Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Al Swearengen decided to support Mr. Wu against Mr. Lee in the struggle for control of the Chinese community. To ensure the hotheaded Wu's safety, Swearengen's men took him into protective custody. While his guard sleeps, Wu escapes and arranges the murder of Lee's giant henchman. Who rescues Wu from a confrontation with Lee?

Answer: Johnny Burns

As Wu, armed with a meat cleaver, faces off with a pistol carrying Lee, Johnny Burns draws his own weapon and returns the stubborn Wu to safety. Swearengen is furious to learn that one of his men has publicly taken sides against Lee, who is supported by mining magnate George Hearst.
2. Following the funeral of their son, Martha and Seth Bullock discuss Martha's future plans. What are they?

Answer: Teach school in Deadwood

Although Martha's first impulse is to flee the town that claimed the life of her young son, she later decides that becoming a schoolteacher would be in everyone's best interest. In a touching moment, Seth extends his hand to her, which she willingly clutches.
3. Ellsworth is a nervous wreck about his pending arranged marriage to his pregnant employer, Alma Garrett. From whom does he seek moral support?

Answer: Sol

The whole town is aware that Alma and Seth Bullock had a torrid love affair, and that she is now pregnant with Seth's child. The hardworking and honest Ellsworth has been a frequent visitor to the hardware store seeking Sol's advice and counsel.
4. In their first meeting, Swearengen apologizes to George Hearst for backing Mr. Wu, and offers Wu up to him. What does Hearst say is his only preoccupation?

Answer: The color

The pursuit of gold, or 'color' as it is sometimes referred, is Hearst's single-minded focus, and he is willing to deal with anyone able to assist his mining operations. When Swearengen claims that Wu can supply Chinese laborers, Hearst is open to the idea provided that Wu and "prove out" over Lee.
5. What business do George Hearst and E.B. Farnum transact?

Answer: Farnum sells Hearst his hotel

6. In an attempt to increase his value to George Hearst, Cy Tolliver discloses that he knows that Hearst's geologist, Francis Wolcott, murdered three prostitutes. Tolliver adds that he has a written confession. What does Hearst offer Tolliver as a payoff?

Answer: Two bags of gold

Tolliver rejects the gold and demands 5% of claims that he has helped Hearst acquire. Wolcott later admits the killings to his employer, who tells Wolcott that they must "end their connection". Wolcott, who has also murdered women in Mexico, hangs himself.
7. What does Al Swearengen give to Alma Garrett as a wedding present?

Answer: Letter

Prior to her departure from Deadwood, Miss Isringhausen, Alma's former tutor, gave Swearengen a letter confessing that she was a Pinkerton agent hired to wrongfully implicate Alma in the death of Alma's husband. From his balcony, Swearengen sees Sol and an elegantly dressed Trixie going to the wedding celebration. Al tosses the letter down and asks that it be given to Mrs. Garrett as a wedding present.
8. There has never been any love lost between Cy Tolliver and Andy Cramed. When Cramed contracted the plague while at Tolliver's saloon, Tolliver had his men take Andy out to die in the woods. Andy recently returned to Deadwood as a minister and conducted William Bullock's funeral and Alma Garrett's wedding, but Tolliver believes that Andy's conversion is merely a scam, and that he is still a gambler. The two men meet and Tolliver ridicules Andy for bringing the "plague" of religion into town. What does Andy Cramed do?

Answer: Stabs Tolliver

After Tolliver's comment, Andy says, "God is not mocked, you son of a bitch", and stabs Tolliver in the belly. Tolliver stumbles away muttering, "He gutted me. Don't let me die."
9. Swearengen dispatches three of his men to help Wu eliminate his rival, Mr. Lee. Afterwards, how does Wu show his allegiance to Swearengen?

Answer: Cuts off his pony tail

Dan Dority, Silas Adams and Johnny Burns disguise themselves as Chinese laborers and murder Mr. Lee's bodyguards, allowing Wu the pleasure of slitting Lee's throat while he is being serviced by a prostitute.
10. What does Seth Bullock do while the town is celebrating Alma's wedding?

Answer: Drinks alone

In the final scene of the season two finale, Al Swearengen returns to the Gem to find Seth drinking alone. After Al taunts him with a question about him having a home to go to, Seth leaves, only to make eye contact with Alma as she leaves the hotel with her new husband. The former lovers' lengthy gaze clearly indicates a continuing mutual attraction. Al interrupts the romantic scene by reminding Seth of the location of his house, "I believe it's to your right".
The award winning "Deadwood" has been renewed for a twelve episode third season, so, to quote the Terminator, "I'll be back".
