The opening episode takes place about three months after Buffy's death. Willow decorates the house using magic which causes the first argument between Willow and Tara about how much magic Willow is using. In this episode a demon has been summoned to Sunnydale and it is causing everyone to burst into song. The demon kidnaps Dawn, thinking it was her who summoned him, and wants to take her back to his dimension to make her his queen. Buffy goes to rescue Dawn, and while singing, reveals to the gang that she was in heaven.

The demon then finds out that it was actually Xander that summoned him and leaves Sunnydale. Spike and Buffy kiss at the end of this episode.

This causes another argument between her and Tara, who think that Willow is using magic for all the wrong reasons. She then does a spell to make Buffy and Tara forget but it goes wrong and the gang, including Spike, collapse.

When they awake they can't remember who they are. Xander, Willow, Tara and Dawn escape from a demon attack into the sewers where they are cornered by a vampire, while fighting Xander steps on Willow's crystal and the spell is broken. Tara realises what has happened and leaves Willow. Giles also leaves in this episode, as he feel Buffy is relying on him too much.

In this episode Willow realises that she can de-rat Amy. Once Amy adjusts the pair head of to the Bronze for a magic fest. Warren, Andrew and Jonathan break into the museum and steal a diamond. While they are there they are interrupted by Rusty and they use a ray gun to freeze Rusty solid. Buffy and Spike fight at the end of this episode, then they kiss and they end up wrecking an old house when they have a moment of passion.

In this episode Buffy is feeling the pain from her night with Spike. She tells him that is won't happen again but he is not convinced. After her night at the Bronze with Amy, Willow is all magicked out and can't perform spells so Amy suggests they go and see a warlock, Rack, who deals in black magic. Willow promises Dawn a night out but takes her to Rack's instead. Once they leave Willow is high on magic and they discover a demon that Willow raised with her magics following them.

They try to escape in a stolen car but Willow is too high and tries to drive the car using magic but it crashes, injuring Dawn. Buffy and Spike arrive and Willow kills the demon using magic. Dawn gets angry and slaps Willow who breaks down to Buffy admitting she is addicted to magic.

In this episode Buffy cuts her own hair and has to visit the hairdressers. As she is leaving she is accidentally hit with The Trio's invisibility gun. Seeing as she in invisible, she decides to have some fun. She visits Spike for some passion, then visits Mrs Kroger and makes her think she is mad and gets her suspended from her job.

The others, meanwhile, discover that if Buffy doesn't get cured soon, she will turn to mush and try and find a way to help her. Willow finds The Trio's layer and they kidnap her.

They phone Buffy to come and collect her saying that they will make her visible again but Willow notices they have the gun on the wrong setting and that Warren is going to kill Buffy. Buffy manages to defeat the invisible three and Willow makes them visible again. Buffy finally sees the people who have been annoying her for months. Buffy asks Willow how she found them and Willow tells her she done it the spell-free way.

This episode sees Buffy take a job at a fast food restaurant to earn money for her and Dawn. When she discovers that employees are disappearing Buffy is convinced humans are the secret ingredient in the burgers. She tries to tell the customers this and gets fired. Buffy goes back to investigate and discovers Wig Lady, a regular customer is a demon who paralyzes people with a mist then eats them.

She paralyzes Buffy, but Willow shows up just in time and saves her. Willow tells Buffy that the Doublemeat burgers are made out of vegetable and Buffy uses this knowledge to get her job back. Willow tells Amy that she better stay away from her.

In this episode Warren does a spell to make his e-girlfriend his slave but the spell goes wrong and he kills her. He then comes up with the idea of making Buffy believe she did it. Buffy wants to hand herself in, but Spike dumps the body. Buffy goes to the police station, but when she hears the girl was Katrina, she realises that Warren set her up. Tara tells Buffy that she didn't come back wrong, and that there is nothing different about her, but Buffy breaks down and admits to Tara that she has been sleeping with Spike.

This episode sees Buffy celebrating her 21st birthday. Everyone gathers at the house including Clem, Spike's demon friend, Sophie, a girl Buffy works with and Richard, a friend of Xander's. When they all find that they can't leave the house the start to panic, especially when they discover there is a demon in the house with them. Buffy defeats the demon and Anya realises that Dawn made a wish to her vengeance demon friend, Halfrek. Anya summons Hallie who refuses to break the spell until she realises that she is stuck in the house as well.

The spell is lifted and everyone goes, leaving Buffy to deal with Dawn. Halfrek is played by the same actress who played Cecily in season five's "Fool For Love". Halfrek recognizes Spike but calls him William, so maybe it is Cecily and she became a vengeance demon.

Riley Finn returns to Sunnydale in this episode, but he is now married to fellow soldier Sam. They are tracking the Suvolte demon and ask for Buffy's help. The demon's eggs start killing as soon as they are hatched and can be sold for a lot of money on the black market. Riley tells Buffy that he is looking for a dealer called the Doctor who he believes is in Sunnydale. Riley catches Buffy in bed with Spike and reveals to Buffy that Spike is The Doctor.

When Riley leaves Buffy goes to see Spike and tells him that she can't see him anymore.

This episode sees Xander and Anya getting ready for their wedding. An old man approaches Xander and tells him he is Xander from the future and that Xander shouldn't got through with the wedding. He takes Xander in to the future to show him what his life will be like with Anya. Xander thinks he can't have his life turn out that way, and even when Anya reveals that the man is someone Anya cursed in her demon days and not future Xander, Xander realises that he is not ready for marriage and leaves Anya at the alter.

In this episode Buffy gets injected with the serum of a demon which makes her hallucinate that she is in an asylum and Sunnydale and her friends are not real. She flashes back and forth from the delusions. In her illusions she has to make a choice of being the slayer and Sunnydale or returning to normal and being with both her parents.

She thinks the only thing keeping her in Sunnydale is her friends so she lures them to the basement and ties them up with the plan of setting a demon lose on them.

In the end she realises what is real and lets her friends go. Willow mixes up a potion that will stop the hallucinations.

Anya returns in this episode and she is a vengeance demon again. She tries to get The Scoobies to make a wish against Xander as she can't hurt him herself. When this doesn't work she has a heart to heart with Spike and the two of them end up sleeping together at The Magic Box, unaware that Buffy, Willow, Xander and Dawn can see them with the cameras The Trio planted there.

When Xander confronts them, Spike tells the group about him and Buffy. Tara and Willow get back together at the end of this episode.

She chases Warren through the woods where she ties him to a tree and after pushing a bullet into his chest and sewing his mouth shut, she flays him alive. This episode sees Willow go after Jonathan and Andrew. Buffy, Xander and Anya help them escape and take them to The Magic Box. Dawn has been left with Clem but she persuades him to help her look for Willow. She goes to Rack's place to see if he knows where Willow is but finds him dead, sucked of all his magics.

As dawn tries to leave she comes face to face with Willow. Willow threatens to turn Dawn back into the green energy she was but Buffy shows up and tries to talk to Willow. Willow teleports them all back to The Magic Box. Buffy and Willow fight while Xander helps Jonathan, Andrew and Dawn escape. Willow is just about to do some more damage to Buffy when a light hits her, knocking her to the ground.

At the end of this episode, we see Spike has done all the tests set to him by the demon. You are made to think that the demon will remove Spike's chip but instead he gives Spike back his soul. Also, in this episode, Willow and Giles fight and Willow takes the magic that Giles was given by the coven.

This causes Willow to hear all the pain in the world and she decides the only way to end it is to destroy the world. Willow starts to release a temple from the ground and it's only Xander that can stop her by telling her he loves her. We see Willow's power gradually fading and her hair returns to red as she falls to the ground being held by Xander.
