Kris had plans of the prison, including the old hanging cell. She worked out that the tunnel beyond the hanging cell came out just beyond the prison's perimeter wall. She let on to Yvonne about her escape route because she needed someone to unlock the grate blocking the exit and thought that Yvonne could get someone to do that. Yvonne was first to try out the escape route, unfortunately getting trapped by Fenner.
