Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tywin Lannister
Answer: A bathroom arrow
Lord of Casterly Rock, Shield of Lannisport and Warden of the West, the ruthless Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) sat on the bathroom "throne" as his son "the imp" Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) confronted and then killed him with a bow and arrow.
In Westeros to kill your father is unforgivable, so Tyrion had to flee and go across the Narrow Sea to Essos.
Cersei Lannister's (Lena Headey) hatred for her little brother intensified after Tyrion murdered their father. She says it "left us open" to attack from outsiders, such as those in Dorne who gave her daughter a poison kiss of death.
2. Shae
Answer: Strangled by her lion
Shae (Sibel Kekilli) began her connection with Tyrion Lannister in season one, as his "whore", but they, at least Tyrion, fell in love. Tyrion defied his family by bringing her home to King's Landing where he hid her in plain sight as Sansa's handmaiden. Shae called Tyrion "my lion", since the lion is the Lannister family sigil. Unfortunately in season 4 Shae betrays Tyrion, and when he finds her in another lion's bed--his father Tywin--and he sees she is wearing Tywin's gold Chain of Office, Tyrion strangles her to death with it.
There was an uproar in social media, where many said Shae is a gold-digger who used Tyrion. Sibel Kekilli said publicly that as she played her, Shae did love Tyrion, but became jealous as Tyrion and Sansa grew close.
3. Petyr Baelish
Answer: Throat neatly cut
Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish (Aidan Gillen), Master of Coin, Lord of Harrenhal, Lord Protector of the Vale, connives his way to power from season 1 to season 7, bringing down Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), Jon and Lysa Arryn, and King Joffrey, implicating Tyrion Lannister in the crippling of Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), and instrumental in starting the War of the Five Kings. But when he attempts to pit Arya and Sansa Stark (Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner) against each another, they are onto him, and Arya, a trained assassin, slices open his throat.
Arya executed Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) as efficiently, for orchestrating the Red Wedding massacre, where they cut her mother's throat and murdered her brother.
Fans could buy a "Don't Kill Sean Bean" tee-shirt, because the beloved Lord Ned Stark is beheaded early in season one, upsetting many viewers. Actor Sean Bean characters are often killed off.
4. Lysa Arryn
Answer: Tossed out the Moon Door
Lysa Arryn (Kate Dickie) is seduced and manipulated by Petyr Baelish, who convinces her to poison her husband Jon Arryn (John Standing), the Hand of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), then write a letter implicating the Lannisters. Living at the Eyrie, Lysa is unhinged, and attempts to have Tyrion Lannister killed. She is jealous of Sansa Stark and tries to kill her, but Baelish shoves Lysa out the Moon Door--she falls far to her death in the valley below.
Sansa puts on an act, lying for Baelish, convincing everyone it was suicide. To deliberately play the "game" is a turning point for Sansa. She has learned much from the cunning Baelish and the court of King's Landing.
5. Viserion
Answer: Night King's Spear
The dragon Viserion (played by a large machine, digital and visual effects, drone fly-overs and composite sounds) was cream and gold with orange on his wings, one of three dragons born of fire to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). He allowed Daenerys to raise and ride him although she was often reminded he was a powerful and free creature. Season 7 Daenerys took all three dragons north of the Wall to save Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his team, who were surrounded by wights. The Night King (Vladimir Furdik) shocked us all by thrusting an icy spear into the sky which pierced Viserion, causing him to crash dead into the freezing water below.
Things got worse from there.
Vladimir Furdik is a stunt man as well as an actor. He also played a White Walker Jon Snow killed in season five. Vladimir conveyed his chilling characters without saying a single word.
6. Joffrey Baratheon
Answer: Rather hideously poisoned
King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) died horribly at his wedding feast, soon after drinking wine poisoned with "the strangler", a deadly poison hidden in the necklace of Sansa Stark.
His mother Cersei pointed the finger at Tyrion, while many believed Sansa Stark did it, since Littlefinger secreted her away as Joffrey lay gasping and choking, clawing at his neck, blood pouring from his nostrils.
In season 7 the Dowager Lady of Highgarden, Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), the "Queen of Thorns", confesses to Jaime. She wasn't going to let her granddaughter "marry that beast". Olenna died by painless poison Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) made her drink. She said nothing about her accomplice, "Littlefinger" Baelish.
7. Ramsay Bolton
Answer: His starving hounds
The insanely vicious "bastard" Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) murdered his father and his unborn sibling, and tortured Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen). He decimated the army of Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) by sneak attack. He killed Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson) in a game that made Jon Snow feel horrified and helpless.
Bolton had starved his hunting hounds so they would attack and kill the victim of his choice. When opportunity arose, Sansa set his own starving dogs upon Ramsay. Thank goodness the results were not shown.
This was another turning point in Sansa's previously naive and sometimes peevish character. Due to all the cruelty and deception she'd experienced, she'd became a hardened and formidable enemy, capable of such a deed.
8. King-Beyond-the-Wall
Answer: Burned at the stake
Mance Rayder (Ciaran Hinds) deserted the Night's Watch and became the King-Beyond-the-Wall, uniting the wildlings against the advance of the White Walkers, and attacking the Night's Watch and nearby villages. Mance is captured by Stannis Baratheon, who demands he bend the knee or be burned at the stake. As Mance burns, Jon Snow compassionately shoots him with an arrow to quickly end his suffering.
Likewise burned at the stake was the sweet daughter of Stannis Baratheon, Shireen, (Kerry Ingram), murdered by Melisandre (Carice van Houten) for the "Lord of Light". And the witch who caused the demise of Khal Drogo and his unborn child. She was tied to Drogo's funeral pyre and burned alive by Daenerys.
9. Direwolf Summer
Answer: Destroyed by wights
The five Starks and Jon Snow "the bastard" each rescued and raised one of six wild direwolves found on the Stark property in season one. Summer, Bran Stark's companion, saved him from a stabbing after his fall from the Winterfell tower. From his bed the comatose Bran learned to warg (enter and experience life from within the wolf) into Summer. Summer was mauled to death along with Hodor, defending Bran from the hordes of wights that entered the cave of the Three-eyed Raven (season six).
Lady (Sansa's gentle, pretty girl) died because of Joffrey Lannister. Grey Wind (Robb's) was killed at the Red Wedding by the Freys. Shaggydog (Rickon's) was beheaded by Ramsay Bolton. Arya saw her direwolf Nymeria with a wolf pack in the forest wilderness. After their travels north of the Wall and fighting together in wars, Jon Snow asked Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) in season eight, episode 4, to take Ghost home to the "real north", while Jon headed south for the battle at King's Landing.
10. Khal Drogo
Answer: Suffocated with a pillow
Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa), warlord of the Dothraki warriors of Essos, made his debut in season 1, episode 1, "Winter is Coming" (2011) when he accepts the young bride Daenerys Targaryen in trade for a promise to her brother prince Viserys (Harry Lloyd). Drogo is wounded, it festers, and when Daenerys demands the treating witch Mirri Maz Durr (Mia Soteriou) cast a spell to save his life, he is healed, but catatonic. Daenerys realizes he is never going to wake up, so she smothers Drogo, her "sun and stars", to death with a pillow.
Three dragons and the Mother of Dragons are born in the fires of his funeral pyre. Some say this was "blood" magic, where one gains life when another (here the witch) dies. Those who live via blood magic may be cursed. It is known.
