Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Doctor gets a new companion at the start of the "Key to Time" story arc. What is her name?

Answer: Romana

Romanadvoratrelundar is a Time Lady. It is established at the start that she is both smarter and younger (roughly 140 vs his 750) than the Doctor.
Romana was played by Mary Tamm during the "Key to Time" season. Tamm left the role of Romana after one season, but continued acting. She died in June 2012.
Leela was the Fourth Doctor's companion in seasons 14 and 15. Sarah Jane Smith was the companion of both the Third and Fourth Doctors. Tegan was primarily a companion of the Fifth Doctor, but did meet the Fourth Doctor shortly before he regenerated in "Logopolis."
2. In "The Ribos Operation," the first segment of the Key to Time was a large chunk of what valuable mineral?

Answer: Jethrik

Jethrik was a bright blue mineral used to power warp drive engines. It was extremely rare, and extremely powerful, making it quite valuable. Two con artists attempt to sell the planet Ribos to a nobleman by convincing him the planet is loaded with Jethrik.
Voolium showed up in the next episode, "The Pirate Planet." Argonite is a precious mineral in "The Space Pirates" (Season 6). Gold makes multiple appearances over the history of "Doctor Who" and is an excellent weapon against Cybermen.
3. In "The Pirate Planet" the segment turned out to be an entire planet. What was the name of the planet?

Answer: Calufrax

"The Pirate Planet" refers to the planet Zanak, which materializes around other planets and steals their natural resources. Zanak had stolen Calufrax -- according to the Doctor, that wasn't much of a loss, as he called it "cold and boring." The Doctor and Romana stop an evil queen from destroying the Earth before retrieving the second segment.
"The Pirate Planet" was written by Douglas Adams, who gained fame as the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
Chloris is the location of the 17th season episode "The Creature from the Pit." Castrovalva is the site of Peter Davison's first adventure as the Doctor. Kasterborous is the galaxy that Gallifrey, the home planet of the Time Lords, is located in.
4. "The Stones of Blood" naturally focused on a circle of stones. What name was given to the stones?

Answer: The Nine Travellers

In the episode, the stones are called "The Nine Travellers." By the end of the episode, the number has changed, as Vivien Fay (aka Ceassir of Diplos) is imprisoned for stealing the Great Seal of Diplos. The seal turns out to be the third segment of the Key to Time. "The Stones of Blood" was the 100th episode of "Doctor Who" to be aired.
The location shooting was done at the Rollright Stones, a megalithic complex from between 200 and 400 BCE located near Long Compton in Warwickshire.
5. In the "Androids of Tara," Romana is a dead ringer for a royal princess named what?

Answer: Strella

The princess' full title was "Princess Strella, descendant of the Royal Kings of Tara, Mistress of the domains of Thorvald, Mortgarde and Freya." The princess was the pawn in the evil Count Grendel's efforts to usurp the throne. In the end, the Doctor defeats Grendel, saves the princess and true love triumphs. Finding the segment was remarkably easy in this episode; Romana found it in about five minutes.

The rest of the episode is a recreation of "The Prisoner of Zenda" with Mary Tamm doing quadruple duty as Romana, the princess, and their android duplicates.

The episode is quite notable for Tamm's elaborate purple costume, which she designed herself.
6. What type of creature was Kroll in "The Power of Kroll"?

Answer: Squid

Kroll was a giant squid, magnified to huge proportions (roughly two miles wide) when it swallowed a segment of the Key to Time. Seconds before being eaten by the squid, the Doctor is able to convert it using the tracer.
In this episode, the Doctor and Romana are caught in the middle of small civil war between the planet's indigenous population ("swampies") and the staff at a methane extraction plant.
For giant lizards, see "Godzilla". For giant sharks, try "Deep Blue Sea" or most SyFy channel movies.
7. The search for the Key to Time ended with "The Armageddon Factor." The sixth segment turned out to be a princess. Who played the princess?

Answer: Lalla Ward

Lalla Ward, born June 28, 1951, played Princess Astra. Producers liked her so much they cast her as the new Romana when Mary Tamm left. Ward played Romana from "Destiny of the Daleks" to "Warrior's Gate." Ward married co-star Tom Baker in 1980, but they divorced after only 16 months. She married writer Richard Dawkins in 1992 -- they were introduced by "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams. Asteroid 8347 is named after Ward.
8. Once the Doctor had assembled the Key to Time, who attempted to steal it from him?

Answer: The Black Guardian

The Black Guardian, disguising himself as the White Guardian, attempts to get the Doctor to turn over the key. It was the Guardian's lack of concern for Astra that led the Doctor to believe he was being tricked. The Doctor scatters the segments across time, and returns Astra to her human form.
9. What exact shape did the Key to Time take in its completed form?

Answer: cube

The "Key to Time" was a crystalline cube, about a square foot on each side. The Key gave the person who possessed it the power to control all of time and space. It was determined nobody should have that much power, and the Key was divided and spread across the universe. During the Fourth Doctor's quest, he found it in the following places:
1) A lump of Jethrik, a valuable fuel source
2) The planet Calufrax
3) The Great Seal of Diplos, which has powers over time and space
4) A dragon statue on the planet Tara
5) A swamp creature named Kroll
6) The Princess Astra
10. The Doctor's other companion during the quest was K-9 Mark II, his robotic dog. In which episode did K-9 play almost no part?

Answer: The Power of Kroll

K-9 appeared very briefly in "The Power of Kroll" because the TARDIS was stuck in the middle of a swamp. In most of the other adventures, K-9 proved himself to be a very valuable ally. In "The Ribos Operation" K-9 helps the Doctor, Romana, and Garron to escape from the Graff's quarters and go to the Catacombs.

In "Stones of Blood," K-9 helps the Doctor repel the attacking stones. And in "The Androids of Tara," K-9 helps the Doctor breach the castle and fight the androids. John Leeson provided the voice for K-9, who was with the Fourth Doctor from 1977 to 1981.

The mechanical dog is one of the most popular characters in the entire "Doctor Who" universe, and was part of the "Sarah Jane Adventures" spin-off.
