The morning after the events that befell the Crain Family at Hill House on that fateful night, Hugh ended up in the interrogation room at the local police station. He submitted himself, voluntarily, to make sure the story was straight, leaving the kids with Aunt Janet. Hugh remained in the building to ensure that the story left him without a shred of suspicion.

He was not under arrest; he could leave at any time. In the meantime, some of the police were also at the house speaking to the Dudleys. And the whole mess wasn't even accounting for the other body that was found in the house.

Answer: Interior walls

The day of the funeral, Hugh dresses while speaking out loud to Olivia. It's clear that he believes she is with him, speaking to him. He heads to Shirley's house where his own grandchildren, having never met him, don't recognize him. Kevin arrives to prepare and the kids are sent off to get read for the visitation.

Although Hugh tries to make amends with Shirley at this time, asking her to lay off her sister for taking the money, she insists that he try to lecture Theo instead. Olivia tells Hugh to bear with his daughter, today especially, since it's hard for all of them. The night after the storm, Hugh walked the storm-damaged halls of Hill House with Mr. Dudley, and when he did, Steven alerted him to a particularly squishy wall. Further investigation found several walls in the house damaged, potentially from a burst pipe.

Answer: Theo

Hugh, Mr. Dudley, and Steven descended into the basement of the house to discover that mold and water had already sunk into the cellar-- three storeys down-- which implied that there could be no way it was the storm. Water had pooled even deeper; the damage was particularly extensive. Taking a photo into a hole in the cellar wall, Hugh believed it to be black mold and sent Steven upstairs. That's when he and Mr. Dudley heard something in the walls-- maybe rats. Looking down at the picture, he saw nothing but the almost mistakable outline of a man's shadow.

The whole situation could have ruined them. Hugh, early for the funeral, heads to the guesthouse to talk to Theo. She lets him in for coffee. He suggests that Luke has seemed to have gotten himself on the right track.

Theo, however, might have made herself a bit worse. She apologizes to her father for not trying as hard as she should have. Hugh realizes this might be a bit more complicated than just Steven's money. Neither Hugh nor Olivia expect that outcome.

Answer: The room with the red door

Hugh found damage in the walls of the master bedroom, the library, the parlour, and the basement. The water lines didn't even account for it. None of the floorplans and work records made sense either. If the Crains couldn't fix it fast, then they would lose all the money on the house flip. Hugh brought in an inspector who, upon prodding, suggested that maybe the leak was originating in the one room they never checked-- the one with the red door, and because they had no key-- but there were no rat droppings in the walls, so the culprit wouldn't be that. At the funeral, Hugh watches as Steven and Leigh exhibit obvious tension. Olivia tells him not to be sad for his son's marriage and not to blame himself.

When Hugh sits to talk to Luke, he congratulates him on his ninety days of sobriety. Olivia asks him not to make the day about anyone except Nell.

Theo arrives for the funeral hungover and Luke suggests she chug beer mixed with tomato sauce...or heroin, ironically. Worse than that idea is that the next moment, Trish walks in having read the obituary. Theo is angry with her, but Trish just came to support. Hugh and Luke, sitting off to the side, laugh about the situation. Hugh claims Olivia knew about Theo's preferences when she was 8. Aunt Janet is next to arrive.

She gives her condolences before joining the rest. And with that, Shirley commenced the ceremony. Instead of hiring a mold guy to fix their plumbing issues, Hugh and Steven tore down the basement wall, lighting up the inside and setting up fans. What they found was moldy brick, and behind that they heard the sound of rats scratching once more. Hugh believed that maybe the water came from the red room upstairs, but when Olivia provided him with the revised blueprints, he found something more concerning.

Answer: When she stopped coming to Hill House at night

Hugh later showed the odd blueprints to Mr. Dudley, asking him to search for the key to the red room one more time. He would need to ask Olivia about the blueprints, undoubtedly; Mr. Dudley suggested that maybe Olivia take time away from the house for a change of pace.

In fact, Mr. Dudley recommended it based on his own past with the house. His mother, who worked in the kitchen for years, used to come home scattered. She would talk to herself. Towards the end she'd wander into the forest barefoot, talking low.

She'd sleep out there sometimes. When she died, Clara got hired on working at Hill House. Clara never complained, but he believes that the house did something to her, especially with the nightmares. She worked through her first pregnancy; the baby was stillborn. One night, cleaning the master bedroom, Clara heard the crying of a baby.

She ran home to tell him and bring him back to the house and, sure enough, he heard it too. They stopped coming to the house after dark after that. That worked. No more nightmares. No more coming home scattered.

Answer: Her father

The family stands in front of the audience, one at a time, at Nell's funeral. After Shirley reads a poem, Luke rises to tell a the story of the final time he spoke to Nell. She was always a big sister to him, he claims, even if he was born ninety seconds before her. After their speeches, the family hops into their cars to head to the cemetery. Shirley sends Kevin with Aunt Janet, suggesting she'll meet them there. She checks the next car up but refuses it too since Theo is riding in it with Steven. It leaves her with one remaining ride-- her father. On the ride, he compliments her service and dives into the conversation despite Olivia's insistence, from the backseat, that he not get involved.
After speaking to Mr. Dudley, Hugh headed upstairs to check through Olivia's drafting materials, finding old blueprints to cross-check his wife's work. What he finds concerning.
Soon after, while dealing with the busted fans in the basement, he believed he saw the silhouette of a man on the brick wall. It was enough to distract him as he accidentally placed his hand into the blades. Angry after the fan issue in the basement, Hugh took a hammer and crowbar to the lock of the red door upstairs. It wasn't enough to do the trick.

At the cemetery, the family took their turns tossing dirt into Nell's grave. Aunt Janet, in particular, takes this moment the hardest (having raised her). Luke is the last to step up to the grave and only when the others have walked away, but when he does he sees his mother's ghost inside as she tries to pull him in and please for him to stay. Steven is the only one to see him struggle at the grave's edge; he pulls him back and tells him to be realistic. None of it can be real, he argues. It's a sickness and it's in their genes.
He wasn't the only one to see this though. Hugh, listening nearby, overhears the conversation and tries to insert himself into it. He's too late to help though.
In Hill House, one night Hugh woke up to find Olivia straddled atop him in the bed, a screwdriver in her hand, pointed at his neck. When she woke out of her trance, she didn't know what she was doing. She admitted she had a horrible dream. That was the night he asked her to explain the blueprint she drew, one covered with odd markings. She claims not to know what it is. He says that the shapes she drew all over it were just the shape of the house they dreamt about building copied over and over again. He suggested she take a break and leave the house. She agreed, but didn't know how.

Answer: Himself

At the reception, Hugh watches visitors come and go, paying their last respects. Olivia tells Hugh that he did good. He can finish his drink and head out and not see them again for years if he doesn't want to. But he does want to. He checks in with Luke, explaining that he heard the brothers talking at the grave.

He admits to seeing Olivia every day, perhaps just as a coping mechanism. He restates his pride for his youngest son and asks him to keep it up before Luke leaves. At Hill House, Hugh finished his work in the basement, spraying the walls one night before hearing the scratching worse than ever. That night, he decided to put out the rat poison. Chipping away at the wall, he wedged his way in, removing a handful of bricks to get access.

But when he broke through he found what he never expected-- a human body. The police would later identify the corpse as that of William Hill, missing since 1948. It looked like he bricked himself in.

Answer: In the office

As the funeral comes to an end, Hugh sees off Steven but he has trouble getting the words he really needs to say across. Instead of an apology, he simply wishes him well. Their goodbye, however, is interrupted by Shirley, whose wallet is missing from her purse, and Theo, whose car is missing from the driveway. Hugh knows the truth-- it had to have been Luke.

He admits he knew Luke left an hour ago but he doesn't know more than that. While Shirley and Steven go off to look, Theo and Hugh see markings on the floor leading to Shirley's office and they follow them inside to see a her building model broken on the floor.

Theo goes to clean it up, and that's when Olivia's ghost crawls out. Both of them see it before it disappears. Shirley, responding to the screaming, comes in to find Theo and Hugh on the floor, but she doesn't see the ghost. Hugh promises he'll fix everything. The night after the family fled the house, Hugh never gave away what happened to the police. Olivia was supposed to be with Aunt Janet.

She never left. The detective asked more about what Hugh saw when he claimed he went upstairs. Hugh explained that he saw nothing-- the door to the red room was locked, as always. This time though, it wasn't.
