Sam is beaten half to death trying to defend Gilly's honor. It is ultimately Ghost that scares the men off. This leaves Gilly intact and able to nurse Sam back to health, while taking his virginity at the same time. That's a heck of a thank you! This is the first and only episode in which Brant and Derek appear. Karl and Rast died a season earlier at Craster's Keep. Matthar, Balian, Niko and Escan were all newly made Rangers in the graduating class that included Sam and Jon Snow.

When Sam arrives at Castle Black, during his first sword fighting session, he squeals repeatedly as he's being beaten. Alliser Thorne notes the South is now sending him "squealing bloody pigs". Jon Snow comes to Sam's defense, so Thorne orders Jon to fight against three brothers to "defend his lady love". Thorne says the three of them should be enough to "make lady piggy squeal".

After this, Piggy or Lady Piggy become the names the more hateful brothers use to refer to Sam at times. Pyp once referred to Sam as "Prince Pork-chop" before they became friends.

As a child, Sam would sit and read to his mother while she sewed, so she gave him her thimble when his father made him leave Horn Hill and join the Watch. When the Night's Watch was forced to leave Craster's Keep, Sam wants to give Gilly the only thing he has that means anything to him. He wants her to keep it safe for him until he comes back for her.

Although named in the light of the Seven, Sam decides to convert to the Old Gods to take his Night's Watch vows under the weirwood tree with Jon Snow. When the Lord Commander asked why he would forsake his Gods, Sam replies, "the Seven have never answered my prayers, perhaps the Old Gods will."

Grenn and Edd initially left Sam when they heard the three horn blasts signaling White Walkers were approaching, but on the way back to the Wall, they tried to help Sam when he collapsed. After the Battle, Mormont was very angry with Sam for not getting the ravens out, but later orders a very angry Rast to make sure Sam makes it back alive, saying "if he doesn't, you don't".

After Sam tells Gilly a long story about an abandoned castle and a secret tunnel they can use to get south of the Wall, she tells him, "You're like a wizard". Sam beams with pride as he's never been admired by anyone before. Also, in Season One, Sam tried to console Jon when he angry he put with the stewards.

When Jon said, "I always wanted to be a ranger", Sam replied, "I always wanted to be a wizard".

As Sam and Gilly decide to leave Horn Hill during the night, Sam first stops to grab the family sword from over the mantel. Gilly is concerned his father may be angry and come after it, to which Sam replies, "He can bloody well try". Sam is truly becoming a man! Sam later gives the sword to Jorah Mormont, stating it was Jorah's father who taught him to become a man, and he thought the sword should belong to someone who could at least hold it upright.

Cressen was the maester who discovered Shireen Baratheon's greyscale affliction and treated it immediately, curing her of the disease. Pylos was the maester who developed a procedure for removing greyscale and wrote a book on the study of rare diseases. Pylos later died of greyscale, but Sam still found him worthy of using his book when treating Jorah Mormont's advanced greyscale.

Dolorous Edd saves Sam then yells "Sam get up!" As soon as Sam is back on his feet, Edd is killed in the Great War while still face to face with Sam.

Sam read in a book that the Nightfort had a secret tunnel where Bran and his companions could get north of the Wall to the Three Eyed Raven. Shadow Tower and Eastwatch-by-the-Sea were two of the three remaining manned castles along with Castle Black. Greyguard is where Jon tried to send Janos Slynt to repair and restore, but he refused, so Jon executed Janos.
