Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts
Answer: Steal the Franken Family's jewels
First Aired: November 22, 1969.
Big Bob Oakley used his disguise skills to impersonate various monsters in an effort to scare visitors away from Franken Castle. He was looking for the Franken Family's jewels, which are sewn into a tapestry. Even if treasure hunting was not a crime, the Sheriff mentioned that he was wanted for crimes committed in several other states. What may have been the most impressive was how quickly Oakley transitioned between several distinct roles.
Fun fact: Just as Big Bob Oakley impersonated Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, and the Wolfman, actor John Stephenson voiced all four characters. While Bob Oakley also portrayed the fortune teller, the character was voiced by legendary actress June Foray (except the brief moment when the fortune teller tried to make an escape).
2. Scooby-Doo, and a Mummy Too
Answer: To acquire a diamond scarab
First aired: November 29, 1969.
Dr. Najib disguised himself as the Mummy of Ankha to gain access to a gold coin that accidentally fell into Shaggy's possession. Supposedly the coin is the key to getting access to a priceless diamond scarab. In the storyline Ankha was a wealthy, powerful leader of Egypt from about 1000 BC. It seemed that the mummy had the power to turn someone into stone, or so the gang thought when they found a statue of Dr. Najib.
Fun fact: Velma briefly disguised herself as Cleopatra in this episode. Velma was voiced by Nicole Jaffe.
3. Which Witch is Which
Answer: Retrieving a stolen armored car
First aired: December 06, 1969.
Two locals, Zeke and Zeb, have disguised themselves as a zombie and a witch to scare others away from the swamp. Years ago the two men robbed an armored car which had been lost in the swamp and which they hoped to find. The villains had some cool tools such as a voodoo doll of Zeb and a rubber balloon they used to make a mock up of a flying witch. A significant part of the action took place on an abandoned riverboat.
Fun fact: Interestingly, the gang had been on a fishing trip just before being involved with this case. Zeb and Zeke were using a metal tipped rod to "fish" for the car.
4. Go Away Ghost Ship
Answer: Insurance fraud
First aired: December 13, 1969.
Mr. Magnus, who was losing money in his shipping business, decided to disguise himself as Redbeard the Pirate so he could capture his own ships. The cargo of the ships could then sold while he also collected the insurance money. At one point, Shaggy made a paper pirate hat and used his voice acting skills to convince some of the pirate crew that they are seeing the shadow of Redbeard the Pirate. The paper later proved to be an important clue.
Fun fact: Mr. Magnus's butler tries to prevent Mystery, Inc. from seeing Mr. Magnus and then eavesdropping when they discuss the case with him. It seemed the butler was being set up either as the villain or an undercover police officer. He was actually a red herring as he did not appear again in the episode.
5. Spooky Space Kook
Answer: Buy up land for airport expansion
First aired: December 20, 1969.
Henry Bascombe, a local resident, heard that the Air Force had planned to reopen an abandoned air field and expand it. He disguised himself as the Spooky Space Kook, a helmeted figure with a skull like face and a cackling laugh. He hoped to scare other landowners away so he could buy their land and resell it for a profit. Some people describe the Spooky Space Kook as one of the scariest villains of the series.
Fun fact: In this episode, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are actually scared by Shaggy and Scooby rather than the other way around.
6. A Night of Fright is No Delight
Answer: Stealing an inheritance
First aired: January 10, 1970.
Lawyers Creeps and Crawls tried to scheme their way to Colonel Beauregard Sanders's wealth. According to the Colonel's will, his heirs (several relatives plus Scooby-Doo) must spend a night in his mansion in order to receive a share of the wealth. Creeps and Crawls, disguised as ghosts, were able to force everyone out of the house except for Mystery, Inc. The episode featured an organ that opened a secret door when the right combination of notes was played.
Fun fact: Since the Colonel was an enthusiastic collector of Civil War artifacts, it is appropriate that the million dollars is in Confederate currency. While Velma's reaction was to assume it is worthless, it was possible that some if it might have had numismatic value (even if it could not be spent).
7. That's Snow Ghost
Answer: Passing along smuggled goods
First aired: January 17, 1970
Mr. Greenway, the manager of a ski lodge, regularly was asked by Mr. Leech to hold onto a briefcase. The two men were part of a smuggling ring and used the case to move stolen jewels. Mr. Greenway further used the Snow Ghost disguise to scare away snoopers. He based his disguise on the story of Fu Lan Chi, who once encountered a yeti that fell to its death. The episode had the interesting idea of the Snow Ghost using invisible skis to simulate flight.
Fun fact: Mr. Greenway and Mr. Leech are a homage to Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre, two very distinctive actors who appeared together in several movies, including "The Maltese Falcon".
8. Nowhere to Hyde
Answer: Jewel robberies
First aired: September 12, 1970.
Dr. Jekyll, a descendant of the original Dr. Jekyll, used the disguise of the Ghost of Mr. Hyde to commit robberies, focusing on jewels. He attempted to confuse Mystery, Inc. by telling them about his fear over turning into Hyde. He also attempted to frame his housekeeper by allowing them to discover she was formerly a circus star. Ultimately the discovery of suction cups exonerated Helga since as a circus star she would not need them.
Fun fact: This is the first episode to use a song, in this case "Recipe for My Love", for a chase sequence.
9. Mystery Mask Mix-Up
Answer: Information about a smuggling ring
First aired: September 19, 1970.
Merchant Mr. Fong was actually the head of a smuggling ring. Each month his gang would receive details about the next delivery in a decorative mask. He used the disguise of Zen Tuo to scare away people from his operations. His henchmen disguised themselves also. The episode seemed to take place in and around San Francisco's Chinatown, with a location that appears to be Fisherman's Wharf in one scene.
Fun Fact: Daphne Blake was seemingly wealthy enough to make an impulse purchase and buy a mask that at least looks costly. Daphne was voiced by Stefanianna Christpherson in the first season and Heather North in the second season.
10. Scooby's Night with a Frozen Fright
Answer: Stealing a marine life communicator
First aired: September 26, 1970.
Professor Wayne at the Oceanland Aquarium wanted to steal the marine life communicator developed by his colleague, Professor Ingstrom. He could then sell it and become wealthy. To cover Ingstrom's disappearance/death, Wayne took advantage of the corpse of a caveman frozen in a block of ice and seemingly found in the water. Pretending that the ice melted, Wayne used a rubber caveman suit to attempt his plan. Ultimately the plan was foiled and the suit was last seen as Scooby-Doo's dance partner at the malt shop.
Fun fact: This is the first episode where a villain refers to Mystery, Inc as "meddling kids".
