Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Golden Parachute"- In this series premiere, we met returning CSI Megan Donner. Why had Megan taken time off?

Answer: her husband had been killed

Both Tim Speedle (Speed most often times) and Horatio Caine welcomed Megan back from her leave of absence. In this episode, the CSIs dealt with a swamp land plane crash, of which one victim was found five miles from the debris scene. Horatio and Megan discussed another infamous Miami area crash, 1996's ValuJet disaster. ValuJet went on to be known as AirTran Airways.

While Megan had been away, Horatio had taken over her position as head of the team. Speedle had to explain to Eric Delko about Megan taking the six months off for her husband's death. Actress Kim Delaney left "CSI Miami" without much explanation after appearing in only ten episodes. She rejoined "NYPD Blue", reprising her role as Diane Russell, for a total of five episodes in 2003.
2. "Losing Face"- In this season one episode, we learned that Horatio used to be in which specialized unit?

Answer: bomb squad

In this episode, a former bomb squad member was back for revenge. Conor O'Farrell played Charlie Berenger, a bomb specialist now working customs. He crafted these bomb necklaces, but the victims seemed too random. Horatio figured out the bomber's target was the bomb squad itself. Charlie was found with his own necklace bomb, to which Horatio disabled with a toothpick.
Horatio's brother Raymond was an undercover narcotics cop, until he was killed in the line of duty. His death occurred in a time frame prior to the series' beginning.
3. In "Just One Kiss", we learn of Horatio's connection to a "Kennedy-esque" family. Horatio was a young CSI when he helped Drake. What was this prominent family's last name?

Answer: Hamilton

As a new CSI, Horatio worked on the case of Drake Hamilton's car accident. In that accident, Drake's girlfriend was killed. All these years later, it is Drake's son and nephew who are suspected in the death of a young woman on their beach front property. Though both Tyler and Paul were suspects, it turned out the Drake killed his son's girlfriend, after Paul (the nephew) raped her. Horatio's fears are pretty much confirmed, he knew he'd helped a killer get away all those years ago, due to his lack of experience. Kevin Kilner played Drake Hamilton.

Some fans of "Earth: Final Conflict" may remember him as William Boone.
4. "Slaughterhouse"- Episode eight was a memorable season one tale, which started off with a bloodied toddler walking down a neighborhood in Miami. The CSIs were working another case, when Horatio began the search for her home. The little girl's entire family was found shot inside her home, but who turned out to be their assailant?

Answer: the father

It was a smart set up by the family's patriarch. He and his wife had a teenaged son, a pre-teen son, the little girl toddler, and a baby boy. The wife was overwhelmed with depression, and on medication. The meds were found inside the home, but little had been taken.

The house was a disaster area, typical of a care taker who's depressed. All of the family members had been shot with a shotgun, except for the toddler. She had blood from her two brothers on her, but she was fine. The gun cabinet inside the garage had the wife's fingerprints on it, and her death was made to seem like a self inflicted wound. It turned out that the father was the parent who'd had enough. Though the man spent little time at home and dealing with any of the problems, he was tired of his wife's phone calls of complaint.

Their teenaged son had shouldered the main brunt of taking care of the family, and had an ulcer to prove it. The husband called his wife and asked her to check the gun cabinet, he claimed he believed it was left unlocked. That event left her finger print on the gun cabinet.

Then he came home, called her from his cellphone inside the garage, and went in with a shotgun in hand. The teenage son tried to save both his sister and the baby boy. He died shielding the baby.
5. "Dead Woman Walking" was another unique story from the first season. The woman in question, Belle King, was a personal injury style attorney specializing in environmental law. What unique style of poisoning had truncated her life span?

Answer: ingested radiation

Belle had been investigating a company, which she has also filed suit against, and had befriended an employee. That employee took some pictures for her, that would help her case, but he became homicidal when he realized she was using him. So, he stole some syringes containing the Iodine 131 isotope. He injected this directly into her orange juice container, and she drank it. Horatio had the sad task of explaining to her that her levels were "roughly equivalent to what four patients undergoing radiation treatment ingest in a six-month period." Belle had one week to live.

Apple seeds do contain sugar cyanide, which metabolize into the deadly hydrogen cyanide. It would take an enormous level of apple seeds to create a toxic event, as our bodies can normally handle small doses of the seed's cyanide content. Even if you ate five apples and all their seeds a day, it would prove harmless.
6. "Dispo Day"- It's time for Miami's finest to burn their narcotics evidence, but their motorcade was broken up. Whose gun misfired, almost costing them their life?

Answer: Tim Speedle

Speed's gun locked up, as he hadn't kept it clean. Fortunately, his Kevlar vest saved his life, and he lived to see another day. Calleigh kept the information to herself, temporarily, to make sure she had time to warn Speed of the findings. He told her he wanted to tell Horatio himself. But, when it came down to it, he chickened out. Horatio already knew the issue with Speed's gun, and gave him a gun cleaning kit as a "belated birthday present". We never know if Horatio's knowledge was intuitive, or if Calleigh told him.
Rory Cochran played Tim Speedle.
7. "Double Cap"- Here we met Calleigh's father, Duke, for the first time. What sad information did we learn about Duke?

Answer: he's a heavy drinker

Our favorite ballistics expert was pulled away from the case of the woman murdered at a local hotel's poolside. She got a call from the Whiskey Stop bartender Dana, twice in this episode, to retrieve her drunken father. Calleigh handled the task stoically, but we could see the signs of resentment in her demeanor.
John Heard played Calleigh's father, Kenwall 'Duke' Duquesne, in seasons one through three.
8. "Tinder Box"- The CSIs had to investigate a night club fire in this episode, which killed close to twenty people. Which two CSIs were at the club when the fire began?

Answer: Tim and Eric

Tim Speedle and Eric Delko were at the club to have some fun. Eric had met a lady named Connie Wilkes, and it looked like the two might leave together. Unfortunately, Connie was killed in the fire. She inhaled super heated air, collapsed and was trampled by panicked patrons. The culprit turned out to be the bouncer. He'd applied to be a firefighter several times, but was always denied. So, he started his own fire, to play hero, hoping it would gain him positive attention. Though he never intended for anyone to be hurt, the fire caused him to murder the bartender (who saw what he'd done) and almost twenty others died due to chained exit doors.
Ben Browder played fire starter Danny Maxwell and Jaclyn Guitterez played Connie Wilkes.
Alexx is the medical examiner, not a CSI, and a specific clue made it clear I was asking for two people, so "all" couldn't have been correct.
9. "Body Count"- In the season one finale, four men escaped from the Dade County detention facility. Which of these inmates was after CSI Calleigh Duquesne?

Answer: Hank Kerner

Hank escaped to kill off all the people who could get him convicted. He and Stewart Otis used inmate Randall Kaye to organize an escape via helicopter. Then, Hank killed both Randell and his brother, who was the chopper pilot. Hank also killed a lady driving an SUV, so he could have transportation. He left Stewart behind, as Stewart had his own plan. We met Stewart in the season one episode "Broken". He played the man who would dress up like an employee, and lie in wait for children to kidnap. He killed Ruthie Crighton in that episode, and Horatio nailed him. In this episode, he was after Randall Kaye's daughter Emma and her cousin Robyn.
Horatio saved both Emma and Robyn from Stewart, and Calleigh risked her own life to get Hank. Hank had managed to kill the state's attorney on his case, and was after Calleigh. Calleigh traced the gun lubricant he used to a single store in Miami, and Hank was there when she arrived. She tricked him with the security mirrors, snuck up behind him, and held her gun to his temple. A shot in the temple was his trade mark kill. Joe was not one of the escapees, and John was Calleigh's detective pal.
Former stuntman Geoff Meed played Hank. He's guest starred on "Charmed", "Judging Amy", "Criminal Minds", ER", "The Shield", "Port Charles", and on "Buffy" as the not-so-anointed Andrew Borba. He's also set to have a small role in third "Resident Evil" installment, due out in 2007.
10. "Body Count"- Which escapee in this season finale was the child predator we saw in "Broken"?

Answer: Stewart Otis

Stewart kindapped and killed little Ruthie Crighton inside of Zany Town in episode six. His M.O. was to take a little girl, cut her hair and change her clothes, and then walk her out of the location in which he'd found her. In "Broken", he used a drug on her that was misted into cotton candy. This drug interacted with cold medicine she was already taking, and she went into shock. He did do CPR to try and save her, but that was for his sake and not her own. She died inside the bathroom, and he snuck out the back. When Horatio went into one of his addresses, he found a closet full of fake uniforms to locations where kids frequent. Then, sadly, the team found a bunch of buried kids in his yard.

In this season one finale, Stewart broke out of jail while waiting for trial. He used his frined, child predator Simon Bishop, to get an RV. Horatio followed a leak in the RV to its location. Inside, he found a video of Emma Kaye, but no people. The team followed footprints to Emma's burial site, but she was not covered and still alive. Her interview resulted in the news that her cousin Robyn was next. They found Stewart and Robyn on a field trip to an aquarium. Horatio shot Stewart, who begged for Horatio to allow him to fall several stories to his death. Horatio refused to let him go, and Stewart promised he'd be back.

William O'Leary played all of the characters listed as choices, and D. B. Sweeney played Simon Bishop.

The world of "CSI" funfact: Actress Aisha Tyler played the dead body of state attorney Janet Medrano in this episode. She went to to play CSI Mia Dickerson on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" for twelve episode of season five. Then she played the business partner, Andrea Moreno, of Melinda Gordon on season one of "Ghost Whisperer".
