Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From 1959 to 1963 came "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis". Money, girls and popularity consumed this teenager's time and thoughts. Dwayne Hickman starred as Dobie, Tuesday Weld was his sometimes girlfriend Thalia Meninger and his best friend was Maynard G. Krebs, played by what actor who would go on to a successful show about a group of castaways?

Answer: Bob Denver

Krebs was the original TV beatnik with an aversion to work or responsibility. His advice to Dobie, though initially ignored, usually turned out to be sound. The first year of the show also featured a very young Warren Beatty as Milton Armitage, the spoiled, rich nemesis who usually wound up with the girl.
2. This show was one of the very few successful efforts put forth by the DuMont network. It was shown daily at 7 p.m. for half an hour. It was the first sci-fi space "epic". The leads were played by Al Hodge and Don Hastings before he became a soap opera star. They patrolled the solar system, seeking out evil doers and usually defeating them. Can you name this show?

Answer: Captain Video and his Video Rangers

The scripts were sometimes incoherent, the props were likely to be made of cardboard and the principal villain, Dr. Pauli, dressed in a pinstriped 1930s zoot suit. A robot, I TOBOR, was featured, so called because a prop hand had stenciled his original title, ROBOT I, backward on the costume and it was a mirror image.

The show's producers were masters at merchandising all sorts of show related items, such as rings, guns and badges. The show did, mercifully, get better as time went on, and despite any shortcomings, it was tremendously popular with both kids and adults.
3. Jim Newton owned a ranch. He lost his wife and son in an auto accident and eventually adopted a young boy named Joey. Joey became fast friends with a horse whose name was the title of the show. Can you name this equine hero?

Answer: Fury

Jim Newton was played by Peter Graves, who went on the star in "Mission Impossible". The adoptee was played by Bobby Diamond. The show ran from 1955 to 1960, and made a serious attempt to teach youngsters what was acceptable behaviour and what wasn't. Like "Captain Video", the producers of this show were heavily into merchandising with products such as coloring books, puzzles, trading cards and board games.
4. "Hey, Jeannie" ran for two seasons from 1956 to 1958. The title character was a young Scottish girl who moved to New York to find work. She found a job as a waitress in a donut shop and friends in a cabbie and his wife. Who starred in this short lived comedy?

Answer: Jeannie Carson

At the beginning of the second season, the show was revamped, with Jeannie finding work as an airline stewardess. Long time character actor Alan Jenkins played her cab driver friend. Jeannie Carson was not successful in television, but made her mark on Broadway in "Finian's Rainbow".
5. "People's Choice" was a successful comedy that ran for three seasons from 1955 to 1958. Pat Breslin played Amanda Peoples, who was in love with a newly elected city councilman name Socrates Miller. Can you name the actor who played Soc Miller, then went on to a series about a Naval Officer named Henessy?

Answer: Jackie Cooper

The show was, in part, popular because of Socrates Miller's pet, a basset hound named Cleo. She was often used to help move the plot along by her thoughts being voiced by actor Mary Jane Croft. Cooper went on to play Editor Perry White in the first four "Superman" movies. Cleo was played by Bernadette, and was responsible for the basset hound breed's rise in popularity during the show's run.
6. Before "The Fugitive", David Janssen starred in a series called "Richard Diamond, Private Detective". He operated on wit, stealth and information supplied by his many contacts on the New York Police Department. Mary Tyler Moore also acted on the series, but in what unusual fashion?

Answer: Only her hands, feet and legs were shown

Moore played Sam, Diamond's receptionist. Her voice was used, but only her legs and hands were shown. Diamond drove a convertible which had, amazingly, a phone, very high tech for the period. The show ran for four seasons, from 1957 to 1960.
7. A British import, "Robin Hood", produced by ITV, made its debut in 1955. It was moralistic more than being adventurous, and starred Richard Greene as Robin. The show was notable for using the same actors over and over in different roles and for its writing talent. What was unusual about the writers?

Answer: They had been blacklisted by a house committee

Ring Lardner Jr. and Ian Hunter had been blacklisted by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee and couldn't work in Hollywood. They moved to England, where they were hired by the show's producers. When informed that they couldn't show the work on American TV, the producers kept the writers, but the credits at the end of the show used pseudonyms instead of their real names. Note, one actor, Paul Eddington, appeared in 40 episodes, playing 20 different roles.
8. "Circus Boy" ran for two seasons, beginning in 1956. It was about a young boy with the circus whose parents had been killed doing a trapeze act. The other performers looked after him. It starred Guinn "Big Boy" Williams and Noah Beery Jr. Which of these, who went on to play a Monkee, played Circus Boy?

Answer: Micky Dolenz

Along with the elephant he was helping to care for, Circus Boy was able to bring a naive wisdom to solving the problems that often confronted the circus folk. Beery, of course, went on the co star as Rocky Rockford in "The Rockford Files". Guinn Williams had a long and successful acting career in movies and was a premier polo player.
9. "Mr Adams and Eve" ran from 1957 to 1958. It was about a married couple who were in show business and got along much better on screen than off. It starred Howard Duff and his real life wife, who later became a respected movie and television director. Who was she?

Answer: Ida Lupino

Ida Lupino was twice nominated for an Emmy while working on this series. She and Duff were married for over 30 years. Patrick Wayne also appeared as "a neighborhood teenager".
10. "Harbor Master" was a short lived series about a ship's captain who often became embroiled in crime solving. The actor who played captain David Scott had appeared in well over 100 movies and would go on to play Pat Garrett opposite Clu Gulager's Billy the Kid in a 1960 series. Can you name him?

Answer: Barry Sullivan

Sullivan was a veteran actor who had played Leslie Charteris' "The Saint" on radio. "Harbor Master" lasted one season, but deserved a better fate. Paul Burke of "12 O'clock High" played his partner.
