All of these sort of interrelated, but the direct cause of the wave was the underwater earthquake, as stated by the Coast Guard. The underwater earthquake was caused by the volcanic eruption, which was caused by Tony and his technology.

They were never actually seen during the ocean journey, but Bo and Brady mentioned that they were swimming over to the speedboat to make a plan with Tek and Abe.

The speedboat was also called the "cigarette boat". Jack, Jennifer and the baby were riding on it. Also aboard (but not seen) were Cassie, Abe, Tek, Alice, Maggie, and Doug.

The Coast Guard radar picked up what looked like a "speedboat and a number of small handmade rafts". The Coast Guard wondered who those people were and why they were out there. As the tidal wave approached, they knew they would not be able to rescue them in time.

The rafts were scattered through the wavy waters. There was Bo, Billie and Hope's raft; Victor, Brady, Caroline and Nicole's raft; Roman, John, and Marlena's raft, and presumably others. (While they were away, Nicole pleaded with Victor not to turn her in, Billie and Hope shared an "honest" discussion about Bo, and Marlena and John talked about the "what if".)

Jack told Jennifer that he was going to check on her grandmother. The two had just decided on the baby's name. (They decided on "Jack", since Jennifer said it would have been "Jaqueline" if the baby was a girl.) They kissed goodbye, and it was the last time she saw him near the island.

Brady looked over the raft at the churning water below and noticed the peculiarity of the ocean. When everyone saw the massive wave heading towards them, they clutched onto the raft and the nearest person. The forty foot wall of water (as tall as a building, according to the Coast Guard) came rushing down.

Celeste read many fortunes at the party, including Mimi's, Sami's, and Uncle Mickey's. When she searched her cards for the "new danger" surrounding the islanders, a wave of water actually rushed out of the card at her. She gave a gloomy prediction; water, drowning, death.

While reading Uncle Mickey's fortune about Maggie, Celeste insisted that she was alive and that Mickey could be losing her all over again (as she is wheeled onto the rescue boat from the water).

Maggie was brought in and the Coast Guard mentioned that she was the first to be fished out and that there were others, in worse shape. Next came Hope, who told Maggie that Bo rescued her and went back for Billie. Maggie said Alice was below deck, and Tek went to find Abe. Jennifer, Patrick and the baby arrived next, followed by Brady and Nicole. John had been saved by Marlena, and Billie and Doug were below deck.

The last names to be called were Tek and Abe.

On the "missing and presumed dead" list read by the Coast Guard were:

The hopes of the rescued had been shattered once more. Bo asked why the Bradys had to suffer the most, and John said, "This isn't right. We didn't come this far just to lose them all over again."
