Benton was trying to get away from Romano, the tyrant of the surgical staff, and when Elizabeth mentioned she was attempting to get a fellowship for herself, he jumped on the idea and applied for it, unbeknownst to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was supposed to present at a conference. on her way there, she ran into Mark, who was attending the conference. They end up getting lost in the hotel (after having arrived late), and eventually crash a wedding, where they dance a tango.

Elizabeth invited Mark, his father and his daughter over for a Thanksgiving Dinner. However, this day did not go as planned. Elizabeth's television didn't work, thus disappointing Mark's father who hoped to watch football. Mark's father kept talking about how the Americans 'saved' the British during WWII. Mark leaves everyone and goes to the hospital to help Carol deliver her twins. Rachel gets her first period. And Mark's father slips on the ice while out buying pads for Rachel.

They all end up together in the ER while Elizabeth sewed up Mark's father's forehead.

Elizabeth's astrophysicist mom was in town and discovers Elizabeth operating on Romano's dog. (He's very attached... to the dog, that is.) Elizabeth, Mark, Elizabeth's mother and Mark's father all go out to eat where Mark's father joins in a round of karaoke - impressing Elizabeth's mom.

After spending the night with Mark, she had to stop at her place to get something. When she arrived, Mark's father was there. In her robe. Elizabeth's mother went back to the UK soon after.

She tried to decline, but eventually took it knowing it would make him happy. Elizabeth gave Mark back the necklace after his father died, insisting he give it to his daughter, Rachel, instead.

Elizabeth had been complaining about Mark's apartment. She kept getting parking tickets because she didn't know what side of the street to park on. (And actually, had been getting more but Mark quietly paid them without informing her.) His apartment was rundown... So Mark brought her over to a house one day and said they were buying it.

As she toured the house, he got her to open the freezer, where the ring was propped up.

Elizabeth was having a bad day. It was raining. She was hugely pregnant and only picked out the dress she did so she wouldn't look so big. Her mother kept asking her to have some tea to calm down. Then Mark had to return to the ER, but each time he left, he ended up back at the ER because of traumas and pure bad luck. Meanwhile, the limo messed up Elizabeth's order and never showed, forcing Elizabeth to drive herself and her mother to the church. (Elizabeth didn't trust her mother to drive on the right side of he road.) Rachel's plane was delayed, then canceled so she never made it at all. Once she arrived at the church, Elizabeth ended up in a room with her mother and father... who, for once, acted cordial to each other while they tried to calm Elizabeth down while waiting for Mark's arrival. Romano did talk to Elizabeth, but he only mentioned she looked nice and that Mark was on his way.

Benton went to the wedding, despite the fact Elizabeth was his ex-girlfriend. Romano also attended, flanked by two blondes. Weaver wasn't invited, and had to deal with nurses calling in sick so they too could attend the wedding.

Kate was one of Carol's twins. Rachel was Mark's daughter with his first wife. Elizabeth first went into labour while out in the field attempting a field amputation. Eventually, she stabilised and was able to give birth at the proper time. After an embarrassing false labour run through the ER.

Mark had a tumour in his brain for his final few seasons. At first, he's told it was inoperable, but he later found a surgeon willing to risk it with a new procedure. The first operation was a success and Mark lived another year or so before a recurrence killed him.

Rachel had come to live with Mark and Elizabeth because she wasn't getting along with her own mother. Mark's suspicions about Rachel's drug habit finally were confirmed when Ella ended up with an overdose of ecstasy.

Elizabeth blamed Mark for Ella's overdose as he was unable to control Rachel. Because Mark was unwilling to send Rachel away, Elizabeth moved out so she could protect Ella.

When Mark found out his tumour had re-appeared, Elizabeth found out - but not from him. Romano comforted Elizabeth and told her she belonged at home with her dying husband.

Mark had lived at Pearl Harbor when he was younger, so he took Rachel there to try and 'fix' her and show her more about his own childhood. At the hotel where they were staying, Rachel started to steal Mark's medicine and washed the pills down with alcohol from the minibar. He then moved them to a 'retreat house' and finally rented a home when, after suffering a seizure, he realised he would be unable to return to Chicago. Elizabeth and Ella flew out to stay with him and Rachel. He died in the morning (his favourite time of day). He'd written a letter to the ER staff, which Elizabeth found and faxed to the ER with a message that he'd passed away.
