Cuffey and a couple of other slaves had been forced to get horses ready for Justin, his man and Madeline to take with them back to Resolute. Justin then threw a lantern on the cotton barn's roof, causing it to catch on fire. During the chaos, Mrs. Main was injured and carried away to safety by Cuffey.
