Comedy Mixture - Average Trivia Questions

1. The four shows were: "M*A*S*H", "Mary Tyler Moore", "All in the Family", and "The Bob Newhart Show". Though they all ran from the years 1972-77, two of them aired before 1972. Which ones?

From Quiz
Ahhh, Those Saturday Nights!

Answer: "Mary Tyler Moore" and "All in the Family"

"Mary Tyler Moore" debuted in 1970, and "All in the Family" in 1971. "M*A*S*H" and "The Bob Newhart Show" first aired in 1972.

2. Which sitcom began in 2003 with Alan's wife Judith throwing him out of their house, leading to him having to move in with his brother?

From Quiz Love, Unsuccessfully

Answer: Two and a Half Men

When Judith threw Alan out of their house, he went to his brother Charlie's house, asking to stay for the night. One night turned into many years; Alan even managed to keep living in Charlie's house after Charlie was killed off at the beginning of the show's ninth season and the house was sold. Though Alan and Judith divorced soon after she threw him out, Judith made regular appearances throughout the show, particularly in situations involving her and Alan's son Jake, the "half man" in the show's title. Judith was played by Marin Hinkle, and Alan by Jon Cryer. Charlie Sheen initially starred as Charlie Harper; when he was killed off, Ashton Kutcher joined the show's cast as Walden Schmidt, the new owner of Charlie's house who let Alan live with him.

3. What was the name of the South African born actor who co-starred in "Hancock's Half Hour" and was said to have the dirtiest laugh ever heard on TV?

From Quiz Comedy Crack-Ups

Answer: Sid James

Just thinking of Sid James's laugh makes me laugh! Sid James, born Solomon Joel Cohen, was born in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa. After the second world war, he relocated to Britain, where he landed his first comedy role in "The Lavender Hill Mob". He is best known for the "Carry on" series and was once described as having "a face like an unmade bed"! LOL!

4. One of the most hilarious episodes on "Keeping Up Appearances" is titled "Riparian Entertainments". Which character tries to organise a picnic on the riverside?

From Quiz Laugh Along the Wave

Answer: Hyacinth

Hyacinth Bucket ("it's pronounced Bouquet") is the snobbish woman we're looking for. Patricia Routledge clearly enjoys playing this character. In this episode from the last season, Hyacinth invites her friends and relatives to have "a waterside buffet with riparian entertainment". Alas, all her plans fall into the water - and Hyacinth as well. "Keeping Up Appearances" ran five seasons, from 1990 until 1995. Daisy (the sloppy one), Rose (the temptress in the miniskirt) and Violet (the rich and unhappy married one) are Hyacinth's three sisters.

5. In which UK show did the character Victor Meldrew often exclaim "I don't believe it" when something went wrong?

From Quiz Comedy Catchphrases

Answer: One Foot in the Grave

'One Foot in the Grave' centred around the character of Victor Meldrew, a man forced to take early retirement at 60. The archetypal "grumpy old man" Victor did not take the ludicrous things which happened to him in his stride and he frequently exclaimed "I don't believe it" when they occured. The show ran for five series in the 1990s with a sixth series a few years later in 2000. The character of Victor Meldrew was played by the Scottish actor Richard Wilson.

6. Arguably one of America's greatest comedy creations of all time is 'Seinfeld', starring the observational comedian himself Jerry Seinfeld. In which US city was the series set?

From Quiz Splitting Our Sides

Answer: New York City

Following the lives of television's most dysfunctional group of friends ever, 'Seinfeld' was a huge hit for NBC in America, rivalling and occasionally surpassing its other cherished series 'Cheers'. Jerry Seinfeld played a version of himself, while Jason Alexander was born to play George Costanza, a short, stocky, bald man with terrible luck and Jerry's best friend. Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Elaine Benes, a former girlfriend of Jerry who stayed friends with him after they split up. Michael Richards played Cosmo Kramer, Jerry's oddball neighbour from across the hall. Frequently seen mooching off Jerry, Kramer's humour derives from his odd gestures and slapstick comedy. The programme ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998 and is a prime example of comedy done right.

7. "Everybody Loves Raymond" aired from 1996 to 2005 on CBS. The series centered around Ray Romano and his family as they navigated through marriage, life, and in-laws. What's wrong with this sitcom?

From Quiz What's Wrong With This Sitcom?

Answer: The central character's name was Ray Barone

The series "Everybody Loves Raymond" was based on the comedy of Ray Ramano. In fact, several of the shows that aired on CBS were actual events that happened to Ray or a member of the cast or crew. To help with the comedy in the show were Ray's wife Debra, his police officer brother, Robert, and his nosy parents/neighbors, Marie and Frank. When "Everybody Loves Raymond" appeared in 1996, Ray Ramano didn't like the title, but by the series premiere he couldn't change it.

8. Who was Hooterville's telephone operator?

From Quiz Those Hooterville Folks! Part II

11. This comedy deals with a man moving into a flat with two girls. "Three's Company" aired in the USA and ran from 1977 to 1984. What was it called in the UK?

From Quiz British Comedies Adapted for American Television

Answer: Man About the House

An enormously successful comedy on both sides of the Atlantic, "Man about the House" starred Richard O'Sullivan, Paula Wilcox and Sally Thompsett. Although the girls were originally looking for a female to share the flat, the fact that Robin (Richard O'Sullivan) was a catering student was too good an opportunity for them to pass up. It ran for 169 episodes in the US as "Three's Company" and starred John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers.

12. On "Family Matters", how many children did Carl and Harriette Winslow have at the beginning of the series?

From Quiz How Many Children Were There?

Answer: 3

14. If I were to mention the names Edina, Patsy and Saffy, which fab British comedy show would I be thinking of?

From Quiz Comedy Crack-Ups

Answer: Absolutely Fabulous

"Absolutely Fabulous", in my opinion, is one of the funniest comedy of it's time. First aired by the BBC in 1992, it tells the story of Edina Monsoon (played by Jennifer Saunders), a middle aged, twice divorced PR consultant, desperate to stay young and trendy. Patsy (Edina's best friend, played by Joanna Lumley) is an alcoholic, drug-abusing middle aged woman who holds a position in a fashion magazine, which appears to involve no work at all! Saffy, the long suffering daughter of Edina (played by Julia Sawalha) spends most of her time resolving the crises caused by her mother's and Patsy's lifestyles.

15. What is the name of the vessel commonly known as "The Love Boat" in the eponymous comedy?

From Quiz Laugh Along the Wave

Answer: Pacific Princess

"Love is in the air..." So starts the tune to "The Love Boat", a cruise ship on which we find (among others) Captain Merill Stubing (played by Gavin MacLeod), bartender Isaac Washington ( a role by Ted Lange) and cruise director Julie McCoy (played by Lauren Tewes). The title credits show that the cruise ship is named the "Pacific Princess". The series ran ten seasons, from 1977 until 1987. The Devilfish is one of the submarines in the war drama "The Winds of War" and its sequel "War and Remembrance". The "Bounty" is the ship on which a mutiny found place, the subject of several movies. The "Poseidon" is the cruise ship that sinks in the movie "The Poseidon Adventure".

17. "Coach" starring Craig T. Nelson was an ABC sitcom about a baseball coach for Minnesota State University. What's wrong with this sitcom?

From Quiz What's Wrong With This Sitcom?

Answer: The show was about a football coach; not baseball coach

"Coach" aired on CBS from 1989 to 1997 with 200 episodes. The series revolved around Minnesota football coach Hayden Fox and the antics of his family and friends. The show's creator, Barry Kemp, based Hayden Fox on real life football coach Hayden Fry from the University of Iowa. In fact, any outdoor campus scenes were shot on the University of Iowa campus.
