The show decided to take a new approach to their anniversary episodes and aired a documentary style episode where the characters, by themselves, shared their fondest memories of life in Pine Valley. The town had been voted "The Most Genuine Town in America" so they wanted their views as to how it got that honor so who else than to talk to those who lived there. Hayley, who is a talk show host for "Wave", came back to town to produce the documentary.

There were a slew of returns of characters from the show's past but Reggie Montgomery was not one of them who returned. The ones who did make a comeback were: Maria Santos, Brooke English, Bianca Montgomery, Lily Montgomery, Hayley Vaughn Santos, Mateo Santos, Nina Cortlandt Warner, Jack Montgomery, Palmer Cortlandt, and Greg Nelson. Zach and Kendall, who started a long vacation about a week and a half prior to the episode, also made a return for the 40th anniversary episode.

Adam discussed his time in Pine Valley near the beginning of the episode and stated how many people thought it was his rivalry with Palmer which brought him to town. Adam shot down that belief by saying it was actually Erica Kane which got him to come to Pine Valley. Adam discussed how, at the time he arrived, he was a film producer and wanted to make a movie based off of Erica's autobiography, "Raising Kane."

Hayley decided to divide up her documentary into segments and had the first one be about love and marriage in Pine Valley. She commented how some truly did it for love and others not so much and flashed back to when her ex-boyfriend, Brian Bodine, married An Li Chen so she could get a green card.

At the beginning of the segment, Erica managed to name all her ex husbands in order (the order goes like this: Jeff Martin, Phil Brent, Tom Cudahy, Adam Chandler, Mike Roy, Travis Montgomery, Dimitri Marick, Jack Montgomery.

She married Adam, Travis, and Dimitri twice but her unions with Mike and Travis were invalid). However, Adam had a difficult time naming all his ex wives in the proper order (the order goes like this: Althea Chandler, Erica Kane, Brooke English, Dixie Cooney, Natalie Marlowe, Gloria Marsh, Liza Colby, Arlene Vaughn, Krystal Carey, and Annie Novak.

He married Erica twice and Gloria three times but his marriages to Brooke, Dixie, and Natalie were invalid).

Nina appeared near the beginning of the "Love and Marriage in Pine Valley" segment and remarked on how beautiful her first wedding was to Cliff Warner at Cortlandt Manor. She recalled how it was like a fairy tale and all the wonderful memories she had of that day. Opal chimed in and commented how Cliff and Nina's marriage had many bumpy roads but eventually a happy ending.

While the "Love and Marriage in Pine Valley" segment included many happy memories of previous weddings (some wedding pictures included were Cliff and Nina's first wedding, Jesse and Angie's third wedding, Noah and Julia's, Edmund and Maria's, Hayley and Mateo's, and more), some characters discussed being single. One of them happened to be Brot Monroe, who used the terms "set up" to say how, once he was completely settled in to town, he would find his lady. Brot commented how he was sure his right woman was out there so then Natalia appeared, who is Brot's romantic love interest, and said it sounded like there was something wrong if you were not married.

The next segment involved Pine Valley's families and included talk from Maria and Mateo Santos about their life growing up, Annie talking about wanting to provide the best life for her daughter, Emma. Then, we got to Adam who remarked how family meant everything to him. However, Palmer butted in and stated what a rattlesnake Adam was with him "eating his young."

There was a funny segment during the show where they discussed some former residents possibly coming back to town. Since Brooke was on the show, she mentioned how maybe she might return and a certain someone would have to deal with it. This is when we saw Brooke's most famous rival, Erica Kane, remark "Brooke who?" and her insisting she would just ignore Brooke if she returned to town. Sure enough, Brooke came back for a short visit about a month and a half later.

Hayley went on to a more sorrowful note with her documentary with the next segment being "Loss" and showing the Pine Valley residents mourning the loss of loved ones. The characters mentioned in the segment were Julia Santos, Mona Kane, Jenny Gardener, Greenlee Smythe, Babe Carey, Laura Cudahy, Stuart Chandler, and Dixie Cooney.

However, Kate Martin was not shown in the segment and this upset several "AMC" fans since Kate was on the show for its first fifteen years. Kate died back in 1985 when her real life portrayer, Kay Campbell, passed away in real life.

The final character mentioned in the "Loss" segment of the documentary was Julia Santos. First, Mateo spoke about her and how he still missed her and that he treasured all the good times they spent together. The camera then turned to Maria, who said she needed a minute to collect herself as she broke down to where she could not say anything at that time.
