Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Survivor's" first season in Borneo is a classic season for many reasons. One particularly famous moment came during the final tribal council when which juror accused Kelly of being a rat during her jury speech?

Answer: Sue

Early on in the game, Sue, Kelly, Rudy and Richard had formed a four person alliance which they vowed to make the final four. Although that did happen, Kelly had contemplated flipping alliances when she discovered she was on the bottom of that four. This particularly angered Sue. Furthermore, Kelly had won immunity at the final four forcing the others to turn on each other. The initial vote was a 2-2 tie between Sue and Richard. On the revote, Kelly switched her vote and Sue was eliminated.

Sue became a member of the jury and at the final tribal council between Kelly and Richard, Sue infamously declared that Richard was the snake and Kelly was the rat. She then said that the game should turn out like nature where the snake eats the rat. Sue cast her vote for Richard to win and he did 4-3.
2. Survivor's first medical evacuation happened in "Australian Outback" when Michael Skupin had to be evacuated on Day 17 after what happened?

Answer: He fell into the fire

Michael was more or less the leader of the Kucha tribe at the time. While tended to the fire, wind blew the smoke into Michael's face, causing him to momentarily pass out. He fell into the fire and badly burnt his hands. A helicopter brought in the medical crew who determined his injuries were too serious and pulled him from the game.

His evacuation was crucial to the game because his removal evened up the tribe number 5 to 5.
3. One of the most controversial moments in "Survivor" history occurred at the final four in "Marquesas". The initial vote was a deadlock tie with two votes each for Kathy and Neleh. How was this tie breaker solved?

Answer: By drawing rocks

For the second and third seasons, ties were settled by counting previous votes received by those in the tie and the person having the most would be eliminated. That tie breaker was removed for the fourth season "Marquesas". (It would have been moot anyway because Kathy and Neleh had the same amount of previous votes). The new tiebreaker was a random rock draw. The rules were that the player with immunity (Vecepia) was safe from the rocks and the players involved in the tie (Kathy and Neleh) would also be safe. However, this was deemed unfair to the remaining player (Pascal) as he would have automatically been eliminated. Instead, Kathy and Neleh were also forced to pick a rock. Pascal picked the purple rock which eliminated him.

This was deemed controversial as Pascal was not in the tie. Years later, host Jeff Probst admitted this was an incorrect use of the rock tiebreaker. The producers did not anticipate that it would be impractical to use at the final four. Afterward, the fire making challenge became the final four tiebreaker while the rocks remained for all other ties.
4. One controversial moment occurred in "Pearl Islands" when the first six players to be voted off came back to fight for a chance to return to the game. What were these players called?

Answer: Outcasts

The first players to be voted out of "Pearl Islands" fought against the remaining players for a chance to come back into the game. They were called the Outcasts, in keeping with the season's pirate theme. The Outcasts wound up winning the challenge, defeating both the Drake and Morgan tribes. Both Drake and Morgan would have to vote out one member who would each be replaced by an Outcast. (Morgan did not vote because Osten quit.)

Fans and players deemed this to be a controversial decision because many believed once you were voted out, you were done.
5. In which season did one tribe "conquer" the other tribe by winning every immunity challenge until the other tribe was down to one member?

Answer: Palau

In "Palau", the Koror tribe was dominant. It won every immunity challenge in the tribal phase and only lost one member because of a twist that sent both tribes to tribal council. On the other side, the Ulong tribe lost every immunity challenge. Ulong started with nine players and wound down to just one: Stephenie.

Instead of there being a merge, Stephenie simply became a member of Koror.
6. Survivor's fifteenth season, "China", contained a move that many fans call the dumbest move in "Survivor" history. Which contestant was it that got voted out while in possession of two hidden immunity idols?

Answer: James

James was originally a member of the dominant Fei Long tribe but was swapped over to Zhan Hu. At the new Zhan Hu, James was in the minority as that tribe's original members held a 3-2 majority and then later 3-1 with James being the one. After the new Fei Long won the reward challenge, the tribe "kidnapped" James. James gave a clue to the hidden immunity idol to Todd who found the idol and gave it to James so he could save himself should Zhan Hu throw the immunity challenge. However, Zhan Hu wound up winning the challenge so James kept the idol. He also found the idol hidden at Zhan Hu, giving him to.

During the merge phase, James was seen as a huge physical and social threat to win the game. But the other players felt powerless to vote him off because of his two idols. James' allies tricked him into thinking he was safe and voted him out without him playing either idol.
7. Another move that is frequently mentioned as the dumbest of all time occurred in "Micronesia" when Erik gave his individual immunity to Natalie and was then promptly voted off by the all-female alliance. What was the name of this alliance?

Answer: Black Widow Brigade

The final five on "Micronesia" were Erik and four women, Cirie, Amanda, Parvati and Natalie. The women called themselves the Black Widow Brigade because they were able to trick and send many of the men to their doom. Erik knew he had to win immunity otherwise he would be voted out. He did win and the women, rather than turn on their own, wondered how they could all survive another round. Cirie came up with the idea of tricking Erik into giving up his immunity to Natalie in order to make up for his past betrayals to her. To make him even more comfortable, Erik was told the women would vote out jury threat Amanda.

Erik fell for this plan and was promptly voted out 4-1 with the jury laughing at him.
8. "Heroes vs. Villains" also featured several iconic moments in the show's history. It also featured the first two-time winner. Which player won this season, her second win overall?

Answer: Sandra

Sandra had previously won "Pearl Islands", thirteen seasons prior. Sandra played a low key game on "Heroes vs. Villains" but always made sure she was in on the plans and guided them only when necessarily. She made it to the final tribal council she fought against the infamous Russell Hantz and former winner Parvati.

The jury, who openly hated Russell, seemed split between Sandra and Parvati. Ultimately, Sandra won her second season by a 6-3-0 vote.
9. "Kaoh Rong" was a season rife with medical emergencies. In the fourth episode during a gruelling challenge in the hot sun, three people fell ill. Which of the three had to be evacuated?

Answer: Caleb

This occurred during a reward challenge in episode four. One of the tasks involved digging in the sand to find bags of balls. The first indication of that something was wrong occurred during the digging portion when many of the contestants struggled to pick up just a handful of sand. Ultimately, the Brains tribe prevailed to win first place. Soon after that tribe won, Debbie fell ill with heat stroke. She initially refused medical attention but her tribe mates called the doctor over anyway. While she was recovering, the battle for second place was still ongoing. It was neck-and-neck between the Beauty tribe and the Brawn tribe, with Beauty narrowing claiming second place.

By the time the challenge was over, Debbie was feeling better but Caleb and Cydney collapsed. Caleb went down before Cydney and was in such bad condition that he passed out and his blood pressure dropped to the 30s. The entire medical crew was on him when Cydney went down almost unnoticed by anyone except her tribe. There were so many medical problems at once that nonmedical crew members were recruited to chip in.

Debbie and Cydney recovered but Caleb was deemed to be in too serious a condition to continue and was pulled from the game.
10. There have been many tied votes on "Survivor" but "Ghost Island" saw the very first tied vote for the winner at the final tribal council when Wendell and Dominic both received five votes. How was this tie resolved?

Answer: The third place finisher cast the deciding vote

Wendell and Dom had tied with five votes each. However, this tribal council had three finalists. Laurel had received no votes to win. Jeff then declared her the eleventh member of the jury and she would break the tie. She cast her vote for Wendell to win.
