Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Grobmans return from their country home, why is Judge Grobman the one who parks the car?

Answer: so Walter can carry groceries in with the doorman's help

Later, we learn from the doorman that never in the many years the couple went to the country house did Judge Grobman park the car instead of Mr. Grobman.

In the "Law & Order: UK" version of this episode, which is titled "Denial," they substituted a large painting for the groceries the husband carried in.
2. Walter and Rudy, the doorman, are in the lobby when they hear gunshots. They race to the garage to find Walter's wife, Judge Grobman, bleeding on the ground and her car missing. What was the make of the car?

Answer: Jaguar

When detectives Briscoe and Green arrive, they learn the couple's Jaguar is missing. They soon learn that one of the other tenants made a Mercedes in the lot ripe for the taking: tired of losing his keys, he just left them in his car. Anyone looking for a car would have taken his instead of the Jaguar -- one of the first clues the Judge was a target rather than a random victim.
3. The detectives trace the shooter through the stolen car. When they get to his house, they find him bleeding from ___________.

Answer: the two bullets the Judge fired off before going unconscious

The Judge was a quick shot and eventually the shooter died of those injuries. The detectives learned from his cousin, however, that he had been talking about money coming his way. This is another clue that the shooting of Judge Grobman was more than a carjacking.

Danny's cousin, Bobby Ward, is played by Dominic Chianese, Jr.; you may recommend that name if you're a fan of "The Sopranos." This actor is the son of the man who played Uncle Junior in the HBO series.
4. The stolen car was sold a few times before landing with a certain character named Robert Petkoff. The detectives came to see Petkoff at his place of work. What was his profession?

Answer: Doctor

Arrogant, scrubs-wearing Dr. Petkoff is brought down to the station to be interrogated about his ill-gotten luxury automobile.

During the interrogation, Dr. P. makes a particularly snooty remark about Ford Escorts.
5. The stolen car led to the shooter but not immediately who hired him. Furthering the investigation, the detectives learn that Judge Grobman had tangled in court with a Saudi oil baron.

Answer: False

The detectives learn that Grobman tangled with their condo's management company and contractor in civil court, but it was a dead end in terms of her shooting. This gives them another reason to keep looking at the husband, and this is how they learn that Walter Grobman knew the shooter, Danny Ward.
6. The detectives were watching the husband carefully from the beginning, never dropping him as a suspect even as they chased down other leads. About the possibility of her husband being involved, Judge Grobman does what?

Answer: said that was impossible and provided Walter with an alibi

This -- Judge Grobman's refusal to believe her husband could have been behind the murder attempt and providing him an alibi is the crux of the episode: no matter how much evidence piles up, Denise refuses to admit her husband could have put a hit out on her life.
7. Why did Walter Grobman want to kill his wife?

Answer: He resented her success

Walter Grobman, though appearing for decades as the supportive husband, resented how the couple's lives were driven by Denise's career rather than his work in architecture. When their plans to retire into a home custom-built by Walter changed because Denise was offered a federal judgeship in D.C., he was even more upset.

The police make a point to find out about the life insurance: all of Denise's estate and life insurance were in trust to their daughter and grandchildren, so there was no direct financial motive for Walter to have her killed.
8. Judge Lisa Pongracic, a friend and colleague of Denise Grobman, has to make the call as to whether Judge Grobman is mentally fit enough to provide testimony in her husband's trial. In her finding, she says she is __________ by that responsibility.

Answer: devastated

Judge Pongracic finds that Denise Grobman is too depressed to provide testimony in her husband's trial. In this riveting scene, we learn that Denise feels that it's her fault her husband wanted to have her killed, that she had been selfish about her own career.
9. When in court, ADA Jack McCoy asks Judge Grobman with whom she is staying while recovering from her injuries. Who is she staying with?

Answer: Their daughter, Dana

This was a telling piece of testimony, showing that Denise knew on some level that their marriage was irretrievably broken (which is what happens when one puts a hit out on another...).
10. At the end of the episode, what happens to Walter Grobman?

Answer: Pleads guilty to attempted murder one and 25 years to life

Admitting that he killed his wife and asking to end the negotiations and just go to jail is possibly the one good thing Walter Grobman did for his wife in this episode. He owned up to his crime so that he didn't have to put his wife through testifying.

This also allowed Denise to continue her fight not to be kept alive by machines anymore. That 30-year marriage ended in a bang, all right.
