Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Detectives Briscoe and Green arrive at a construction site where the body of a young boy was found. Which of the following objects did the police find inside the boy's mouth?

Answer: A battery

The episode opens with a boy asking two other children for money in exchange of taking them to see a body at a construction site. One of the boys only has $2, but the other child is charging $5 to take them there, so he refuses to do so. One of the boys threatens to call the police, which he apparently fulfills since NYPD officers are then seen taking Detectives Briscoe and Green to the crime scene.

They are told the dead child is probably seven or eight years old, and that he was found with his pants down and inside a pipe. Upon closer examination, the detectives find blood on the child's scalp and an object inside his mouth, which turns out to be a AAA battery.
2. Briscoe and Green head to the medical examiner's office to gain more insight into what could've caused the boy's death. Dr. Rodgers mentions that she found sodium chloride on the boy's hands, which means she found which of the following substances?

Answer: Salt

M.E. Elizabeth Rodgers concludes that the cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage, meaning that the brain bled internally after the boy's skull was fractured with a blunt object. Green mentions that there were many rocks around the body which could've been used for the murder. Dr. Rodgers also says that the boy had been dead just for a few short hours before the body was found, and that even though the rest of the body wasn't damaged, she did find traces of sodium chloride in the boy's hands. Rodgers says it was large-grain salt that could've come from a snack the boy ate.

She found no fingerprints on the battery, but did find that the battery was inserted into the child's mouth after he was killed.
3. After interviewing the children from the beginning of the episode and a girl who saw the body, the detectives go to a gas station since the girl said the suspect smelled like gas. The gas station manager denies that the suspect could work for him, because he has Pakistanis and Nigerians working for him, but the sketch of the perpetrator looked like which of the following actors?

Answer: Bruce Willis

The NYPD Communications team traces the 911 call back to the child who first called, who sends the detectives with Jonas, the boy who was selling $5 access to see the dead body. When the detectives interview him, they find that Jonas hadn't even seen the body, but had only heard about it from other children in the park. One of the girls he spoke with, Tara, tells the detectives that she saw a man putting the boy's body inside the pipe.

She describes the suspect as a white man with short hair and sideburns and a blue uniform.

She also says that the man smelled like gas and had a blue uniform, so the detectives go to a gas station. The manager recognizes the boy, saying he comes with his mother to buy lottery tickets. He also suggests that the man in the sketch couldn't work for him because he looks like actor Bruce Willis, rather than one of his employees who come from many different countries.
4. Briscoe and Green find a suspect who matches the description they got from Tara. The man insists he's not guilty and says a girl may have seen him outside of his girlfriend's apartment building. To confirm he's telling the truth, he mentions that the girl he saw was wearing a shirt of which New York basketball team?

Answer: Knicks

Charlene Polansky, the mother of the murdered child Aaron, is devastated to hear that her son is dead. She tells the detectives that her sister Ruth was supposed to pick him up. Ruth says no one was home so she assumed he went to work with his mother. The detectives learn that a man with a blue jumpsuit was seen leaving the building, and they find him working at an auto repair shop. The suspect denies being involved in kidnapping a child, but he says he can prove he left the building because a brown-haired girl wearing a Knicks shirt saw him leave. Briscoe and Green realize that Tara. the girl they had spoken to before, matches this description, leading them to think she could be lying.

The New York Knicks are the city's basketball team; the Clippers and the Lakers are both from Los Angeles, California. The Jets are one of New York's football teams.
5. The detectives interview Tara again since they think she knows something about the crime. She tells them her friend Jenny also saw the man in the blue jumpsuit, but Det. Green still thinks both girls are lying. When they go back to the apartment building, a child tells the detectives that he didn't see the man but he did see Jenny, who told him she would buy him which of these foods?

Answer: Hot dog

Tara sticks by her story and says her friend Jenny could confirm it. Jenny shows little interest in speaking with the detectives but corroborates that she saw a man in a blue jumpsuit at the crime scene. While Briscoe thinks Mr. Varnette should be charged, Green isn't convinced that the girls are telling the truth.

They go back to the apartment building and interview one of the kids, who says he didn't see a man outside but he did see Jenny, who offered to buy him a hot dog. He said he didn't agree to go out with her because "she hits".

A hot dog salesman confirms he saw Aaron with Jenny and Tara, and that they bought a pretzel from him. This would explain why the M.E. found salt in Aaron's hands, and make the girls prime suspects.
6. Detective Green interviews Tara again now that he has built rapport with her. This time, she confesses that Jenny hit Aaron with a rock multiple times. Green obtained the confession by telling Tara he was his friend and that she could be the next Mia Hamm, pointing to the fact that she plays which of these sports?

Answer: Soccer

Jenny's mother tells the police that her husband Vince is in jail for stealing cars, and realizes she might need a lawyer because her daughter could've committed a crime. She seems strangely disinterested in the conversation and doesn't seem too concerned for her age, despite the allegations against her. Tara, who is older, appears to be much more emotional with the situation. Green tells Tara he believes she's lying. Tara says she plays soccer, to which Green replies "wow, maybe I'm talking to the next Mia Hamm", referring to the legendary U.S. soccer player. The girl finally trusts Green enough to tell him the truth, which is that Jenny hit Aaron with a rock several times until he was dead. Tara also confesses that she was the one who pulled down Aaron's pants because Jenny instructed her to do so.

Both girls then appear at a juvenile court, with A.D.A. Carmichael asking the judge to hold them in custody since the prosecution plans to charge Jenny as an adult for murder. The judge releases the children to her parents with the condition that they wear an ankle bracelet. Tara's lawyer argues that the officer who interviewed her pressured the girl to confess. Mr. McCoy also seems unhappy with the way the interview was conducted, especially when Green called Tara "the next Mia Hamm".
7. A judge suppresses Tara's confession because of how Det. Green obtained it, which forces the prosecution to look for more evidence. They interview Jenny's father in prison and get pivotal evidence for their case. What specifically is this evidence?

Answer: A drawing of Jenny at the crime scene

District Attorney Adam Schiff is not happy with how Lt. Van Buren allowed Det. Green to proceed with an interview that could clearly be interpreted as coercing the witness into a confession. Carmichael talks to a young woman who babysits Jenny and finds troubling information: Jenny has no problem getting along with girls but strongly dislikes men, even getting into fights with boys at school. The babysitter also says that Jenny must know more about sex than even she does, since her mother often leaves her bedroom door open when she is with her boyfriends.

Mr. Brandt, Jenny's father, doesn't believe his daughter is capable of a murder. However, when Mr. McCoy mentions that the boy had a battery stuffed in his mouth, Mr. Brandt remembers that Jenny sent him a drawing of her that looks strikingly similar to the events that happened at the construction site: a girl who looks like Jenny holding a rock while a boy lies on the floor.
8. Jenny's lawyer claims that her client wasn't aware of the consequences of her actions because she's only ten years old. Mr. McCoy doesn't believe this is the case and orders a psychological evaluation. Which of these characters, played by J.K. Simmons, is assigned to speak to Jenny?

Answer: Dr. Emil Skoda

J.K. Simmons played the role of Dr. Emil Skoda in "Law & Order" since season 8, making recurring appearances to testify for the prosecution about the mental state of criminals and witnesses or creating psychological profiles of suspects. Skoda appeared in several episodes of the original series including its finale, and has also made special guest appearances in other shows from the franchise like "SVU" and "Criminal Intent".

Dr. Skoda asks Jenny how she felt when her father left, and she responds that she didn't care. She then talks about her mom's boyfriend Byron, who she wanted to hurt but couldn't because he was too big. That is why she fantasized about hurting little boys and even killing them. Skoda then lashes out at Jenny to observe her reaction, but she does not seem to be bothered. Jenny also admits to have poisoned a cat in her building, but then also says that the reason she put the battery in Aaron's mouth was to revive him with electricity like they do in hospitals. Dr. Skoda concludes that Jenny had been abused and her antisocial behavior would only continue, meaning that she is "a textbook serial killer they caught early".
9. Mr. McCoy believes that placing Jenny in a mental facility is the best course of action for her and society. However, he is surprised to find that the defense has a psychiatrist of their own, Dr. Olivet, willing to testify that Jenny doesn't need a mental institution. What is special about Dr. Olivet?

Answer: Dr. Olivet used to work for the District Attorney's office

Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, a clinical psychologist, appeared on almost every season of the original "Law & Order", as well as guest-starring in other shows of the franchise. Played by Carolyn McCormick, the character temporarily leaves in season 9 to open her private practice specializing in children, according to Dr. Skoda.

In this episode, the defense attorney explains to the judge that Olivet disagrees with Skoda's diagnosis, and moves to dismiss McCoy's position entirely. The judge asks both psychologists to testify in order to get the full picture and be able to reach a well-informed decision about the child.
10. The psychiatrists for both the prosecution and the defense give their insights about Jenny's behavior and the likelihood of it changing in the future. While Jenny's lawyer claims that "people change", Mr. McCoy argues that if there are no consequences for Jenny's actions, she could kill again. What is the judge's verdict at the end of the episode?

Answer: Jenny is not responsible and should be released to her mother

At family court, Dr. Skoda testifies that Jenny is a sociopath who is desensitized to violence and lacks empathy. Skoda assures Mr. McCoy that this behavior will only get worse and that he believes Jenny perfectly understood the consequences of her actions. Dr. Olivet, however, believes Jenny's behavior has a biological root: brain damage from an accident when she was four. Olivet believes that the girl can get better if treated appropriately and outside of a psychiatric institution. McCoy confronts Olivet after her testimony, saying he thought she was a victim's advocate.

Jenny's lawyer paints her as an innocent girl whose brain malfunctioned and hence was not aware of the consequences of her actions. Mr. McCoy argues that while he pities Jenny's upbringing, he believes Jenny fully understood what she was doing and, in fact, enjoyed it. He explains that while the defense equates committing Jenny to a mental hospital as a "death sentence", the victim Aaron Polansky was the one to actually get such a sentence.

The judge decides that Jenny didn't understand the consequences of her actions based on her age and psychiatric evaluations. Therefore, she releases her to her mother's custody, on the condition that they have monthly meetings with her. She acknowledges that while Mr. McCoy's concerns have merit, locking up Jenny would end any hope of rehabilitating her. As McCoy and Carmichael leave court, they walk by Jenny and notice her looking at a young boy.
