Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The quote, "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! But I've got oven mitts" is from "The Colbert Report".

Answer: true

This quote is from the November 8th, 2005 show of "The Colbert Report" and it was his introductory phrase and as always was followed by "This is the Colbert Report!" "The Colbert Report"'s first official show was on October 17th, 2005 even though it started as a segment of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart".
2. "Bastille. It's French for "Why are you stabbing me? I just released you from prison?" came from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Answer: true

It was said by correspondent Ed Helms about France's holiday, Bastille Day, held on July 14th. This holiday celebrates the storming of the Bastille prison and the beginning of the uprising against King Louis XVI. Now, about Ed Helms. He was born Edward Helms on January 24th, 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia.

He stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and graduated from Oberlin College. Helms has done voiceover work on commercials for Burger King, Lycos, and other companies and also plays the banjo. On "The Daily Show", he was the host of the segments "Mark Your Calendar", "Ad Nauseum", and "Digital Watch".
3. The statement, "You've probably heard the news, unless you were in a hole, in which case, you were probably the guy we caught" was on an episode of "The Colbert Report".

Answer: false

Stewart said this after the capture of Saddam Hussein on December 13th, 2003 in a foxhole in the town of ad-Dawr, Iraq which is near Tikrit. Operation Red Dawn, as it was called, was actually pulled from the 1984 film "Red Dawn" starring Patrick Swayze, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey and C. Thomas Howell.

The names of the sites where troops searched were also based on the movie, called Wolverine and Wolverine 2 from the name Swayze gave to the group of teenagers who were rebelling against the invading Soviet troops.
4. "That's why I continue to say that Oregon is California's Canada" was featured on "The Colbert Report".

Answer: true

Oregon is always an object of criticism to Colbert whenever he can fit it into the show. He first accused Oregon of being California's Canada, meaning that Oregon isn't worth much. Then, during a April 6th, 2006 interview with Oregon representative Darlene Hooley, he called it "Washington's Mexico" and on July 30th, Colbert said that he had always called it "Idaho's Portugal", just furthur his mocking of the internet database, Wikipedia.
5. On "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" Stewart once said, " Al Sharpton did have a point, that is, that Howard Dean did not employ a black or Latino worker during his tenure as governor... of 'Vermont', a fact affirmed by Vermont's minority population. I believe his name is Eddie."

Answer: true

Here's some interesting info on the lovely state of Vermont. Its capital Montpelier is the only US capital without a McDonald's and is also the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States. Also, in a ratio of cows to people, it has the most dairy cows in the country, and is one of four states that don't allow billboards along with Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine. And if you're ever in Vermont, you might want to check out the oddly named towns of Bread Loaf, Mosquitoville, Notown, Moscow, and the pleasant Satans Kingdom.
6. "We ate Frank DeCaro last night... and he was delicious" was said by Stephen Colbert on "The Colbert Report".

Answer: false

This was said on "The Daily Show" but not by Jon Stewart, instead it was said by correspondent Rob Corrdry. Robert Corrdry was born on February 4, 1971 in Weymouth, Massachusetts and has been married to his wife Sandra since 2002. They have a daughter Sloane Sullivan who was born on July 3, 2006. Rob is best known for his work on "The Daily Show" and in the segment "This Week in God" and his often embarassing interviews of prominent people.

When told that most teenagers get their news from "The Daily Show" he said, "Only fair...I get most of my comedy from Fox News." Frank DeCaro was also on "The Daily Show" for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003 and was the correspondent for "Out at the Movies". Now DeCaro has a show on Sirius Satellite Radio and is a panelist on the Game Show Network's "I've Got A Secret".
7. "I don't trust books: they're all fact, no heart" was a statement by Stephen Colbert on "The Colbert Report".

Answer: true

This quote was from the first episode of "The Colbert Report" and demonstrates how Stephen doesn't like books or the truth. Well, he's a fan of not necessarily the truth but instead his own truth. Either way it's still funny.
8. On "The Daily Show", Stephen Colbert said, "Don't touch that dial, and if your TV has a dial, go buy a new one."

Answer: false

Though Colbert has been on "The Daily Show" longer than he's been on his own show, this saying is all "Colbert Report". It was the intro saying on the December 8th episode of the report. It was also the first episode to have "Movies That are Destroying America" which included "The Family Stone" ("You people in Hollywood may think it's okay to shirk your responsibilities, trip the light fantastic and chill out man, but real Americans work for a living."); "Brokeback Mountain"; and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" ("This movie has been labeled a Christian allegory because its hero, Aslan the lion, sacrifices his life on a hill top to save the world and throught the power of love, rises from the grave to defeat evil. Sorry- doesn't work as an allegory. Last time I checked, Jesus wasn't a lion.")
9. Jon Stewart said, "George Bush... great president, or the greatest president?" on an episode of "The Daily Show".

Answer: false

Alas, Jon is not the one that believes George Bush is the country's savior, it would be Stephen Colbert. In his endless quest to spread the truth, or at least his truth, he has created great quotes such as the one above and this one: "Sometimes it takes a crazy person to see the truth. If so, then I'm a freaking lunatic." and "I can't prove it, but I can say it."
10. Jon Stewert said, "I'm downgrading this story from 'incredibly hilarious', to 'still funny, but a little sad'." on "The Daily Show".

Answer: true

This particular quote was said after Harry Whittington suffered a heart attack while in the hospital after being accidentally shot in the face by Vice President Dick Cheney. And as correspondent Ed Helms says, "Jon, I'm being told Whittington's condition has now been upgraded from 'stable' to 'stable but still shot in the face by the vice president. It's good news really."
11. The segments "The Word", "Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger" and "Better Know a District" are all from "The Colbert Report".

Answer: true

These three segments are just few of many odd and hilarious parts of the show that is "The Colbert Report". "The Word" is a popular segment were Colbert picks a seemingly random word and talks about the current events relating to that word while a bulletpoint on the other side of the screen makes ironic and funny comments on whatever Stephen's ranting about.

Some past examples of "Words" include "Whatever, Satisfied?, Metaphorically, I am the Great and Powerful Oz, and the ever popular: Truthiness".

Another segment, "Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger", parodies on things such as Ebert and Roeper's "Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down" system or TV Guides "Cheers or Jeers". Here, Colbert either gives people or current events a tip of the hat, or a wag of the finger, or sometimes both for different reasons. And last, "Better Know a District" is where he travels to all 434 districts (excluding California's 50th district) and does comical interviews of the representives.

While "The Word" the most common, as it appears nearly every show, many segments appear only once or twice such as: "Fantasy Colbert League", "Gravitas-off", "Stephen Settles the Debate", "So Awful We Can't Bear to Show You", "Around the World in 11.6 Seconds", "Bring 'Em Back or Leave 'Em Dead", "Un-American News", "Call from Wilford Brumley", "Campaign Against Humbuggery", "Stephen Colbert Balls-For Kidz!", "This Week in History", "Who's Attacking Me Now?", "Was It Really That Bad?", "The Craziest F#?king Thing I've Ever Heard", "Stephen's Sound Advice", "Who's Honoring/Not Honoring Me Now", "Easter Under Attack", "The Inbox", "On the phone", "Exclusive Fake Interviews", "Stephen Makes it Simple", "Road to World War III", and "The Four Horsemen of the Apopcalypse".
12. "The Colbert Report" also features the segments: "This Week in God", "A Moment of Zen" and "Future Shock."

Answer: false

Though "The Colbert Report" has tons of segments, these three are from "The Daily Show". "This Week in God" has been hosted by Stephen Colbert (from 1997-2005) and Rob Corrdry (2005-2006) and is a review of everything "God has done this week". To activate the "God Machine" one has to pull the God Lever or "God Rod", a black lever with a yellow knob that has a red button on top, and it subsequently shows random religious items on the screen. Once it has been activated, a sound effect (Colbert saying beebooboobee...boop) will continue until it stops on a picture and the host talks about it. "Future Shock" is a newer segment that debuted on August 23, 2006 and is hosted by Samantha Bee.

It covers new advancments in technology like robots and what the 300 millionth baby will look like. "The Moment of Zen" is a segment that has been around for every single episode of "The Daily Show".

It is simply an extention of a news clip shown earlier in the show, often featuring government officials doing random things.
13. Rob Corddry, Steve Carell, and Ed Helms were correspondents on "The Daily Show".

Answer: true

"The Daily Show" has had many correspondents over its many years in existance while "The Colbert Report" has no correspondents at all. In fact, Colbert was a correspondent for "The Daily Show" for eight years, spanning from 1997 to 2005 which is when he recieved his own show on Comedy Central.

Some of his segments included "Even Stephen" along with Steve Carell, "This Week in God" (before Rob Corrdry did it), and "The Jobbing of America". "The Colbert Report" started out as a segment that he hosted and it became so popular, it became a spin-off.
14. The theme song for "The Colbert Report" is called "Dog on Fire" and is performed by Cheap Trick.

Answer: false

The theme song to "The Colbert Report" is called "Baby Mumbles" and is in fact performed by the band Cheap Trick. They are most famous for the songs "I Want You To Want Me" and "Surrender". "The Daily Show" theme song is called "Dog on Fire" and was written by Bob Mould and performed by They Might Be Giants.
15. Jon Stewert's show "The Daily Show" features several "boards" including the "On Notice" board, the "Dead to Me" board, and the "Called Out" board.

Answer: false

All of the boards belong to Stephen Colbert himself. Many things/people that are displeasing to him have been placed "On Notice" including grizzly bears, Barbara Streisand, Michael Adams, The British Empire, James Brady, Black Hole at the Center of Galaxy, the Toronto Raptors, Journal of Paleolimnology, Todd Rundgren, Israeli Newspapers, Lutherans, irony, pant cuffs, E Street Band, the Sea, and Mort Zuckerman.

The "Dead to Me" board is shorter and reserved for the really hated things like New York Intellectuals, men with beards, California's 50th district, Heather Clark, bowtie pasta, owls, CNN en Espanol, screw-cap wines, Hamas, and the cast of 'Friends'.

The "Called Out" board has only been used once, for Colbert's friend, Jon Stewert. On a August 14th episode of "The Daily Show", Colbert showed up and asked Stewert to apologize to Geraldo Rivera after he made fun of Rivera.

He did this after an interview with Bill O'Reilly where Rivera said that "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" just made fun of "footage of old ladies slipping on ice".

When Stewert wouldn't apologize, Colbert said that Jon was now "On Notice", but actually ended up on the "Called Out" board, which is just a whiteboard with the title written in sloppy block letters. However, Stewert is now off the board because after he was "called out", he came on "The Colbert Report" and apologized while wearing Geraldo Rivera's trademark moustache.
