Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen arrest Jim Gordon but release him upon seeing Oswald march into the GCPD. They later save Gordon from Victor Zsasz. Montoya is revealed to be Barbara's ex-lover.

The assassin was after Selina, upon learning she was the witness to the murder of the Waynes. While this is technically true, she lied about seeing the killer's face in order to avoid being sent upstate.

Jack Gruber, whose real name is Jack Buchinsky, orchestrated an Arkham breakout using a fellow inmate, Aaron Danzig, as a pawn as well as a psychiatrist named Dorothy, who is actually revealed later to be an inmate. Buchinsky in the papers, is referred to as the Electrocutioner, who is a minor recurring "Batman" villain.

On the assumption that Gordon would spare Oswald, the Penguin began working undercover for Falcone while pretending to work for Maroni.

Nygma is in charge of forensics. Despite his odd and peculiar nature he is quite good at his job. He is seen sneaking into the medical examiner's office and eventually setting up the examiner for dismissal. He also has a crush on Kristen Jingle which ends with him killing her.

Jerome Valeska is introduced as a nod, and possible origin of the Joker. Dick Grayson's parents also appear in this episode.

Carmine planned to retire "down South." He remains a recurring character throughout the show, helping Jim break out of prison in season 2. In season 4, Jim pays a visit to Miami to see him.
