Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Robert Vaughn played the male lead as what character?

Answer: Harry Rule

Robert Vaughn played Harry Rule very much in the style of his other suave, sophisticated portrayal of Napoleon Solo in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.".
2. Who played his wealthy female sidekick, Contessa Caroline di Contini in the series?

Answer: Nyree Dawn Porter

Nyree Dawn Porter was New Zealand born. Nyree was the phonetic spelling of her birth name "Ngaire".
Apart from "The Protectors" she is perhaps best known for her work in "The Forsyte Saga".
She died in 2001 as a result of complications after foot surgery.
Diana Rigg starred in "The Avengers".
Annette Andre starred in "Randall and Hopkirk (deceased)".
Alexandra Bastedo starred in "The Champions".
3. The theme tune to the series was a Tony Christie song; which one?

Answer: Avenue and Alleyways

This lively track only hit 37 in the British charts when first released in 1973. When re-issued in 2005, following his success with Peter Kaye in the charity release of "Is This the Way to Amarillo", it reached 26.
4. The series was produced by Gerry Anderson. What makes this series unique?

Answer: It was the only non-fantasy or sci-fi released programme produced by Anderson

Gerry Anderson started his T.V. career in 1957 when he produced "The Adventures of Twizzle". He went on to make an assortment of sci-fi based programmes most notably "Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet", "Stingray" and "Fireball XL5" in which he introduced the concept of "Supermarionation" - string puppets for t.v.
His equally successful forays into the world of live actor t.v. were all of the fantasy or sci-fi genre. e.g. "U.F.O", "The Invaders" and "Doppelganger".
5. Robert Vaughn insists that he detested the series, calling it "tasteless junk". He claims that he didn't understand the plots before, during or after filming. He was at odds with Gerry Anderson and Lew Grade over the show. What reaction do you think they made as a response?

Answer: They allowed him to produce one episode himself

Robert Vaughn was deemed to be behaving like a Hollywood prima donna. The production team resented this and so gave him an opportunity to produce episode #23, "It Could be Practically Anywhere on the Island". Vaughn wrote out the other co-stars and featured just himself as the hero. Lew Grade declared it "the worst episode of anything I've ever seen".
6. What vehicle did Robert Vaughn drive in the show?

Answer: Jenson Interceptor

The Volvo P1800S was driven by "The Saint".
The Lotus Super Seven was driven by "The Prisoner".
A Rolls Royce was driven by co-star Nyree Dawn Porter.
The Jensen Interceptor was the sports car of the day in Britain. 6,500 were built by Jenson Motors.
They featured heavily in adventure t.v. of the day. Ian Ogilvy occasionally drove one in "Return of the Saint", Peter Wyngarde drove one as "Jason King" and more recently Inspector Lynley drives one in the "Inspector Lynley Mysteries".
7. "The Protectors" were a team of international private detectives and trouble shooters. How many "Protectors" were there?

Answer: Three

There were three; Harry Rule - Robert Vaughn;
Contessa Caroline di Contini - Nyee Dawn Porter; and Paul Buchet - Tony Anholt.
8. Who was "Gus" in the series?

Answer: He was Harry's dog

Gus was Harry's Irish Wolfhound and appeared in 26 of the 52 episodes. Quite how a single man like Harry Rule could jet set around Europe at a time when severe quaranteen rules were in force to prevent rabies flourishing remains a mystery.
9. The character Paul Buchet in "The Protectors" was orignally scripted as a German bohemian hippy. However this was changed to an industrial spy from which European country?

Answer: France

Paul Buchet was originally intended to be Kurt Neilson from Germany. Quite why this was changed prior to production is not explained.
10. "The Protectors" was renowned for first class guest star appearances in many episodes. Which of these actors did NOT appear as a guest star?

Answer: Julie Andrews

Patrick Troughton (second Dr Who) played Bela Karoleon in episode "Brother Hood".
Stephanie Beacham played Christie in "Your Witness".
Anton Rogers played Alan Sutherland in episode "King Con".
