Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is George's best mate (and possibly only mate)?

Answer: Jerry

Jerry is a somewhat-overweight, dodgy, light-fingered, get-rich-quick scam-artist. He only ever contacts George when he needs something (like money or booze, or a place to stay with his "niece"). One day Mildred catches George going through her bank books. Oops! Unable to think of a good excuse on the spot, George tells her about Jerry's latest business idea: Kentucky-Fried Pigeons. Jerry's looking for investors. Now Mildred understands: "Ah - and you want money to get your head examined?"
2. In season 5 George uses someone else's credit card to buy Mildred a fur coat.

Answer: False

Mildred is over-joyed that George remembers their 26th anniversary (although she'd been reminding him for weeks!). He hasn't got her a present yet, but later in the pub he finds a lost credit card. That night he surprises his wife with a fur coat. She's thrilled... until Ann mentions the next day it was lucky someone as honest as George found a lost credit card at the pub. What?! Mildred puts two and two together.

She hurriedly returns the coat to the shop, and storms home to reprimand George. How could George!? Just then a man calls round from the police-station. Mildred turns pale, and assures the man George is sorry; he has memory problems.

But the man actually has come to thank George for returning his lost credit card. Eh?! Mildred gasps, and runs back to get her coat. Back home, looking guilty, she tells her husband how profoundly sorry she is. "That's all very well, but I think an apology is in order! You doubted my honesty Mildred. That hurt!" Gulping, Mildred takes back every single word.

She will never doubt his honesty again. But how did George afford the coat? George explains, "I went down to the bank and forged your signature."
3. Who is the Indian doctor who gives George a medical examination in season 1?

Answer: Dr. White

Mildred decides to take out some life insurance for her husband. She sends him to the obligatory medical check-up... eventually. George grumbles, but Mildred points out "They're not going to insure you if you're falling apart. So try not to show it!" She then adds the physician is one Dr. White. Naturally George gets a surprise when he meets him...
4. What is the chief fault of Ann, Mrs. Fourmile from next door?

Answer: None of these

Ann Fourmile is completely faultless! Shelia Fearn does a SUPERB job of portraying such a lovely woman. She's attractive, down-to-earth, a wonderful mother, heart-of-gold, friendly and caring. One must wonder why she married snooty Jeffrey! Mildred is lucky to befriend her when they move next door (not least because Mildred has few other friends). Ann goes out of her way to help people - and frequently tries to teach her husband to be nice to George and Mildred. (Note I said "tries".)
5. Which of the following is NOT a pet of George or Mildred's?

Answer: Fido

Oscar is George's budgie before moving to Hampton Wick. When Oscar passes away George complains he's alone in the world. Mildred says, "You've got me." George moans, "But Oscar really liked me." Mildred nods, "I get your point." Later George gets a goldfish named Moby (till Mildred accidentally flushes Moby down the drain).

In the final episode George is meeting a lady-friend named Beryl who doesn't know he's still married. When Mildred gets home early, George quickly ducks outside and stops Beryl in time.

He leads her into the Fourmiles' home instead, claiming it's his (luckily they're out!). The Fourmiles' new cat is purring on the couch when they walk in. Beryl asks the cat's name. Thinking quickly, George replies "Um...Fido!"
6. What game do George and Tristram play when George is babysitting him?

Answer: Poker

At the end of season 2 George is babysitting for The Fourmiles on the night of their drama club meeting. Mildred goes too - and gets cast as Cinderella's ugly sister. They arrive back late and are surprised to see George and Tristram still up and playing cards. Thinking quickly, George puts down a card. "Snap!" But Tristram ruins everything. "'Snap'? You don't say 'snap' in poker." Horrified gasps all around! George is quickly sent home by the furious Mildred.

But Tristram happily counts his winnings, asking if "Uncle George" can babysit next time.
7. What goes wrong when George babysits little Tarquin from next door?

Answer: He leaves the baby at the pub

Tarquin's family go to a funeral out of town. Mildred jumps at the chance to babysit; she's always wanted children. Later she has to go to her night class so George is stuck indoors. To make matters worse, the Fourmiles' car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. George has to go to a dart's match at the pub.

His team are counting on him! So he goes, and takes the baby in the pram too. The barmaid puts poor Tarquin into the back room where it's quiet. When George's team wins he staggers home drunk with a mate, having forgotten all about the baby.

The mate reminds him... and George sprints out! He runs past Mildred, runs past the returning Fourmiles' all the way to the pub. He brings Tarquin home in time. No one is any the wiser, until the barmaid returns Tarquin's rattle. Mildred confronts George about taking a baby to a pub.

He stammers, "Um, he insisted on coming!"
8. Why does George hide in the attic in season 4?

Answer: He thinks he's an army deserter

One day George's brother Charlie pays a surprise visit. Charlie is a compulsive womanizer, and in fact he and Mildred were once lovers (but they make sure George is out of earshot when they reminisce!). Charlie suddenly recalls he has a letter that came for George 30 years ago - he'd forgotten all about it; he's used it as a bookmark all this time! George opens it and turns pale.

It's from the army; it's his 1949 call-up papers. This means he's a deserter! They might shoot him! He's got to go into hiding.

He behaves very strangely from that moment on. Mildred shakes her head; George has finally gone mad. Later, it turns out the letter is actually for his sister Gloria - who is also "G. Roper"!)
9. Mildred meets Steve McQueen whilst learning to drive.

Answer: False

Mildred tells George she's going to Keep-Fit classes with Ann (when in fact she's getting driving lessons) but George bumps into Ann at home (he's a bit slow, so doesn't click right away Mildred's been lying). Later he sees Mildred driving with a strange man.

At home he confronts her about it, but she ignores him. She sarcastically says she's waiting for Steve McQueen. Next week Mr. Bowles the driving instructor comes to pick up Mildred. George snaps, "I want a word with you, McQueen!" Mr. Bowles responds "Bowles" and George cries "Don't you take that attitude with me!" Later when George learns the truth, he protests, "Mildred ~I~ could have taught you to drive! I wouldn't have charged you as much."
10. What goes wrong when Jerry installs the Ropers' new shower?

Answer: All these things

It is one disaster after another. Jerry cuts the Ropers' water off, he breaks through next door's wall while Mr. Fourmile's in the bath (another huge bill to pay), and he tries to avoid Mildred when she comes looking for him (she's sobbing "Will I never learn?"). George has to take the old bathtub out of the shed into the living room.

He's happily playing with a rubber duck in his bath...when suddenly Mildred and Ann pop over with some friends. George ducks under but eventually has to come up for air... and a towel! Later Mildred groans, "Couldn't you have kept your head under till they were gone?! They were only here half an hour."
11. What hypocritical remark does Jeffrey Fourmile make in season 5?

Answer: Calls a visitor "a snob"

Jeffrey is so snooty he forbids his eldest son Tristram to play with his new friend Tommy. "Why not?" Jeffrey is concerned Tristram is picking up bad habits - for instance, "You've been dropping your H's!" His son protests, "I 'aven't!" and claps his hand over his mouth. Ann tries to make Jeffrey see he's being a bit of a snob, but as usual, to no avail. One day Tommy is invited around for lunch and his father comes instead. "Sorry, no offence mate, but I don't think our sons oughta play together." The father claims he thinks Tommy is picking up a lot of bad habits from Tristram. Spiffing, la-da-la, etc. Jeffrey exclaims, "You're a snob!" [The audience were in hysterics!]
12. What happens when George spends a night in a caravan?

Answer: The caravan's towed to a wreckers' yard

George buys an old tatty caravan and Jeffrey and the other neighbours buy it off him. They claim it lowers the tone of the street! George is happy... until he recalls his sister-in-law Ethel is coming to stay. He sleeps in the caravan that night to avoid her, unaware Jeffrey has arranged for it to be towed away in the morning! When George wakes up, he looks out the caravan window, and everything's changed! Where is he? He gets out and wanders round in some scrap-yard in his pajamas. "Oi! What's going on? You can't fool me... there was a row of houses here before I went to bed!" The foreman comes up and stammers "Now look, are you from that mental hospital up the road?" Offended, George snaps "Certainly not! Do I look like a doctor?" Then he sees Mildred and Jeffrey rushing into the yard, just as the caravan gets crushed! Mildred is sobbing "George!" and Jeffrey is stammering "Surely... surely that would have woken him?" Then they spot George. Mildred gives him a great big hug...and then shouts, "You should've been in that caravan!"
13. George's father passes away whilst staying with his son.

Answer: False

George's father has to leave the old family home - it is being demolished. Then the old folks' home complains about his obnoxious behaviour (George's father? Surely not) so he has to move in with his son. He disappears one morning and Mildred hurriedly rings George at the pub. "He's gone, George!" George misunderstands and hangs up, shocked.

When he staggers home, drunk and mourning, his father's back in bed and nearly asleep. George stands over the "corpse" and confesses to boyhood misdeeds e.g. putting frog's legs in his father's tea. Tearfully, George pulls a sheet over his father's face...and gets the fright of his life when the "corpse" tries to hit him!
14. What does Mildred accidentally donate to the church jumble-sale?

Answer: George's porn collection

For years sneaky George has been collecting gardening magazines, though he never does any gardening. In fact underneath each magazine is another, with naked women! Whenever Mildred walks into the room George quickly hides them. One day the vicar calls round for some jumble for his sale.

When George finds out Mildred has donated the box of magazines from under the stairs, he confesses everything. They panic and leap aboard George's motor-cycle to get the mags back in time! Inside the church Jeffrey their neighbour is helping out on the stand with their box.

He's already examined the contents, and enjoys torturing George by claiming the vicar's already bought the box. George eventually gets the box back, though it costs him five quid. Back home he discovers only gardening magazines inside! He angrily storms next door, Mildred in tow. Smirking, Jeffrey informs George he'd found the hidden magazines and burnt them, but then Ann storms in and wants him to explain magazines she's found hidden on top of their wardrobe! The blushing hypocrite hands them back to George...
15. What foolish thing does George say to Mildred in the final episode?

Answer: "I love you too, Beryl."

George has just parted company with his new lady-friend Beryl. He confesses he is really married, and now they probably won't stay in touch. Later in bed, Mildred whispers to her half-asleep husband, "I love you, George." George whispers back, "I love you too, Beryl." What?!? Sadly, no more episodes were made after that one. Yootha Joyce aka Mildred died due to excessive drinking.

They'd just finished filming the "George and Mildred" movie, but it wasn't as good as the TV series.
