Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Season 1- When the series premiered, what was Frank Underwood's political position?

Answer: Majority Whip

Francis 'Frank' Underwood wanted to become more than what he was, which was Majority Whip for the DNC. It was basically his job to make sure his Democrats voted in the ways the whole party preferred. Kevin Spacey expertly played the part of Underwood, and would address the viewing audiences directly at times.

He tried to quietly campaign for Secretary of State, and later found out why he lost out on that role. Then, he went after the Vice Presidency.
2. Season 1- Where did Claire Underwood work in the first season?

Answer: Clean Water Initiative

She was head of that organization, and wanted to expand clean water efforts onto a global scale. In season one, her marriage to Frank was gently teased out, and the audience was given glimpses into their partnership. She and Frank both worked with (and against) a company called SanCorp, and their liaison was a lobbyist named Remy Danton. SanCorp dealt in natural gas, which would be how Frank tried to gather help from Remy in the season one finale. Remy turned to the best pal and advisor to the President of SanCorp, Raymond Tusk. Tusk and Underwood came to an understanding, and Tusk recommended him to the President to be the next Vice President. Claire resigned her position in the season two premier.

Mahershala Ali played Remy. He was also in the USA Network series "The 4400".
3. Season 1- Kate Mara played a reporter who had an affair with Frank Underwood in season one. Was that reporter's name?

Answer: Zoe Barnes

They used each other to further their own agendas, and Zoe found out Frank's agenda had been very dark and dangerous. It led to the death of Pennsylvania congressman Peter Russo, and the disappearance of blogger Roy Kapeniak. The season closed on Frank accepting the offer to be the new Vice President and Doug Stamper trying to find out how much Zoe actually knew about Peter Russo.

Tess Mercer was a reporter on "Smallville", and Trudy Monk was one on "Monk". Hayden McClaine was Kate Mara's character on "American Horror Story".
4. Season 2- Frank murdered the reporter he was having an affair with in the season two premier. How did she die?

Answer: She was run over by a subway train

Frank tried to smooth things over with Zoe to avoid him being linked to Peter Russo's murder. At the end of the season two premier, Zoe met him down in the subway near a partitioned off area where he could not be seen. After smoothly talking her into erasing all of their communications from her cellphone, he walked off. When she hurried after him, he grabbed her and shoved her in front of an oncoming train. Of course, I am sure Frank knew the moment he met her, he'd eventually have to be rid of her in some awful fashion. In fact, he warned her of that exact thing right in the beginning.

Her death set her boyfriend and fellow reporter, Lucas Goodwin, on a crusade to get Frank Underwood. He discovered how to access the "deep web" (also called the dark web), to solicit a hacker who could access Frank and Zoe's phone history. Sebastian Arcelus played Lucas.
5. Season 2- Reporter Lucas Goodwin accepted a plea deal for his crime of cyber terrorism.

Answer: True

This was in "Chapter 19". Lucas had become desperate to prove that Vice President Underwood had killed Zoe. He used the deep web to solicit a hacker, and was contacted by a man named Gavin (actor Jimmi Simpson). Gavin was under the thumb of the FBI, and used by Frank and Doug to "help" Lucas into a felony. He was facing as much as 35 years, but offered a seven year sentence to say he was guilty. He was guilty, but before he agreed to the sentence, he tried to get his former boss Tom Hammerschmidt to expose Underwood. Tom was unable to get anything concrete he could print to help Lucas, and Janine Skorsky lied in her statement to protect herself from prosecution. When Janine explained, in person, to Lucas about why she'd lied, he said, "he's going to get away with it, isn't he?" Janine nodded sadly and said, "yes he is".

Sebastian Arcelus gave an amazing performance as Lucas Goodwin as the character descended into desperation. He was Jay Whitmanon the series "Madam Secretary". Constance Zimmer played Janine. She was also on "Joan of Arcadia", "Boston Legal", and "Entourage". Boris McGiver played Tom. He was on "Person of Interest" and "Boardwalk Empire".
6. Season 2- What was the name of the Secret Service agent who had a sexual encounter with Frank and Claire?

Answer: Edward Meechum

In "Chapter 24", Claire arranged a moment for them to have a sexual encounter with their trusted Secret Service agent, Edward Meechum. He wasn't the only agent they had on their service, but he was their favorite. She dropped a glass in her kitchen and it broke. He helped her pick up the pieces and cut himself. She offered to bandage him and then plied him with Bourbon. When Frank came home, Edward and Claire were laughing happily. It wasn't long before Claire kissed Edward's hand, then he kissed her neck, then he kissed Frank's lips. The scene was intensely creepy, watching Claire and Frank speak to each other without words and manipulate yet another person in their life.

Seth Grayson was the press secretary for Frank, and worked alongside Doug Stamper solving all kinds of interesting problems in season two. Nathan Darrow played Meechum.
7. Season 2- Which of these did *not* happen in the season two finale?

Answer: Claire announced she had terminal cancer

During season two Claire did reveal to America that she'd had an abortion and been raped in college by a man who became a military general. She was able to link the two events together, though they had no connection. She privately admitted to Connor, the press secretary at the time, that she'd had three abortions in total. Two of those had been when she was a teenager.

Also in the finale, Rachel Posner attacked Doug Stamper with a rock, leaving him in the woods. She knew she was probably going to be killed by him and ran away. When he chased her, she waited until she had the chance to attack. Gavin, the hacker who'd help incarcerate Lucas Goodwin, told Doug he knew about Rachel. The season ended without knowing if Doug was alive or dead. Walker resigned his position after a vote to start impeachment, that left Frank as POTUS and Xander Feng back at the mercy of Frank and Catherine Durant. They sent him back to China, where he'd most likely be executed.

Terry Chen played Feng.
8. Season 3- What was the name of the program Frank wanted to start to help people find jobs?

Answer: America Works

He wanted to do away with entitlements, which meant do away with social security and medicare. I ask "how can something be an entitlement if the money came out of the American people's checks to pay for it"? He knew it would be an uphill battle, but in case he did not get elected president in 2016, he wanted to make a mark that was remembered.

He use FEMA money to get the program started in Washington D.C. because he had the mayor declare it (joblessness) a national disaster. D.C. had no one but the mayor to represent it, so congress wasn't needed.

Then, when a hurricane posed a serious threat, Frank had to recall the money for America Works.
9. Season 3- Who was running against Frank to be the 2016 Democratic nominee?

Answer: Heather Dunbar

Frank wanted Heather to take the supreme court seat of Judge Roberts, as he was suffering from Alzheimer's and was planning to step down. Heather declined that, even though it would be a life long appointment. Instead, she ran for the Democratic nominee. Frank did not have the backing of the DNC, as no one trusted him. He convinced Jackie Sharpe, who was also running to be the Democratic presidential nominee, to be his "pitbill" against Heather. The plan was for Jackie to suspend her campaign, back Frank, and then become his running mate. Instead, Jackie backed Heather. Heather asked nothing of Jackie, and Frank demanded she fall in line. That convinced Jackie to abandon her plan with Frank.

Remy Danton served as Frank's Chief of Staff, until he finally had enough as well and quit. Doug took the position after Remy quit. Reporter Kate Baldwin was played by Kim Dickens, who went on to play Madison on "Fear The Walking Dead".
10. Season 3- Which region of the world was a major topic in season three?

Answer: Jordan Valley

Claire had been appointed (by Frank) as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations after she failed to get appointed by the usual means. She wanted to create a peace treaty in the Jordan Valley to stave off attacks by Israel and Palestine. Unfortunately, the Jordan Valley was close to Russia as well, so there was a lot of back and forth between Claire, Frank, and Soviet president Victor Petrov.

After a disastrous situation where Claire was manipulated by a Russian diplomat, Petrov demanded Frank dismiss her as ambassador. Claire resigned her position, and felt more and more like the junior partner in her marriage.

The tension between she and Frank grew deeper and more dangerous as the season wore on, and she left Frank in the season three finale.
11. Season 3- Did Doug kill Rachel Posner?

Answer: Yes

Over the course of season three, Doug continued to heal from the aftermath of Rachel's attack on him in the season two finale. He healed well, but it took a long time, and he was left with two things. One, he wanted to prove himself useful to Frank, and two, he wanted to put an end to the threat Rachel represented.

It never seemed that Doug wanted any kind of revenge on Rachel for hitting him in the head and leaving him for dead. He just wanted to remove her, as had been his job. He'd failed to protect Frank by failing to do his job.

He cared for Rachel, and that had been his undoing. He was sorry and ashamed of that, which caused him to fall off the wagon a couple of times. He used Gavin to locate Rachel in New Mexico. When he caught up with her, she actually talked him out of killing her. But, in the end, his loyalty to Frank mattered more, and he did kill her and bury her out in the desert.
12. Season 4- Whose mother died after a battle against cancer?

Answer: Claire's

Claire and her mother had been apart for years, but when Claire left Frank she went back to her mother's house in Dallas. It wasn't very long before she found out that her mother had been battling cancer for a few years, and was nearing the end of that battle. Of course, Claire had to strong arm a dying woman in the process. She threatened to sell the acreage because it was in her name, while the house itself had been left to her mother when Claire's father died.

Ellen Burstyn played her mother, Elizabeth Hale.
13. Season 4- What was the name of the charismatic New York governor running on the 2016 Republican presidential ticket?

Answer: William Conway

The Conways presented themselves as the ideal American family, though Hannah Conway was from England. William had been a military pilot, and told a story of how he enlisted just hours after the events on September 11, 2001. That story turned out to be true, but he revealed to Frank in 2012 that he actually used the events of that day because he knew the story of his enlistment would help in his political future.

All of the answer choices are characters played by actor Joel Kinnaman.
14. Season 4- Who was *not* shot the day Lucas Goodwin aimed a gun at President Underwood?

Answer: Doug Stamper

Lucas, who'd been released from prison into the Witness Protection Program, was still obsessed with getting the truth out about President Underwood. He risked everything to reach out to Janine Skorsky, Tom Hammerschmidt, and Heather Dunbar. When Heather turned down his story, Lucas lost all hope.

He went to one of Frank's campaigning locations and shot him. He also shot Meechum, who died, but not before Meechum shot and killed Lucas. This lead to Frank almost dying himself because he needed a liver transplant.

The need for a liver caused Doug to coerce the head of Health Services to bump Frank from number two to number one on the transplant list, effectively killing a man named Anthony Moretti.
15. Season 4- Claire Underwood was ultimately chosen to be Frank's Vice Presidential running mate for the 2016 election.

Answer: True

Though season four saw this unscrupulous pair go through rocky moments, they regained focus after his near death experience. Frank went through several potential candidates, but Claire made it clear that to go forward together, she required more power. So, Frank called for an open convention, where delegates got to vote on his running mate instead of him choosing for himself. This almost backfired when delegates began choosing Cathy Durant for President, but they were able to nip Cathy in the bud. Claire was chosen. At the end of the season, Tom Hammerschmidt and "The Herald" released an article comprised of bullet points outlining Frank's corrupt rise to power. This was on the heels of American Islamic terrorists taking a family of three hostage in order to get their leader, Yusuf Al Ahmadi, out of prison. The Underwoods were almost beaten when they realized that instead of winning people over, they could just scare them instead.

Frank: "We don't submit to terror. We make the terror."

Farshad Farahat played Yusef, leader of ICO (Islamic Caliphate Organization), but who was really a former political head in Iraq. Claire almost talked him into helping save the Miller family. In the end, Melissa and Caroline survived, but James Miller was executed and it was streamed onto Twitter.
