Rachel Hicks is imprisoned for possessing ecstasy with intent to supply. From the very beginning, her introversion makes her a target for bullying by the other inmates. She has an affair with officer Jim Fenner, which causes trouble among some of the inmates, particularly Shell Dockley. Rachel is dealt another blow when she discovers that her mother has put her baby into care. After Shell pours boiling tea onto her and gives her a picture of Rachel with a threat on her life, poor Rachel has had enough and hangs herself in her cell.

Rachel is played by Joanne Froggatt.

Zandra was sentenced to ten months for credit card fraud, after taking the blame for her boyfriend Robin, who mercilessly abandoned her despite this. She has their baby, Robbie, while in prison, but Robin still wants nothing to do with her. Unfortunately, she could not kick her drug habit and the baby is taken from her. She finds close friends while in prison, but soon is stricken by severe headaches, revealed to be caused by an inoperable brain tumor. She dies during a party in Season 2.

Michelle "Shell" Dockley is imprisoned for murder and torture. She is a drug dealer and a bully to other inmates. She and Fenner begin an affair, with Shell eventually revealing all to Fenner's wife via a mobile phone she had smuggled into the prison. Later, Fenner enters a relationship with governor Karen Betts, much to Shell's displeasure; however, during a party in the prison, he and Karen fall out and he seeks solace with Shell, who stabs him in the stomach with a broken bottle, and keeps him locked in her cell. He survives the ordeal, but naturally their affair is now over!

Shell is played by Debra Stephenson.

Maxi is the leader of the Peckham Boot Gang, and is in prison for ABH and handling of stolen goods; Tina is her sister, a sweet woman whose low confidence got her involved in Maxi's criminal ways. The other member is Glaswegian Al, who joined the gang after escaping her abusive father in her hometown of Glasgow.

Tina befriends another prisoner, Virginia, who is wheelchair bound, making her sister Maxi angry. Eventually it is revealed that Virginia is faking her disability, and she ends up drowned in the bath by Al. Tina changes her surname to O'Kane in Virginia's honor.

Maxi eventually commits suicide. In a later season, Al is poisoned. Tina comes out of her shell, and eventually becomes so institutionalized that she continues to reoffend to be arrested again.

Maxi is played by Kerry Norton, Al by Pauline Campbell, and Tina by Victoria Bush.

However, Neil falls in love with him, and accuses Fenner of homophobia when he rejects his advances.

He and fellow officer Di Barker get married, to provide her with the companionship she craves and to act as a cover for Neil's sexuality; when they split, Neil uses the opportunity to come out. He later dies in his office when an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease strikes the prison.

She convinces her fellow inmates that she is a Hollywood actress; however, she is actually a pornstar, which is discovered by Yvonne Atkins, whose son Ritchie is probably the only person Snowball cares about.

Her attempt to escape by setting a bomb in the prison makes her the most hated inmate after Shaz Wiley dies in the event and Barbara Hunt loses her hearing. Snowball has her hair set aflame by the other inmates, and makes various other escape attempts, one ending in her shooting and paralyzing Ritchie. The couple make a suicide pact, but Snowball cannot swallow the pills, and so survives while Ritchie dies. She finally commits suicide by hanging herself in front of all the inmates.

Snowball is played by Nicole Faraday, and Yvonne by Linda Henry.

Tina O'Kane becomes the third Julie, dyeing her hair blonde.

After finding a lump in her breast, she gets extremely distressed from what she has read online, and reluctantly goes to the prison doctor; she is eventually diagnosed with breast cancer. She goes into remission, but is adamant that she will refuse treatment if her cancer returns, which Julie J opposes but respects.

Julie S is played by Vicky Alcock, and Julie J by Kika Mirylees.

As everyone becomes ill, the doctor believes it is a viral infection, until Al dies; investigations then reveal that the poisoning is caused by oxalic acid, present in rhubarb leaves. Natalie works with Bev and Phyl to frame the glamorous inmate Tanya Turner, and spike Governor Myers's coffee with the tainted milk; Tanya is arrested for the murder. She is exonerated when the rhubarb wine is discovered.

Bev is played by Amanda Barrie, Phyl by Stephanie Beacham, and Tanya by Zoe Lucker.

Pat is furious, and reveals that Natalie is a child abuser.

Later, Natalie is told by the Julies of Pat's escape plan, which comprises hiding in a rubbish bag that will be collected and taken away. Natalie hijacks it for herself, unknowing that it is a set-up by Pat. As Pat ambushes her, the two women have a fight, resulting in Pat bashing Natalie's head with a brick, killing her.

Natalie is played by Dannielle Brent, and Pat by Liz May Brice.

Entrepreneur Catherine Earlham arrives in the prison, and tells Darlene that her husband Frank is planning to lie in court and frame her for his own crime of stealing from pension funds. When Frank visits, Catherine begins to scream and makes out Frank is hurting her, prompting Darlene to jump to her defense and choke Frank to death. Now free to go, Catherine reveals her true colors. Darlene is devastated and douses herself in white spirit and sets herself alight. She survives her ordeal.
