We learned in the opening scene that Drew Simpson had died by letter from Missie Tyler to Belinda but there was no mention of how. Later on Belinda explained he died of typhoid fever and the nurse said it was God's will. Belinda turned away from God with the death of her husband.

Belinda and her best friend, Dr. Annie Nelson, went to the hotel in Sikeston to see Mayor Evans. His office was in the hotel. They exchanged pleasantries and Belinda asked him if he was sure she was a woman doctor. "Yes but I was not expecting two." "This is my friend, Dr. Annie Nelson. She's going to be doctor in the Kansas Territory but the position doesn't open for a month."

Answer: Orphanage

At least three people in town came down with the mysterious illness but the bulk of the illness came from the orphanage. Just about everyone in town was afraid of the orphans.

Since Lillian wasn't sick, she helped Miss Clarence to give water and prepare meals for the orphans.

Due to the symptoms, Belinda concluded that the illness was cholera and it wasn't getting better.

At an outdoor meeting the town folk were angry and scared of the illness. Mayor Evans told them to give Doc Simpson more time to discover the illness. That prompted Mrs. Pine, whose husband was being treated by Belinda, to say it was cholera. Ray Russell, more angry than anyone mostly because he lost his brother, made an angry walk towards Belinda with Lee Owens getting in his way. Side note: Ray Russell was played by Lou Diamond Philips, who directed this episode.

Belinda scoured her medical books and came up with a way to give the patients more water. The devices were made up of soda bottles, rubber tubing and stoppers to allow water to flow out gently.

Answer: Lillian

Belinda watched Lillian give her best friend sips of water then moved onto another orphan using the same cup. Belinda told Lillian she was spreading it unknowingly to the sick children. Miss Clarence thought since the children were sick it wouldn't matter but Belinda called it unacceptable.

She ordered all children to have their own set of dishes and all dishes were to be washed in the hottest water that they could stand.

Gus, the general store owner, was closing up at night when he spotted the fire. He rang the bell and helped Lee and Belinda with assistance in putting out the fire. Ray Russell was proud of the fire, claiming he did it but no one was proud of him. Mayor Evans ordered Sheriff Eustace to arrest him which he did.

After Belinda adopted Lillian, Belinda and Lee were married by Mayor Evans. Belinda read a letter from Missy welcoming Lee as their new son and Lillian as their granddaughter.
