Answer: 1957

"Have Gun Will Travel" premiered on Saturday evening, September 14, 1957, at 9:30PM and was followed by Gunsmoke.
2. Richard Boone portrayed Paladin. He derived his name from the first outlaw he tracked down in season one named "Smoke." What was Paladin's real name in the show?

Answer: He was known only as Paladin throughout the show's run.

Richard Boone's character's true identity was never revealed in any episode. Richard Boone was born Richard Allen Boone on June 18, 1917, in Los Angeles. He was actually a seventh generation nephew of Daniel Boone.
He portrayed both himself and "Smoke" in the first episode by shaving his mustache and putting silver tint in his hair.
3. Who sang the catchy theme song to "Have Gun Will Travel?"

Answer: Johnny Western

Boone co-wrote the theme song along with Johnny Western and "HGWT" co-producer, Sam Rolfe. It was performed only with Western singing backed by guitar. Johnny sang the theme songs to many other early television westerns. Johnny Western also performed with Johnny Cash's band in the 1960's.
4. "Have Gun Will Travel" was ranked fourth after the premier season and third the following two seasons. What writer wrote many of the episodes and went on to fame as a producer and writer of his own series later in the 1960s?

The show was extremely popular because it was termed the first "adult" western.

Answer: Carlton Hotel

Paladin lived the good life in the upscale Carlton Hotel. He was fond of gourmet food, fine wine, "fifty-eight cent" cigars, opera and playing chess.

Answer: 1870s

It was revealed that Paladin was a former Civil War Union officer just prior to relocating to San Francisco. He departed the hotel in his black outfit when he accepted a job. He would roam throughout the west which provided a variety of locales for his exploits.

Many up-and-coming actors such as Charles Bronson, James Drury, Buddy Ebsen and June Lockhart portrayed roles in various episodes.
7. What was the name of the bellhop in the hotel who also served as his valet and messenger?

Answer: Kim Chang

Because he was a bellhop, the character was usually called "Hey Boy." In the episode titled "Hey Boy's Revenge" aired on April 12, 1958, we learned his real name when his family settled in San Francisco. Kim Chang was portrayed by Kam Tong. There was actually a "Hey Girl" in the 1960-1961 season played by Lisa Lu while Kam Tong acted in the one-season series "Garland Touch."
8. What chess piece was on his calling card?

Answer: Knight

"A knight without armor in a savage land." He also had a silver knight on his holster. He carried a custom made, perfectly balanced colt revolver and concealed a derringer in his belt that frequently got him out of dangerous situations.
9. How much did Paladin quote as the fee for his services?

Answer: $1,000 plus expenses

In several episodes he quoted to prospective clients that his fee was $1,000, which included his expenses. He would frequently read newspapers from around the country and send his card to people he thought may need his services. Occasionally he would consider other offers.
10. How many seasons did "Have Gun Will Travel" air in the United States?

Answer: 6

It ran in continuous seasons through 1963. Richard Boone directed several dozen of the 225 episodes. The season after "Have Gun Will Travel" left the airways Boone went on to star in his own show, "The Richard Boone Show" for one season and subsequently starred as Hec Ramsey on another series. Richard Boone died in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1981 of throat cancer.

He was only 63 years old.
