchid" and "Ghost Light". Paul Darrow appears in "Timelash" and "The Ambassadors of Death".
15. This actor plays different roles in no fewer than six "Doctor Who" stories from 1966 to 1988. In addition, he appears in the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" film series, as well as the series "Blake's 7". Who is he?

Answer: Michael Sheard

His stories are "The Ark", "The Mind of Evil", "Pyramids of Mars", "The Invisible Enemy", "Castrovalva", and "Remembrance of the Daleks". In "The Empire Strikes Back", he plays Admiral Ozzel. Julian Glover also appears in all four of these franchises.
