Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which way in the desert, after the crash, do Paul and Jessica travel to find the freman?

Answer: South

Jessica asks Paul why they are going to find the freman. Paul tells her, "We're going to need them to take back Arrakis."
2. What part of the head do the stillsuits not cover?

Answer: Eyes

The stillsuit is a "body-enclosing garment." It is a freman design that performs the "functions of heat dissipation and filtering bodily wastes," as well as retaining and reclaiming moisture.
3. What is the name of Stilgar's sietch?

Answer: Tabr

A sietch was typically located within the mountains or rock outcrops that were scattered throughout the deserts of Arrakis, hidden from the harsh sun Canopus. It was located within either a man-made or a naturally carved cave system, or occasionally a combination of both.
4. Who invoked Amtal after Paul pushed past him?

Answer: Jamis

Amtal was a tradition practiced on many primitive worlds, which literally translated as tested to destruction. As this translation indicated, the purpose of amtal was to discover the limits of a person, regardless of the consequences.
5. Paul has had to kill many times but, does not like to.

Answer: False

Paul asks Jamis to yield once in the fight. Stilgar tells him, "There is no yielding. It's to the death, boy!" Jessica tells Stilgar Paul's never had to kill before. Stilgar informs her that he'd better learn!
6. What does the freman term 'Sayyadina' translate to?

Answer: Friend of God

The term Sayyadina was used by the Freman to describe their lower-ranking priestesses who had not yet passed within to become Reverend Mothers.

Often, a woman would be consecrated into the Sayyadina at the same time as a previous Sayyadina attempted the spice agony, so that all would not be lost if the potential Reverend Mother failed and died.
7. What kills Liet?

Answer: Spice blow

Spice blows were an event on Arrakis that resulted in the Spice Melange being pushed up to the surface of the desert. They were caused by immense pressure building up within the pre-spice mass, deep below the planets surface.
8. Whose birthday party did Princess Irulan have to attend at Giedi Prime?

Answer: Feyd

She tells her lady-in-waiting that the Emperor ought to be represented. Her real reason was to get information out of Feyd about what her father was planning for the Atreides.
9. How did Count Fenring describe Harkonnen architecture?

Answer: curious

Giedi Prime is a heavily industrialized planet with a low photosynthetic potential. House Harkonnen was most famous for its underhanded and sinister political tactics, and for an ancient feud it maintained with another Great House, House Atreides. In addition, House Harkonnen had a reputation for ambition, malevolence, hatred and brutality. It was typically ruled by a Siridar Baron.
10. Jessica tells the freman Reverend Mother Ramallo she is pregnant before she drinks the Water of Life.

Answer: False

There is evidence that Ramallo may have been a Bene Gesserit herself that went rogue from the Missionaria Protectiva, who had planted myths and legends on Arrakis eons before the arrival of the Atreides. However, no direct evidence for this exists.
11. Does Irulan realize her father was behind the attack on the Atreides?

Answer: Yes

After the attack on the Atreides, she immediately realizes that her father is the only one who could have possibly helped the Harkonnens. Irulan spies on Mohiam's clandestine meeting with a Spacing Guild operative; realizing that something big is afoot, she heads for the Harkonnen home world of Giedi Prime and coyly coerces Feyd into confirming her suspicions.
12. What is Glossu Rabban Harkonnen's nickname?

Answer: Beast

He inherited the Harkonnen penchant for sadism and cruelty, but not the cunning. He was best known for his tyrannical and vastly ineffective governance of Arrakis during the Harkonnen fiefdom of Arrakis, as well as during the insurgency of the Freman led by Paul Muad'Dib. He earned the nickname "Beast" when he killed his father, Abulurd Harkonnen.
13. What role did Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam play in the imperial court?

Answer: Truth-sayer

Little known fact: Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam played an important role in the breeding programs of the Sisterhood on Wallach IX, and was the birth mother of Lady Jessica, although the breeding charts list Jessica's birth mother as Tanidia Nerus, Mohiam's own birth name. Mohiam conceived her daughter through a vicious rape by the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who attacked Mohiam out of pure rage and disgust when she requested he impregnate her.

He meant to show the Sisterhood that he could not be used as a pawn in their schemes, but his satisfaction in overpowering was short-lived, for Mohiam, using her Bene Gesserit training, transferred a degenerative disease into the Baron via intercourse, mutating his once-beautiful male form into a bloated, obese monstrosity. Lady Jessica's parentage was kept secret from her.
14. Who has a vertical scar on his left eye?

Answer: Gurney Halleck

Along with Thufir Hawat and Duncan Idaho, Halleck was one of Paul's principal teachers during his early years on Caladan. He was a ruthless, yet noble and romantic warrior of enormous talent. Described as "an ugly lump of a man", he was regarded the most loyal of friends to those he loved, and to those he hated there were few enemies more terrifying.
15. Who plays the role of Paul Atreides in the TV mini-series version of "Dune"?

Answer: Alec Newman

William Hurt portrayed Paul's father Leto, Kyle MacLachlan was Paul in the 1984 version of "Dune" and Jürgen Prochnow brought the role of Leto to the 1984 version. Alec Newman reprised the role of Paul Atreides in the sequel "Children of Dune." I will have one more quiz coming soon for this mini-series, then I will make three more for "Children of Dune." Look for them!
