Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which big box office actress got her start as Jackie Templeton on "General Hospital"?

Answer: Demi Moore

Demi Moore played Jackie Templeton on "General Hospital" from 1982 to 1983. Jackie arrived on the show as an investigative reporter from New York in search of her missing sister Laura. Jackie eventually fell in love with the dashing spy Robert Scorpio (played by Tristan Rogers). Three years after leaving the show and dealing with drug problems, Demi achieved fame in the 1986 movie "St. Elmo's Fire". Demi has since starred in many major pictures including "G.I. Jane" and "Ghost".
2. Who portrayed Jackie Templeton's kleptomaniac sister Laura Templeton on "General Hospital"?

Answer: Janine Turner

Janine Turner played Laura Templeton on "General Hospital" in 1982 and 1983. In 1983, she won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actress in a Daytime Series. She later went on to star as Maggie O'Connell, on "Northern Exposure" from 1990 to 1995 opposite Rob Morrow, who played Dr. Joel Fleischman. Wikipedia.org calls Maggie a "fiery, independent, yet somewhat neurotic bush-pilot, whose boyfriends all die in bizarre accidents".
3. Who portrayed Julie Chandler from 1986 to 1989 on "All My Children"?

Answer: Lauren Holly

Lauren Holly played the character Julie Chandler from 1986 to 1989. She was the adopted daughter of Ross Chandler (son of Lottie Chandler, Adam and Stuart's sister, and raised as a Chandler although it eventually comes out that Adam's arch-rival Palmer Courtland is Ross's father) and his wife Ellen. Julie's first love-interest was Charlie Brent, but she later married Nico Kelly, played by Maurice Benard, in 1988.

After leaving "All My Children," Maurice played Michael "Sonny" Corinthos, Jr. on "General Hospital" beginning in 1993. Lauren Holly took on the role of Maxine Stewart on the quirky "Picket Fences" from 1992 to 1996, deputy in smalltown Rome, Wisconsin.

Her fellow cast members on the show included Tom Skeritt ("Alien" and "Steel Magnolias"), Kathy Baker ("Edward Scissorhands" and "Cold Mountain"), Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda"), Holly Marie Combs ("Charmed"), Adam Wylie ("E.R."), Fyvush Finkel ("Boston Public") and Ray Walston ("My Favorite Martian"). From there Lauren starred major motion pictures such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "What Women Want".
4. What movie star started out as Kent Murray on "General Hospital" in 1972?

Answer: Mark Hamill

Jessie Brewer, a central character on "General Hospital" in its early days, found herself guardian of two children upon the untimely death of her already widowed brother. These children were Carol and Kent Murray. Mark Hamill played young Kent Murray in 1972 and 1973, and in 1975 went on to portray Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars" (later retitled "A New Hope"). From there he reprised the same role in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi".

These three films are now known as Episodes IV, V and VI in the "Star Wars" series.
5. Which actress portrayed Karen Wolek on "One Life to Live" from 1977 to 1983?

Answer: Judith Light

In her years on "One Life to Live", Judith Light's character Karen Wolek married Dr. Larry Wolek for his money and position, slept with wealthy men in exchange for clothes and jewelry, was blackmailed into prostituting herself, revealed her secret life as a hooker on the witness stand at a murder trial, was raped by her brother-in-law, choreographed a baby-switch and was almost murdered more than once.

She won Daytime Emmy Awards in 1980 and 1981. In 1984, Judith Light began her portrayal of Angela Bower, a single mom and business woman who hires a male housekeeper (Tony Danza, soon after his run on "Taxi") with a young daughter of his own (Alyssa Milano), on long-running sit-com "Who's the Boss?"
6. Which actress portrayed Mary Ryan Fenelli on "Ryan's Hope" in the 70's and 80's?

Answer: Kate Mulgrew

Kate Mulgrew portrayed the oldest Ryan daughter on "Ryan's Hope". Along with many other TV and movie performances, from 1995 to 2001, Kate Mulgrew portrayed Captain Kathryn Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager".
7. Who played Melanie "Lanie" Courtland on "All My Children" from 1989 to 1991?

Answer: Paige Turco

Paige Turco portrayed Palmer Courtland's niece Melanie "Lanie" Courtland on "All My Children" from 1989 to 1991. She later went on to appear in multiple episodes of "NYPD Blue" as Officer Abby Sullivan and in multiple episodes of "Party of Five" as Annie Mott, but I think she was best as Gail Emory in "American Gothic", the short-lived supernatural show Shaun Cassidy created in 1995.

This show starred Gary Cole as the sheriff of small South Carolina town Trinity and featured Lucas Black, who was so awesome in "Slingblade", as Paige's young cousin. Ends up the sheriff is actually his father. (And also the devil incarnate?)
8. Which talk show hostess appeared on "All My Children" as Hayley Vaughan for many years?

Answer: Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa's character on "All My Children", Hayley Vaughan, came into Pine Valley as the punk rocker teen of her alcoholic single mom. Ends up she is actually the daughter of millionaire Adam Chandler. She continued this role from 1990 to 2002. Kelly met her husband Mark Consuelos (who played Mateo Santos) while on "All My Children". Later, she became co-host of "Live with Regis and Kelly" and subsequently co-starred with Faith Ford in the prime time sit-com "Hope and Faith".
9. What movie star began portraying Joshua Hall on "One Life to Live" at the age of twelve?

Answer: Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne appeared on "One Life to Live" from 1973 to 1976 as Josh, a street kid later adopted by Lt. Ed Hall and his wife Carla. Much later, Laurence landed roles in major motion pictures like "Boyz in the Hood" and "The Matrix". He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ike Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It?"
10. Which pop star briefly portrayed Noah Drake on "General Hospital"?

Answer: Rick Springfield

Rick Springfield recorded his "Working Class Dog" album, which featured his biggest hit, "Jessie's Girl", before he signed on for the role of Dr. Noah Drake on "General Hospital" in 1981. He ended up winning a Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance for "Jessie's Girl" and in 1983 gave up the soap to concentrate on his pop career.

He also starred in the 1984 movie "Hard to Hold". Incidentally, Rick's stint on "General Hospital" coincided with those of Demi Moore and Janine Turner as well as John Stamos, who went on to star in the sit-com "Full House".

In 1984, John Stamos won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in a Daytime Series for his work as Blackie Parrish.
