Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As morning dawned in Deadwood, where could George Hearst be found?

Answer: Laying on the floor

Apparently, the mining magnate has some hangups of his own. He sleeps on the bare floor under his bed.
2. A Hearst worker was killed in the Gem saloon. What was the unfortunate miner's native country?

Answer: England

A group of Cornishmen were drinking at the Gem and speaking their native tongue, a Celtic language spoken in Cornwall, England. Another customer felt threatened by the strange-sounding men, and shot one of them.
3. When first seen in the episode, what are the newlywed Ellsworth couple doing?

Answer: Rearranging furniture

After moving some furniture, Ellsworth and Sofia leave for school. Soon after, Alma collapsed on the floor.
4. What is the occupation of Seth Bullock's challenger for sheriff?

Answer: Bartender

Seth's opposition tends bar at Tom Nuttall's No. 10 Saloon. After the bartender's wishy-washy handling of a potential supporter, Nuttall commented, "I got an idea. Instead of running for office and tending bar, why don't you just tend bar and let people punch you in the face?"
5. What are the children doing in the first scene in Martha's classroom?

Answer: Praying

The Supreme Court ban on prayer in school was still a century away as the young children recited the "Lord's Prayer".
6. How did Calamity Jane greet Charlie Utter in the street?

Answer: Extending her middle finger

Charlie and Jane had both been close friends of the late Wild Bill Hickock. Jane's constant drunkenness has become a major concern of Utter's, and he has tried in vain to get her to stop drinking.
7. Why was Silas unable to repay his home loan to the bank?

Answer: Swearengen wanted Sol Star to live in the house

Trixie quickly recognized Silas' 'acting' when he burst in on Sol Star and ranted about not being able to repay his house note. The truth was that Al Swearengen wanted Sol to repossess the house and live there himself. Al felt that it wasn't proper for a mayoral candidate to be sleeping with a prostitute in his store. A secret passage for Trixie had already been planned.
8. Who is Shaunessey?

Answer: Landlord

Shaunessey rents rooms by the night, and Joanie Stubbs is one of his tenants. He constantly harangues her about the condition of her room. After contemplating suicide with a derringer to her head, Joanie responded to his inquiry by saying, "No disarray, but you nearly had brain on your walls."
9. Why did Seth Bullock want to withdraw from the sheriff's race?

Answer: Hearst would use his past affair with Alma against him

Hearst offered to back Bullock in the election for sheriff in return for him helping Hearst acquire Alma's mining holdings. Bullock left the meeting in a rage and proceeded to beat Mayor E.B. Farnum within an inch of his life. Bullock suspected that E.B. had supplied Hearst with information about Alma.
10. What did school teacher Martha Bullock ask of Calamity Jane?

Answer: Tell stories to the children

Martha had heard that Jane had scouted for General Custer and wanted her to share her experiences with the school children. Jane was lukewarm to the idea.
