The British "Pop Idol" was produced by Simon Fuller. Simon Cowell was one of the judges. In addition to "American Idol", other successful spin offs such as "Canadian Idol", and "Australian Idol" were created.
2. Which of these characteristics applied to season 1 only?

The number of finalists was increased from ten to twelve after season 1, which aired from June to September of 2002. Starting with season 2, the slightly longer seasons ran from January to May. Also, during season 1, Brian Dunkleman co-hosted the show along with Ryan Seacrest. Dunkleman left the show after it's first season to pursue other career opportunities.
3. Which season featured several strong female contestants, (including the four top finalists) who were often referred to as "the divas"?

Answer: season 3

Fantasia Barrino won the title of "American Idol" for season 3. Diana DeGarmo became her runner-up, followed by Jasmine Trias and La Toya London. Jennifer Hudson, who finished in seventh place was also considered a top contender.

Fantasia was a 19 year old from High Point, North Carolina with a background in gospel singing when she auditioned for the third season of "American Idol". She was very popular with the judges, as well as with the voting audience. Her performances of "Chain Of Fools", "I Believe", and George Gershwin's "Summertime" from "Porgy And Bess" were particularly memorable.

Her first full album is titled "Free Yourself".
