Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Almost every classic TV afficienado knows that the painting,"Boy With A Broom", hung on the left-hand wall of the foyer of Darrin and Samantha Stevens' house on "Bewitched". But in the first season of the show, another, more kitschy item held that place of honor. What was it?

Answer: A table candelabra

In the first season of "Bewtiched", the famous "Boy With A Broom" painting was nowhere in sight. Instead, an oversize wooden table candelabra stood on the table in the left-hand corner of the Stevens' foyer, playing, as the "Broom" painting did later, on the "witchiness" of the lady of the house.
2. The most famous piece of furniture in Rob and Laura Petrie's living room was, of course, that pesky hassock that Rob (aka Dick Van Dyke) kept tripping over. But at the office, another kitschy item sat on the fictional comedy writer's desk for the entire five year run of the show. What was it?

Answer: A Magic Eight-Ball

Only once, in my memory, did Rob actually shake the Magic Eight-Ball in search of an answer to a pressing question. Nevertheless, it was a kitschy item that reigned supreme on the set of one of the best TV sitcoms of all time.
3. Even an occasional watcher of "The Golden Girls" TV show couldn't help but notice Blanche's kitschy taste when it came to bedroom decor. What was the motif in the bedroom of this most lascivious of the "girls"?

Answer: Green ferns painted on the wall behind her bed

For all of the supposed sexual escapades associated with the character of Blanche, the painted fern motif in her bedroom is hardly what one could call "seductive". Mostly, it just looks like a poor woman's version of Elvis Presley's jungle room at Graceland.
4. Sticking for another moment with "The Golden Girls", what other very kitschy item graced the wall in the kitchen of their shared abode for all but the first year of the show's seven year run?

Answer: Artificial vegetables connected together on a plastic vine

For the first year of the show, innocuous yellow and white stove mitts hung on the kitchen wall beside the table where the girls ate their cheesecake. By the second year, the oven mitts had been replaced by more noticeable, very kitschy, plastic garlic and bell peppers strung together on a fake vine.
5. For all of her inate classiness,TV sitcom queen Mary Richards was still a victim of kitschiness when it came to decorating her apartments. What kitschy item hung on the wall of both of the apartments in which she lived during the course of the show?

Answer: An oversize, wooden "M"

When Mary moved to her new apartment in the next to last season of the show, the gang from the office showed up to take her out for a celebratory dinner. Mary quietly asked them to wait for her downstairs, then, as soon as they had gone, hung her beloved "M" on the wall to symbolize her connection to the new digs.
6. Even Monica of "Friends", with a huge decorating budget alloted to fill a make-believe apartment that no real New York City chef could ever afford to live in, couldn't escape the insidious reach of kitsch. What charmingly kitschy item originally stood on top of the refrigerator in her kitchen and was later moved to the counter?

Answer: A ceramic clock with "Cookie Time" in black letters

In a recent TV interview, Matthew Perry said that the only item he took from the set of Monica's apartment was the ceramic clock that said "Cookie Time" on it. He gave it to Lisa Kudrow, he explained, because on the very first day of shooting, when he asked her the time, she pointed to it, not realizing that it wasn't a real clock.
7. Jerry Seinfeld was no stranger to kitsch during the run of his celebrated epnoymous TV show. What potentially useful, but very kistchy item hung on the side of his refrigerator for the entire run of the show?

Answer: An oven mitt with a cat face on it

Maybe I missed a show or two, but I never once saw Jerry, or anyone else in the cast, actually use the cat face oven mitt while cooking, Then again, I never saw any of them cook anything in the apartment. Kramer took care of all that while showering, it seems.
8. Let's move on to a show with a less mainstream following. One of the most underrated shows on TV, and one of the best written, was, arguably, "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". If you've ever seen the show, you can't have missed the extremely kitschy item that stood on a shelf in the Summers' kitchen for the entire run of the series. Can you name it?

Answer: A white cow creamer

Cow creamers are amazingly ubiquitous items. An exact replica of the one on "Buffy" can be seen in the Kevin Bacon eighties movie, "She's Having A Baby", and, for that matter, in my very own kitchen--a three dollar purchase from my local Wal-Mart.
9. The aura of kitsch isn't neccessarily limited to the decorative items found in one's home. It can also extend to the food and beverages stored and ingested therein. What undeniably kitschy beverage was Penny Marshall's character always craving on "Laverne And Shirley'?

Answer: Milk and Pepsi

Milk and Pepsi was Laverne's favorite drink, even on those frequent occasions when she and Shirley were trying to pass themselves off as sophisticates in a local "highbrow" restaurant or club.
10. Archie Bunker was, without a doubt, the most socially challenged TV character of all time. Even so, he occasionally allowed his kitschy heart to show through the bluster. After accidentally-on-purpose breaking a statue of two naked lovers that belonged to Mike and Gloria, he tried to make amends by giving them a tasteless statue of what?

Answer: A generic "native" woman with a fish on her head

Presented with the statue, Gloria stares blankly at it for a moment, then looks up at her father and asks, "Why does she have a fish on her head?" Archie has no idea, of course, but, unlike the naked lovers, the statue fits in perfectly with the Bunkers' Queens working class decor.
