James Mitchell came on board to the cast of "All My Children" in 1979 as the scheming business tycoon Palmer Cortlandt. Mitchell received his first Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1980 for his portrayal of Palmer but he lost to Douglass Watson of "Another World." Mitchell starred in the 1955 film, "Oklahoma!".

Palmer and Nina lived at Cortlandt Manor and it had a reputation of being very Gothic. This Gothic theme came into play when Myra (Nina's grandmother and Daisy's mother) resurrected Daisy's spirit at a séance. Elizabeth Lawrence originated the role of Myra Murdoch on "AMC" in 1979.

Nina was acquitted of all charges when everyone learned that Sean Cudahy was the one who killed Sybil.

This has not been mentioned a lot but Palmer briefly dated Leila Mainwater. They broke up and Palmer started to pursue Opal Gardner. Palmer and Opal went into business together in the mid 1990s when they opened up their very own chicken shack.

Palmer met a woman named Loretta Rutherford and gave her a good amount of money to claim she had an affair with Tad. Dixie believed Loretta and divorced Tad. It was on their second wedding day that Tad fought with Billy Clyde Tuggle on a bridge and a bomb went off, killing Billy and leaving Tad presumed dead. Tad turned up alive about two years later in Napa, California.

Erica Kane had entered the room when the Board of Directors for Cortlandt Electronics held a meeting to vote on who would be the permanent CEO between Opal and Palmer. The Board's vote was tied so it was up to Erica, who sat on the Board, to cast the tie breaking vote. Erica had just gotten back from Rio De Janeiro after having cosmetic surgery to fix the scar on her face.

She said that, in the best interest of the company, Palmer should be the permanent CEO and she voted for him. Palmer became the permanent CEO and this caused a rift in Opal and Erica's friendship.

However, a couple of weeks later, Opal forgave Erica.

Natalie and Silver got into a fight and she shot Silver in self defense. Palmer found out about this and told her he would hide her body in a pond on Palmer's estate, Cortlandt Manor. Palmer and Natalie did this but Palmer's niece, Dixie Cooney, swam in the pond, one day, and came upon Silver's corpse. Natalie was never criminally charged for shooting Silver.
