Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two types of crab are fished for on the show?

Answer: king and opilio

The Fisheries Service imposes quotas on how many pounds of king and opilio crab can be caught and adjusts the lengths of the seasons appropriately. King crab season may only last four days, whereas opilio season may go a month.
2. Where do the boats on "Deadliest Catch" fish?

Answer: Bering Sea

In addition to crab, commercial fishermen also take cod, Pacific salmon, halibut, sole, sablefish, pollock and ocean perch from the Bering Sea. It is home to blue whales and the North Pacific right whale.
3. Where are the boats based?

Answer: Dutch Harbor

Dutch Harbor is situated on Amaknak Island, Alaska. It ranks among the top commercial fishing ports in the country. In 2003, 900 million pounds of fish were processed there with a value of almost $140 million.
4. Mike Rowe is the narrator. What Discovery Channel show does he star in?

Answer: Dirty Jobs

The premise for "Dirty Jobs" is that people write in to the network describing the dirty jobs they have. If your submission is picked, Mike Rowe and crew travel to your job site where he will learn to do your job. In the past he has caught catfish with his bare hands, helped rid some terribly infested houses of bugs, worked on an oil rig, in a charcoal mill and on an alligator farm. Most of his jobs, though, seem to involve "poo" in some way. Mike has also narrated "Ghost Hunters" and "American Chopper".
5. What is the name of the boat Sig Hansen captains?

Answer: Northwestern

Sig and his brothers Edgar and Norman all work on the Northwestern. The Hansens are fourth generation Norwegian fishermen. Crab fishing is a real family business. Several of the other boats are crewed by brothers or have sons working for their father who is the captain.
6. On January 15, 2005 one of the crab boats sank. What was the name of the boat?

Answer: Big Valley

There was only one survivor from the Big Valley.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, fishing was the deadliest occupation in the US in 2005, with Alaska being the deadliest place to be a commercial fisherman and December and January being the deadliest times to be a commercial fishermen. The crab season in Alaska runs in January and February. The 2005 mortality rate was .00118, meaning 118 deaths per 100,000 fishermen. The same rate applied to attorneys, for instance, would mean 1300 attorneys would die on the job each year.
Logging, being a commercial airplane pilot, working with steel and iron, collecting trash, and working on a farm round out the six deadliest jobs.
7. Donna Quashnick, the wife of skipper Rick, is the ship mother on which vessel?

Answer: Maverick

Donna cooks, cleans and cares for the crew of the Maverick. On one episode she told a new hand: "I will spoil you as much as you like to be spoiled." I can see how that would make the 30+ hour stints of pulling crab pots go by a little easier.
8. What organization is tasked with rescue work in the Bering Sea?

Answer: US Coast Guard

In addition to the cutters, the US Coast Guard has HH-60 Jayhawk and HH-65 Dolphin helicopters. Several times on "Deadliest Catch" Coast Guard helicopters have been used to make dramatic rescues of crab fishermen. In one instance, they plucked all five crewmembers off the back of a listing boat.

In season three, a diver jumped into the frigid sea to rescue the sole survivor of a sunken crab boat, the "Ocean Challenger."
9. What term is used for the new, inexperienced crew members?

Answer: greenhorns

A greenhorn generally gets the job of working with the bait--mincing it up and scooping it into the bait bags. At the end of the season crew members are paid a portion of the proceeds from the fishing with some crews earning over $30,000 each. Greenhorns, though, do not get a full share.

They might only get one half of what the other crew members make. Once they have enough experience to do all the jobs on the boat they earn a full share.
10. The Hillstrand brothers built and co-captain a boat which shares its name with a 1981 adventure comedy written by Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame. What is their boat called?

Answer: Time Bandit

"Time Bandits," the movie, follows a young boy as he goes on an adventure through time with a band of dwarfs who are looking for treasure. The movie stars John Cleese, Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall, Katherine Helmond and Ralph Richardson.
The boat, Time Bandit, also searches for treasure--crustacean treasure, only with a less well-known cast.
