Adam wanted a heir to the Chandler fortune so he wanted to get his wife, Brooke, pregnant. However, it was revealed that Brooke could not carry a child to term so he slept with Dixie. JR was born as Adam Chandler, Jr. (he started going by the name of "JR" in 2001) nine months later and Adam schemed to get full custody of his son.

Lee kidnapped JR to get revenge on Adam since he claimed that Adam killed his wife (Lee's wife was Joy Hawkins). He kept JR in a cage at a facility that stored carnival equipment. Lee, also, kidnapped Hayley and gave her a poison tattoo here. Edmund and Mateo rescued both JR and Hayley whereas Lee was arrested and died in his jail cell of an aneurysm.

JR started to rebel, around this time, and he paid Philomena Lacy to write a term paper for him. His teacher found out about this and he failed the assignment. A little while after this, JR got into a car accident with his sister, Hayley, who was pregnant. The baby survived the accident.

Leslie kidnapped JR in order to lure in his mother, Dixie, who she hated since Dixie was married to Tad, the man that Leslie wanted. Leslie planned to lure Dixie to the top of Chandler Enterprises and kill her. However, during a struggle, Leslie went over the side of the building and David caught on to her hand.

She fell and it was not revealed if David intentionally let go of her hand or not.

Bennett was cast as a recast JR and first played him in November of 2001. When he was JR, the character slept with Frankie Stone, grieved for the "death" of Dixie, and continued to have a rocky relationship with his father, Adam. Jesse McCartney played JR from 1998 to 2001, Jacob Young assumed the role of JR in October of 2003, and Kevin Alexander played JR in the early to mid 1990s.

JR dated Laurie Lewis and Laurie's father disapproved of their relationship because he blamed Adam for laying him off at Chandler Enterprises. When he got laid off, he was forced to work at a low paying job. Since Laurie's father could not afford to pay all the bills, Laurie got a job as a waitress at BJ's and also babysat Pete Cortlandt. Laurie and her father moved to Minnesota in June of 2003 when her father went into rehab to treat his alcoholism.

Jr, one night in a drunken fit, got behind the wheel of his car with Babe in the passenger's seat. He mowed down Amanda but Babe confessed to hitting Amanda. Eventually, Amanda found out that JR had ran her down but JR was never convicted of this crime. Babe initially confessed to driving the car that hit Amanda so that JR would not go to prison since she wanted Adam Chandler III (or Little Adam) to have a father.

JR held Tad at gunpoint to find out where Jamie and Babe went with his son (JR had just found out, at this time, that his son was alive). JR, eventually, tracked down Babe and Jamie in New Orleans and they were arrested. Jamie and Babe were sentenced to community service. Babe still had feelings for JR and they reunited in late 2005.

JR and Jamie wanted to get back at Josh since he pursued Babe so they both conspired to lock him in a meatlocker. Babe found out about this and went to the meatlocker to free Josh. A couple of months after this, Babe and Josh had a one night stand. Eventually, Jamie and Josh became civil towards each other but JR and Josh always hated each other.

During the drug trafficking story that began in 2001, JR got high off of ecstasy and had a drug problem. We found out that a drug lord named Proteus smuggled drugs into Pine Valley (Proteus was revealed to be Vanessa Bennett Cortlandt). JR, eventually, kicked his drug habit but he started to battle alcoholism in 2005.

He got sober for a while, that is, until Amanda got him to fall off the wagon in late 2008 (David Hayward paid Amanda to get JR drunk so he could get custody of his grandson, Little Adam).
