Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Mr. and Mrs. Pogle and their family live?

Answer: In a tree

"Pogles' Wood" is the story of woodland folk who lived "deep in the middle of a wood" in a tree.
2. The first series of "Pogles' Wood" included a character that was dropped from subsequent series because it was deemed too scary for child viewers. What character was this?

Answer: A witch

Initial episodes centred around a hook-nosed witch. However after broadcasting the series just once it was never shown again. The producers were asked by the B.B.C. to concentrate on exploring and explaining countryside habitat more.
3. Mr. and Mrs. Pogle had a child live with them. What was the child's name?

Answer: Pippin

Pippin was the sort of boy that usually got into a scrape. He might push his wheelbarrow too fast over bumps and lose a wheel, or perhaps build some stilts but get stuck on them in a stream.
4. The child that lived with Mr. and Mrs. Pogle had a little furry friend who was a rabbit-like creature. What was his name?

Answer: Tog

Tog was a strange creature. He seems to be half rabbit and half squirrel. It didn't help that he had a speech defect too. Example, "oim gluck" means "I'm stuck" in Tog language.
There is a learned train of thought that suggests that he was once a stuffed toy brought to life by magic powers to battle the evil witch but sources remain unreliable on this point!
5. The child that lived with Mr. and Mrs. Pogle was not, contrary to popular belief, in fact their son. What was he?

Answer: He was the son of the King of the Fairies

It was never explained quite why Amos and Edna Pogle came to be looking after the son of the King of the Fairies. These sorts of things don't happen to everybody and it seems sad to remain a mystery forty years on.
6. "Pogles' Wood" was filmed by Smallfilms which was owned by Peter Firmin. The location for its creation was somewhat unusual. Where was this series filmed?

Answer: Peter Firmin's Barn

Other programmes form the same stable (pun intended) that were also filmed in Mr. Firmin's barn were "The Clangers", "Bagpuss", "Noggin the Nog" and "Ivor the Engine".
7. What was the magic feature in the Pogles' front garden?

Answer: A magic plant

There is professional dispute as to whether this magic plant was in fact a bean plant or a rose plant. Nevertheless an infusion of bilberry wine by Edna Pogle would cause the plant to start narrating stories and even, on occasions, to start playing the violin.
8. Mrs. Pogle was very fond of making a certain type of wine. What sort of wine was it?

Answer: Bilberry wine

It was Mrs. Pogle's bilberry wine that was used to prompt the magic plant to start narrating a story.
9. The furry rabbit-like creature also had a little spiky friend. Who was this?

Answer: Master Hedgepig the hedgehog

Master Hedgepig would often scramble through the woods until he gets to the Pogles' doorbell which he would pull to give them an early morning call and so set off the day's adventure.
10. "Pogles' Wood" was a programme made using small models and stop-frame animation techniques. Each model character had several heads that were used to create different facial expressions. How many heads did each character have?

Answer: Three

Each model had just three heads and even then only the mouth and eyebrows were different. Simple features were formed like the yellow smiley faces we know so well today.
