Mary Watson, Annie's mother-in-law, was an old fashioned midwife who openly contradicted all of Belinda's medical knowledge. Belinda prescribed bed rest and a darkened room and as soon as Belinda went to work Mary had her out of bed walking, much against Belinda's orders.

Mabel came to Belinda's clinic asking for help but Belinda warned her the only remedies were vegetables or the tonic. Mr. McQueen had broken the only bottle she had at the time. At the general store Mabel came to the store for Lloyd coming from the meat market. Just outside the store she passed out cold and Annie diagnosed her as a severe case of anemia.
