Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alvin, Simon and Theodore, all chipmunks
Answer: Dave Seville
In the animated TV series "Alvin & the Chipmunks", that ran from 1983-90, Alvin, Simon and their human Dave were all voiced by Ross Bagdasarian Jr, while Theodore's voice was provided by Janice Karman. The three chipmunk brothers not only talked, but were talented singers as well, having made their first record for Ross Bagdasarian Sr. (as David Seville) in 1958. Television specials, the series and films have all followed.
2. Arnold, a pig
Answer: Fred Ziffel
In "Green Acres" (1965-71), Fred and Doris Ziffel treated Arnold the Piggy like a son. He had the run of the house, and the thought of turning him into breakfast was not to be mentioned. He usually sported some sort of clothing, and did everything but speak.
3. Bimbo, a baby elephant
Answer: Corky
The actor who played Corky, the "Circus Boy" in the series of that name (1956-58) was billed as Mickey Braddock, but is perhaps better known as Mickey Dolenz of "The Monkees" (1966-68). "Circus Boy" was a great series to watch for a kid, telling as it did stories about the adventures of orphan Corky with his adoptive father (Joey the clown) and pet elephant Bimbo in an exciting circus setting. (I speak from experience; it was one of my favourite shows.)
4. Clarence, a cross-eyed lion
Answer: Dr Marsh Tracy
The series "Daktari" (1966-69) followed on from the movie "Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion" (1965) and was set in Africa. Clarence was part of the family of Dr Marsh Tracy (Marshall Thompson), a veterinarian ministering to the local wildlife. Cheryl Miller played Paula Tracy, the doctor's daughter, in both film and series.
5. Flipper, a dolphin
Answer: Sandy and Bud Ricks
Sandy and Bud and their father, Ranger Porter Ricks, lived in Coral Key Park, Florida and had weekly adventures with the title character of "Flipper" (1964-67) a very intelligent dolphin. Luke Halpin and Tommy Norden played the boys, and their father was played by Brian Kelly.
6. Fred, a cockatoo
Answer: Tony Baretta
Robert Blake played the title character of "Baretta" (1975-78), a tough city detective who often worked undercover. Though a bird might seem a strange pet for such a tough guy, Fred was no pushover and would shout "Freeze!" when Tony entered their living quarters. He was also able to answer the telephone!
7. Marcel, a monkey
Answer: Ross Geller
Ross introduced the other "Friends" (1994-2004) to Marcel in the first season episode "The One with the Monkey", having acquired the pet to help with his loneliness. Marcel had a number of adventures with the gang, and was last seen in 1996, in the two-part episode "The One After the Superbowl", having become something of a movie star after being given up to a zoo by Ross.
8. Mister Ed, a horse
Answer: Wilbur Post
The most unusual thing about the star of "Mister Ed" (1958-66), of course, was that he was a talking horse! Unfortunately for Wilbur (Alan Young), Mister Ed would only talk to him, leading others to question Wilbur's sanity. In fact, Mister Ed got up to lots of mischief for which poor Wilbur had to take the blame, all the while being accused by his wife of loving the horse more than he loved her.
9. Rocket J. Squirrel, a squirrel
Answer: Bullwinkle J. Moose
The cartoon series "Rocky and His Friends" (1959-64) featured the adventures of Rocket J. "Rocky" Squirrel and his friend Bullwinkle, who was not the brightest of animals. June Foray and Bill Scott provided the voices of Rocky and Bullwinkle, respectively. (Though this wasn't a traditional pet/owner duo, it seemed appropriate to include at least one squirrel in this quiz, given its title.)
10. Skippy, a kangaroo
Answer: Sonny Hammond
The Australian series "Skippy" (1968-70), about a boy and his kangaroo, proved to be so popular that it was available to be viewed on satellite TV in Spain in the 1990s! (source: personal experience) Garry Pankhurst played Sonny, whose father Matt Hammond (Ed Devereaux) was a park ranger at Waratah National Park. Skippy was a very clever little kangaroo, who got Sonny and others out of scrapes all the time, in much the same manner as a famous collie in another television series.
