Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jorah Mormont
Answer: Saved Dany; died
Daenerys lands Drogon to save Aegon/Jon, but Drogon is covered with wights and must rise to the sky to shake them off. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) falls into the midst of the wights.
Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) heard the roar of Drogon and runs toward the sound, beheading a wight about to attack Dany. Jorah races her to higher ground. Using the Valyrian steel sword "Heartsbane" given to him by Samwell, Jorah defends her even after he is badly wounded. Just as he is stabbed deeply and it seems she is doomed, all wights are suddenly de-animated, crashing to the ground. Seeing this Jorah falls to his knees, tries to say something to Dany, and dies. Drogon lands and shields them with his wings, as Daenerys cries over the body of her courageous advisor and friend. I cried too. I had such a crush on Jorah. Sniff.
2. Lyanna Mormont
Answer: Killed giant; died
Tiny Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) insists on fighting although Jorah reminds her she is the future of House Mormont. A giant wight smashes fighters left and right, wounding Lyanna. Incredibly she gets up and charges. The giant grabs her but as it is squeezing her to death, she thrusts a dragon glass dagger into its eye, killing it. Whoa! That girl knows no fear. Both crash to the ground, dead.
The noble House of Mormont, "Here We Stand", is no more. Lyanna was named after Aegon/Jon's mother Lyanna Stark. Her powerful demeanor and staunch loyalty made her a much beloved character of the show. Incredibly, HBO's "Game of Thrones" was Bella Ramsey's first credited acting role. She is just 15 years old in season eight (born September, 2003).
The massive beast she slayed was played by a robotic claw machine, which held Bella 20 feet in the air and shook her a bit. Because Bella is so petite the stuntmen decided to surround her on set so she couldn't be accidentally trampled by all the extras fighting and running about. Thus on screen the space around her is clear.
3. Melisandre
Answer: Lit trenches; became dust
A lone cloaked rider appears mysteriously from the darkness. Melisandre (Carice van Houten) tells Ser Mormont to command the Dothraki to raise their swords. When they do, she speaks a spell and their swords light on fire. As they gallop into the darkness on horseback, fire against ice, Daenerys and Aegon/Jon look on from high above. It's an incredible scene.
Dreadfully, their lights are extinguished, screams are heard, and some come running back. Another phase of defense is a trench fire, but the wood is too icy to light. The Red Priestess walks out to the front line, kneels, and speaks a spell, sheer terror in her eyes as Unsullied protect her from attacking wights. The "Lord of Light" hears her and the trenches burst into flame. For a time Winterfell is shielded by a ring of fire.
One more time Melisandre plays a central role. Beric, Sandor "the Hound" and Arya burst into a room, locking the ghoulish wights out. Melisandre is already there. Arya says, "I know you. You said I'd shut many eyes forever..." Melisandre replies, "Brown eyes. Green eyes. And BLUE eyes". She stares into Arya's face until she sees that Arya understands. "What do we say to the god of Death?" Arya answers, "Not today". Arya runs from the room.
When the Battle of Winterfell is over and the Night King is broken, Melisandre walks silently out into the snow beyond Winterfell, removes and drops the necklace that maintains her witchy youth, and then ages, becomes a skeleton, and collapses into dust. The Red Woman's purpose has been served.
4. Daenerys Targaryen
Answer: Saved Aegon
Aegon/Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is in the sky, battling with the Night King (Vladmir Furdik) on dragons, when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) uses Drogon to shove the Night King off his ride. Aegon crash-lands Rhaegal and then watches anxiously as Daenerys commands Drogon to torch the Night King. Flames roar, but when they clear, the Night King stands untouched, smiling.
Aegon chases the King through the battlefield on foot. But wait, the Night King turns and slowly lifts his arms, rising the dead, surrounding Aegon with his former comrades, now vicious wights. Aegon has no chance.
Daenerys arrives on Drogon, scorching the wights with fire. Aegon yells, "Run!" as he turns back to single-minded pursuit of the Night King. Aegon enters the ruins of Winterfell, passing his comrades and friends, each of them bloodied and swarmed by wights, in a battle they are losing. He needs to make it to the godswood. Meanwhile Daenerys has saved Aegon, but finds herself in trouble.
5. Beric Dondarrion
Answer: Saved Arya; died, again
From high on the battlements Arya (Maisie Williams) saves Sandor "the Hound" (Rory McCann) with a well-placed arrow, but then she is trapped in a room with a dozen or so wights. By using her silent water dance skills she escapes the room, but hoards of other wights chase her. Sandor is below, in a daze, shouting at Beric, "We're fighting death! We can't beat death!" Ser Beric the "Lightning Lord" (Richard Dormer) points at Arya up above, "Tell HER that!" Seeing his friend in trouble revives Sandor and he and Beric go looking for her. She bursts through a door, screaming and underneath a wight, which Beric kills with his fire sword. Sandor grabs her and runs, while Beric uses himself as a shield to give Sandor and Arya time to get away. He is bitten and stabbed multiple times.
Beric stumbles into a safe room with Arya and Sandor. Beric has died repeatedly in "Game of Thrones", brought back to life again and again through the "Lord of Light". This time, he is gone.
To our surprise the Red Woman Melisandre is in the room. She says quietly, "The Lord brought him back for a purpose. Now, that purpose has been served". It was Beric who told Aegon/Jon that killing the Night King might destroy the entire White Walker army. So in that way, and stirring Sandor to action, giving his life for Arya, Ser Beric is a great hero indeed.
6. Theon Greyjoy
Answer: Defended 3-Eyed Raven; died
Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) and his Ironborn swore to guard Bran Stark/Three-Eyed Raven (Isaac Hempstead Wright) as he lures the Night King into the godswood. Wights picked off the Ironborn one by one until only Theon is left to guard Bran. When Theon is out of arrows, he fights with his bow, and then with a spear.
As the Night King enters the godswood Three-Eyed Raven says to Theon, soft and clear, "Theon. You are a good man. Thank you". Theon's shamed and tortured heart needed to hear that. As the Night King steps into the clearing, Theon alone, sworn to defend Bran with his life, charges.
But he is impaled, and dies.
7. Arya Stark
Answer: Breaks the Night King
The icy Night King (Vladmir Furdik) has found and now stands in front of Bran the Three-Eyed Raven (Isaac Hempstead Wright) in the godswood. Their eyes meet calmly. Then the expression in Bran's eyes changes slightly. I think that Bran has seen the Night King's future and knows that in an instant, he dies. The Night King sees Bran's face change, but he is puzzled by it. It was masterful acting, the ever-so-slight expression shift, in both their faces.
The Night King reaches for a weapon strapped to his back, in order to kill Three-Eyed Raven. Now the ferocious Arya Stark is high in the air behind the Night King, dagger in hand! He whirls and grabs her by the throat. She drops her dagger. Too late he sees it fall. She snags it with her other hand, and thrusts it into the exposed abdomen of the Night King. Being ice, he shatters into pieces. All the White Walkers burst into ice shards. Without their magical leader's Force, the White Walker army of wights drop, actually and truly dead. There will be no Long Night void of men. Winter was Here. Now, it is gone. It seems Arya is the Prince That Was Promised.
8. Unsullied
Answer: Protected the Retreat
Unsullied, fantastic! In unwavering formation they man the front line against thousands of Undead wights. When their lines are broken by the onslaught, they snap into new formation. The Unsullied keep Melisandre safe while she lights the trenches. When the fighters are overwhelmed by the cold winds and the sheer numbers of wights, and the call to "Fall Back!" is commanded, the Unsullied hear their commander Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) yell, "Protect the retreat! Stand your ground!" The Unsullied block the wights outside Winterfell, so that everyone else can race behind the blockade, back into the castle. What astounding bravery and discipline.
Melisandre greeted Grey Worm in the traditional High Valyrian, "Valar morghulis" which means, "All men must die". He answered traditionally, "All men must serve".
9. Saved Samwell, died
Answer: Dolorous Edd
Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) was supposed to go hide in the crypts, but although he is not strong enough to wield a sword he sneaks away from the castle to join the fighters. He is after all a sworn member of the Night's Watch, one of only three left alive, promised to defend the realms of Men.
While he fights fiercely from the battlements, during the onslaught he is shoved down to the ground by crowds of wights. The lord Commander of the Night's Watch Dolorous Edd (Ben Crompton) grabs him, yelling, "Get up!" and kills the wights attacking Sam. Horribly, Edd is impaled from behind, and dies. Now his watch has ended.
(Jorah Mormont also saves Sam during this battle. I transposed this question so you couldn't match Jorah with Sam. Jorah gave his life defending Daenerys).
10. Tyrion Lannister
Answer: Kept Sansa safe
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) was ordered into the "safe" crypts by Queen Daenerys. He hates being there, unable to see what's going on, feeling helpless. "If we were up there we might see something everyone else is missing. Something that makes a difference", he said, knowing he did exactly that at the Battle of the Blackwater.
When the Night King raises the dead, Starks in the crypts are animated and burst through their graves to attack. Tyrion gets Sansa (Sophie Turner) behind a large block of stone, where he holds her eyes to reassure and comfort her; kisses her hand, and emotionally shields her from the terrors around them.
He then leads her to join others who have evaded the dead, such as Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Varys (Conleth Hill).
