Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The only character to appear in all 251 episodes of the series was Benjamin Franklin Pierce. Who played this iconic character?

Answer: Alan Alda

Alan Alda played Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce, a surgeon who enjoyed pulling an occasional prank on his fellow surgeons. He was also big on drinking and womanizing. He balanced the chaos of the war with jokes. Hawkeye was played by Donald Sutherland in the 1970 movie.

Alan Alda is also known for his roles in "What Women Want", "The Aviator", and "Tower Heist". He has also made guest appearances on television show such as "The Big C" and "The Blacklist".
2. Wayne Rogers played one of Hawkeye's fellow surgeons and best friend in the first three seasons of the show. What was his character's name?

Answer: "Trapper" John McIntyre

Wayne Rogers played "Trapper" John. Trapper and Hawkeye met during a college football game. They were then drafted into the Army and ended up being shipped to the same M*A*S*H unit. Trapper, like Hawkeye, loved a practical joke every now and again. Elliot Gould played "Trapper" John in the movie from 1970.

Rogers also played in "Cool Hand Luke", "Stagecoach West", and several tv series including "House Calls", "Murder She Wrote", and "City of Angels."
3. At the start of season 4, "Trapper" John left the show and a new character was brought in. This character was played by Mike Farrell. Who was it?

Answer: B.J. Hunnicut

"Trapper" John was replaced by B.J. Hunnicut. B.J. hailed from California and had a wife Peg and a daughter Erin. Much like Trapper, B.J. considered himself a sort of prankster. In fact, in an episode titled "The Joker is Wild", B.J. bet Hawkeye that he could prank everyone at their table in a 24 hour period.

Mike Farrell also had guest appearances in such shows as "Law&Order: Special Victims Unit", "Desperate Housewives", and a starring role in "Providence".
4. Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger was a corpsman often seen wearing dresses. Who played this very interesting individual?

Answer: Jamie Farr

Jamie Farr gave life to Klinger. Klinger dressed like a woman for most of the series. He believed that doing this, along with other schemes, would get him what was known as a Section 8. A Section 8 would get him out of the Army by declaring him insane. Other attempts by Klinger included trying to eat a jeep, trying to convince people that he was pregnant, and trying to overeat to gain too much weight to be in the Army.

Jamie Farr was also on "The Love Boat", and "After MASH". He also made game show appearances on shows like "Super Password".
5. Not every character on "M*A*S*H" got along. One of the surgeons, played by Larry Linville, seemed to rub everyone the wrong way. Which surgeon was it?

Answer: Frank Burns

Frank Burns, played by Larry Linville, was career Army. He liked everything by the book in true military fashion. He didn't like Hawkeye and Trapper's (later B.J.'s) laid back attitudes about the Army life. Frank was a married man, but he was hooking up with Margaret Houlihan on the side. When Margaret got married, Frank went a little nuts and was shipped back to the States and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Frank was played by Robert Duvall in the movie.

Larry Linville was also credited with works like "Earth Girls Are Easy" and "The Night Stalker".
6. Who played the new surgeon sent in to replace Frank Burns?

Answer: David Ogden Stiers

The new surgeon was Charles Emerson Winchester III, played by David Ogden Stiers. Charles first appeared in the episode "Fade In, Fade Out". Charles came from a wealthy family in Boston and never hesitated to make others feel inferior, but beneath his pompous exterior, Charles had a heart of gold.

After "M*A*S*H" ended, David Ogden Stiers went on to do countless television shows including "Murder, She Wrote", "Love&Money", and "Stephen King's Dead Zone". He was in several Perry Mason television movies and has lent his voice to many Disney movies like "Beauty and the Beast", "Lilo and Stitch", and "Pocahontas".
7. Gary Burghoff left the show in the 8th season. What lovable character did he play?

Answer: "Radar" O'Reilly

Gary Burghoff played Walter Eugene O'Reilly. He was given the name Radar in Korea. Radar seemed psychic at times in the show. Radar was a young naive man from a little town in Iowa. He loved all animals and had an assortment of pets during his time in Korea. He left in a two part episode called "Good-bye Radar". Gary Burghoff also played Radar in the 1970 movie.

Gary Burghoff also starred in a movie called "Small Kill" and was a guest on several games shows including "Super Password" and "Match Game".
8. Which character was portrayed by William Christopher?

Answer: Father Mulcahy

William Christopher played Father Mulcahy in every episode featuring that character except the pilot episode. Mulcahy was portrayed by George Morgan in the pilot episode and by Rene Auberjonois in the movie. Father Mulcahy was the spiritual guardian of sorts. He held onto his faith even in worst of times.

William Christopher has more recently been in the soap opera "Days of Our Lives". He has also starred in movies such as "The Fortune Cookie" and "With Six You Get Eggroll".
9. Who played Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, the head nurse at the 4077th?

Answer: Loretta Swit

Loretta Swit portrayed "Hot Lips" Houlihan. Hot Lips was played by Sally Kellerman in the movie. Hot Lips, like Frank Burns, was career Army. At first, anything that distracted from the discipline of Army was considered unacceptable in Margaret's book. As the series progressed, Margaret learned to loosen up and let her true kind hearted nature show through.

After "M*A*S*H", Swit moved on to act in several episodes of "The Love Boat" and "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever".
10. Finally, a unit is only as good as its commanding officer. The 4077th had two throughout the series. The first was Henry Blake, played by McLean Stevenson. Who played the second, Sherman T. Potter?

Answer: Harry Morgan

Sherman T. Potter was played by Harry Morgan. Potter was a career Army Colonel who served in both World War I and World War II. He quickly became part of a new family in the 4077th. He handled all of Klinger's ridiculous schemes and Hawkeye's jokes with grace. He deeply cared for all those in the 4077th as well as the patients.

Harry Morgan starred on TV shows like "The Love Boat", "Blacke's Magic", and "Dragnet 1967". He also appeared in movies like "The Apple Dumpling Gang", Dragnet", and "Family Plan".
