Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Ricky Gervais' character?

Answer: Andy Millman

As the title suggests, Andy cobbles what little money he has together by working as an extra on various films and television shows.
2. Who was the guest star in the first episode shown on UK television?

Answer: Ben Stiller

This was probably quite a tough one if you're not from the UK. Ross Kemp was scheduled to be the first guest star, but apparently Gervais preferred the Stiller one, so he led with this one instead. In America, the first episode shown was the Kate Winslet one, hence my earlier comment!
3. In the Ross Kemp episode, what did the former "Eastenders" actor think SAS actually stood for?

Answer: Super Army Soldiers

I have to admit, I laughed long and hard at this scene from a classic episode. Kemp hilariously played a "wuss" version of himself who is terrified of Vinnie Jones.
4. What does Kate Winslet try to advise Maggie on in episode three?

Answer: Phone Sex

The phrase "polishing your bumpers" was completely innocent before this episode...
5. Les Dennis played an ultra-pathetic version of himself. This one was painful to watch because of the truth in it! What was the name of Les' real life adulterous ex-wife?

Answer: Amanda Holden

Les happily admits that appearing in "Extras" changed his life for the better, after sending himself up BIG style! His actress ex-wife, Amanda Holden, had a much publicised affair with "Men Behaving Badly" star Neil Morrissey in 2002. They separated a year later.
6. What politically incorrect item did Maggie try to hide from a guy she'd taken back to her place in the Samuel L Jackson episode?

Answer: A golliwog

Maggie had taken a very amiable chap back to her flat and was horrified when she noticed the doll on her shelf. She desperately tried to hide it from him, thinking it may offend him because of his colour. This was my personal favourite episode from the 1st series.
7. What is the first name of Andy's arch rival in "Extras", who pops up from time to time just to gloat about how well he's doing?

Answer: Greg

This highly irritating character, played by the very talented Shaun Pye , is also extremely convincing. I've known LOTS of people like him!
8. Matt Damon was scheduled to appear in the final episode of series one.

Answer: False

It was Jude Law, not Damon, who was supposed to be appearing in the season finale. Luckily Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant managed to convince Patrick Stewart to play a lecherous version of himself instead in what was one of the highlights of the show for me.
9. On to the second season - which of the following is NOT one of the things Andy is annoyed that the BBC has forced him into using in his dreadful sitcom "When The Whistle Blows"?

Answer: False Moustache

Keith Chegwin plays an hilarious version of himself in the first episode, completely unable to comprehend the instructions that Andy, as director, is shouting at him.
10. David Bowie performed a song towards the end of his episode. It wasn't mentioned in the show but it actually has a proper title. What is its correct name?

Answer: Pug Nosed Face Song

In probably the most callous moment in "Extras" history, Andy is pouring his heart out to Bowie, who suddenly starts composing a song using our protagonist's predicament as the basis for it. It all gets VERY nasty, but somehow is still very funny!
11. In the "Daniel Radcliffe" episode, who or what did Andy accidentally kick over?

Answer: A dwarf

A complete accident, the "dwark-kicking" scene further villainized Millman in the tabloid press after a previous misunderstanding in a top class restaurant.
12. Season two, episode four - Which pop star played himself as someone who greedily uses charity events and popular TV shows as a way of promoting his own band?

Answer: Chris Martin

The Coldplay singer's cameo was one of the best things about series two. Of course, in the same episode, the ludicrous thought of newsreader Moira Stuart providing cocaine for the diminutive comedian Ronnie Corbett was equally amusing.
13. Which "Lord of the Rings" star was featured in episode five?

Answer: Sir Ian McKellan

Millman gets a part in a play, which is being directed by the theatre and TV veteran. He delivers some highly amusing lines when advising Andy how to act, but without a doubt the most gut wrenchingly funny scene ever in "Extras" - for me at least - involved Andy, a young lady and a bottle of fizzy water! Orlando Bloom had previously been in the very first episode of the series.
14. Which Hollywood legend appeared in the final episode of series two?

Answer: Robert De Niro

De Niro looks thoroughly bemused until Millman's buffoon of an agent, Darren Lamb, shows him a "Stripper pen" which he is so enchanted by that the pair go off for a night on the town!
15. Finally, there was a running joke throughout both series that Andy Millman lost his virginity at the age of 28 to a girl who looked like which veteran British comedian?

Answer: Ronnie Corbett

The look on Corbett's face when an old flame of Andy's announces this on stage at the BAFTA's is priceless!
