Answer: A kidnapped woman who started committing crimes with her captor

She played a Patty Hearst type character who had been held captive by a man for several months. After the pair had killed people in a bar robbery, they tried to hold up a convenience store, and the store owner shot the man. Although she claimed she felt trapped and only participated in the crimes because she was afraid of her captor, she was still convicted of murder.

Her parents were rich and unloving and seemed to be ashamed of her.

Answer: A singer who killed her former benefactor

Linney played a woman who was lured to Japan to work for a man in his restaurant. She thought she'd be singing, but she was pressed into prostitution. When she declined, the businessman (allegedly) wouldn't give back her passport and basically kept her against her will.

After she got back to the US, she learned he was coming to New York and thought she was in danger, so she killed him. Aida Turturro, Tony's sister Janice on "The Sopranos," also guested in this episode.

Answer: A sassy, sharp tongued defense attorney

As defense attorney Lanie Stiedlitz, Stritch builds her defense on a feminist slant, and often defends women who she feels haven't gotten fair treatment. She defended the aforementioned interior designer slash hooker when the suspect was accused of murdering a client. She claimed the murder was actually self defense as he was trying to rape her client at the time.

Answer: James Earl Jones

Jones played a civil rights attorney willing to deal with his client's racist attitudes for the exposure of a high profile case. The DA's case was based on a victim's identification of the killer from a voice recording.

Answer: Cynthia Nixon

Wow, did she have bad 80's hair! Cynthia Nixon, aka Miranda in "SATC," played a woman who shot two men who were harassing her on the subway, killing one. It was a stressful episode as all the detectives and the DA's kept flip-flopping on whether she was justified in shooting the men.

Answer: Jane Kaczmarek from "Malcolm in the Middle"

The judge (who was proven guilty of extortion) accused Claire of fabricating charges against him to get back for her spurned sexual advances years ago when she was an intern. Although his story was false Claire still got censured. She left the DA's office in the midst of this scandal.

Answer: Mandy Patinkin

Patinkin won a Tony for his portrayal of revolution leader Che Guevara in "Evita" in 1980. His character on "L&O" was a creepy, narcissistic nutjob who tried to convince everyone that the government was plotting against him for his radical views. Seeing him and his smug, self-righteous lawyer get their comeuppance was very satisfying. Andrew McCarthy of 80's movie fame also guested in this episode, playing a defense attorney.

Answer: A social worker sleeping with the runaway girls in his care

In this episode, a nun running a shelter for displaced girls was accused of rape. It turned out that the whole story was a coverup for the fact that William H. Macy, a social worker at the shelter, was sleeping with its residents. He claimed it wasn't rape but the judge and jury thought differently.

Answer: A mother whose baby was shot and killed

In this episode, a notorious drug dealer (played by James McDaniel of "NYPD Blue" fame) hired a 14-year-old boy to kill an affluent white client who had stolen money. The boy couldn't read (a fact revealed in Ben Stone's questioning) and went to the wrong address, where everything went haywire.

He shot a 12-year-old boy and his little brother, killing the baby. Merkerson was the devastated mother, expressing her frustration after the dealer and mastermind was found guilty that her baby's real killer (the 14-year-old boy) would be back on the streets in 7 years.

She was so great in this episode it's no wonder they gave her a starring role two years later.

Answer: J.K. Simmons, who played psychiatrist Emil Skoda

He started playing Dr. Skoda the next year. This was a scary pair of episodes about a NYC subway bomber who also bombed a church in Baltimore. The bomber was convicted and he led them to the mastermind (Simmons) behind the crimes, a former CIA operative.
