Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The four shows were: "M*A*S*H", "Mary Tyler Moore", "All in the Family", and "The Bob Newhart Show". Though they all ran from the years 1972-77, two of them aired before 1972. Which ones?

Answer: "Mary Tyler Moore" and "All in the Family"

"Mary Tyler Moore" debuted in 1970, and "All in the Family" in 1971. "M*A*S*H" and "The Bob Newhart Show" first aired in 1972.
2. Which of the four shows had the most direct spinoffs?

Answer: All in the Family

"All in the Family" had five direct spinoffs. They were "The Jeffersons", "Maude", "Archie Bunker's Place", "Gloria", and the very short-lived "704 Hauser". "M*A*S*H" had one or two - "Aftermash" and "Trapper John, MD" (the latter is sometimes considered a spin-off of the movie, not the TV show). "Mary Tyler Moore" had three - "Rhoda", "Phyllis", and "Lou Grant". "The Bob Newhart Show" had one, "Newhart", which was unusual because the viewer did not learn it was a spinoff until the last episode, which had Bob Newhart waking up in bed with his wife from "The Bob Newhart Show", Emily, played by Suzanne Pleshette!

In addition to the above-mentioned spinoffs, some of the shows also had spinoffs of the spinoffs (sort of like being grandparents).
3. On which show did we find Dr. Jerry Robinson, an orthodontist?

Answer: The Bob Newhart Show

Peter Bonerz played Dr. Jerry Robinson in every episode of the show. His office was across the hall from Bob Newhart's, and they shared the same receptionist, played by Marcia Wallace.
4. Which show had a regular supporting character who was a dry cleaner?

Answer: All in the Family

George Jefferson was played by Sherman Helmsley. This role was a groundbreaker in American TV because he played a black man who was making it big in business. Over the course of the show, his business did so well that his family actually moved in next to the Bunker family (much to Archie's displeasure!). "The Jeffersons" became a successful spinoff of "All in the Family", in which the Jefferson family moved to a penthouse in a ritzy apartment building, far eclipsing the Bunker family financially.
5. Betty White had a hilarious supporting role in one of the series. Who did she play?

Answer: Sue Ann Nivens

On "Mary Tyler Moore", Sue Ann Nivens was a lascivious lady with a yen for Lou Grant. Sue Ann hosted a cooking show on WJM-TV, which gave her plenty of opportunities to pursue Lou. She never caught him, though!
6. Which show's final episode had the largest TV audience (at the time, the largest in history)?

Answer: M*A*S*H

The series finale of "M*A*S*H", a 2 1/2-hour movie, first aired on February 28, 1983. Entitled "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen", it depicted the departure from Korea of the characters when an armistice was agreed to, ending the fighting. Alan Alda starred in, collaborated in the writing of, and directed the finale. Until it was eclipsed by the viewership of the 2010 Super Bowl, it was the most-watched TV show in the history of the US, with more than 120 million viewers.
7. Which show was inspired by a British show?

Answer: All in the Family

"Till Death Do Us Part" aired in the UK before "All in the Family" was developed. The American show featured many of the same themes, tailored to US culture.
8. Which character, who was the subject of a spinoff later on, coined the phrase, "God'll getcha for that!"?

Answer: Maude Findlay

On "All in the Family", Maude Findlay, played by Beatrice Arthur, was Edith Bunker's cousin and a major thorn in Archie Bunker's side. Beatrice Arthur went on to star in both the spinoff "Maude" and later in the hugely successful "Golden Girls".
9. One show featured a character named Elliot Carlin. What was Mr. Carlin's role?

Answer: A group therapy patient

On "The Bob Newhart Show", Elliot Carlin was Dr. Bob Hartley's patient of longest duration, who showed no sign ever of improving his psychological health. He was played by Jack Riley, who has a wide range of roles in TV and who voiced the character Stu Pickles in "Rugrats".
10. Which show(s) was/were set in the Upper Midwest of the USA?

Answer: "Mary Tyler Moore" and "The Bob Newhart Show"

"Mary Tyler Moore" was set in Minneapolis; "The Bob Newhart Show" was set in Chicago. "All in the Family" was set in Queens, New York.
11. Which show featured a Swedish landlady?

Answer: Mary Tyler Moore

Phyllis Lindstrom, played by Cloris Leachman, lived on the ground floor of the house in Minneapolis where Mary Richards rented the second floor. Mary's closest friend Rhoda Morganstern, played by Valerie Harper, lived in an attic apartment in the same house. Phyllis was married to a dermatologist, Lars, who never actually appeared on the show, and they had a little girl, Bess, who was much more level-headed than her mother.
12. Which show featured a delusional intelligence agent and a gentle psychiatrist?

Answer: M*A*S*H

These were two of the best supporting roles ever. Colonel Flagg, played by Edward Winter, and Sidney Freedman, played by Alan Arbus, appeared here and there throughout the series. Although he only played in seven episodes, Winter's portrayal of a very paranoid but very stupid CIA agent is one of the many highlights of the series. Arbus' psychiatrist, Sidney Freeman appeared in twelve episodes.

His calm fatherliness provided a counterpoint to the emotionalism of the people who needed his professional help.
13. Which show regularly featured a befuddled flight navigator?

Answer: The Bob Newhart Show

Howard Borden was a character that people who fear flying should never ever see. Although he took his job seriously, he was chronically addled and confused - NOT an inspiring example of someone responsible for the lives of hundreds of passengers. Played by Bill Daily (who had also played an astronaut in training in "I Dream of Jeannie"), Borden was the Hartley's neighbor and close friend.

He eventually married Bob Hartley's sister Ellen on the show.
14. In which show was William Christopher a regular?

Answer: M*A*S*H

Christopher played Father Mulcahy, the chaplain assigned to the M*A*S*H unit. He was one of the few regular cast members who remained with the show from start to finish (the others were Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, and Loretta Swit).
15. "M*A*S*H" was about a surgical hospital in Korea during the Korean War. Where were the series' outdoor scenes actually shot?

Answer: a state park in Calabasas, California

Malibu Creek State Park is about 25 miles from Los Angeles. It was also used as a location in the movie "The Planet of the Apes".
